It turns out they're really not so bad at it, on their own.
Lan Zhan has brought flowers. He’s nearly-certain that flowers are a reasonable starting place - only 'nearly' because his brother had just about teared up when Lan Zhan had asked him for date-gift advice, and they’d both been too awkward to continue the conversation. Lan Zhan hopes that Wei Ying likes flowers.

Wei Ying glances around at the empty street around them and then leans up on his toes to kiss Lan Zhan. He tastes like fresh rainwater, like sunlight, like poetry, and then he pulls away from Lan Zhan’s mouth and leaves him lingering there, alone in the liminal space between kissing and having been kissed.

Summary
Wei Ying is allergic to little kids, mostly because they're very sticky and like to cough on each other.
He’s sick. He can deny it to Jiang Cheng (allergies, yes, to children with colds and sticky hands), but not to himself. His head aches and it hurts his chest when he breathes too deeply. It’s not that Wei Ying thinks he can’t go on a date with Lan Zhan in this condition. It’s that Lan Zhan would clock him at a hundred paces and give him wounded baby deer eyes, somehow without moving his face at all.
Lan Zhan’s facial expressions are seriously something worth studying. How he can look desperately sad and pleading without even moving his eyebrows is anyone’s guess.

Summary
You can't just take someone else's kid.
Together they get the toddler settled on Lan Zhan’s couch, which would be a terrifying proposition if the child were more energetic or less apparently well-behaved. Children and white furniture, in Lan Zhan’s limited experience, tend to be somewhat disastrous bedfellows.
