Summary
Snow began its idle descent from above the line of barren trees, filtering to the frozen forest floor in fat flakes. Despite the turn of weather, Rey remained focused on the pair of long ears ducking behind the nearby brush. Her fingers trembled as she nocked an arrow in the string of her bow but she ignored the cold as she prepared to take her shot.
If she was like any other omega, she would be sequestered in the warmth of her den right now, heavy with pups and waiting for her alpha to return from the hunt. But Rey hadn’t gone into heat with the shift from autumn to winter like she was supposed to. The alphas of her pack had turned their noses from her in disgust when her scent didn’t sharpen with mating pheromones. What’s wrong with her? They would ask themselves and Rey had no answer.

Summary
He didn’t smell like any one thing. His scent was the darkest chocolate, the fullest-bodied wine, the strongest coffee, the indefinably delicious bitter taste that lingered on the back of her tongue after drinking a rich, foamy porter. It was a scent that she would recognize no matter how much time had passed since she last saw him, forever imprinted into her mind.
Alpha.

Summary
Ben had always thought he was defective in some way. He didn’t react to Omegas with anything but passing interest. Now he knew that he just had never met her. Rey. His Omega.
His mouth watered at the thought, his jaw tightening as he imagined closing his teeth around her mating gland.
“Alpha…are you okay?”
No. He wasn’t.
Ben was very much in danger of bending his Omega over and pupping her, then and there, in the dirt like their ancestors would have. Which was a problem because though his every instinct roared to take what belonged to him, she didn’t. Not really.

Summary
“You should leave her,” Rey told him frankly. “Mom will do it again. She’s an addict.”
Ben stared at her in disbelief. She only shrugged.
“Surgery, sex, shopping, booze--she gets hooked on things easily.”
“You shouldn’t talk like that,” he muttered, loathing Bazine’s obvious influence.
Rey scoffed, “She’s not going to change. I’d know.”
She would know, Ben realized. There was a reason she had needed a social worker before he had entered Bazine’s life to offer stability. If he left her mother, she would be shuffled back into the system sooner rather than later. Ben was all that stood between her having a nice home to grow up in and something like normalcy, and being thrown into foster care and uncertainty. Ben and his ridiculously large trust fund.
“You’re right,” he said.
But he couldn’t do that to Rey.

Summary
She could hear the creature now, charging through overgrowth carelessly, and all her wisdom about fleeing in a blind panic was overrun by instinct.
Trying to contain the urge to weep in despair, she broke into a run. All she had wanted was to know why her parents had left, she never thought she might actually die for that knowledge.
A menacing growl broke behind her and Rey glanced back at the monstrous, black wolf that was stalking behind her.
She screamed, catching its golden eyes in the darkness for a flash before she pushed herself into a sprint. It didn’t chase her at a greater speed, though she sensed the beast could have easily overtaken her. It was savoring the hunt.

Summary
“It is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life.”
But she wasn’t a romantic, as her friend was; she never had been.
Kaydel had laughed in delight, only to whisper back, “Unfortunately, I know of one defect I cannot overlook. He’s…” She had lowered her voice further until Rey could scarcely make out the words, “Mr. Solo is an Alpha.”
One didn’t speak of such things in polite society, or indeed even in private, but there was no need for further explanation.

Summary
Earl was out smoking on the front porch when the door swung open, letting in a small flurry of snow with the newcomers, and when they kept the door held open for too long, Clyde whirled from his spot behind the bar to give them the what-for, his scolding died on his lips. All thought of his monthly heating cost flew from his mind, every sense in his body fixated completely on the small woman on his doorstep. She hadn’t turned inside yet, waiting for someone to join her, but he didn’t need to see her face.
It was like Pa always said, the nose knows, boy. And boy, did it know.

Summary
Ben trudged up the beaten path to Plutt Farm, his nostrils flaring with the sickly saccharine scent--the scent of sin--that filled the crisp, spring air, his black cassock snagging on overgrown brush. It was no surprise to him such a disorderly place was home to evil.
“Father,” Farmer Plutt greeted him with a grim frown at the gate, waiting for him.
“Take me to the witch.”

Summary
“Aren’t you going to Solo’s place for Thanksgiving?” Finn asked, snickering when he saw the ad Rose was inspecting with a scowl. “You should put it to the test, see if it really is ‘mate bait.’”
He dropped it back into the box and it fluttered onto the stacks of ads of clunky, pastel appliances and canned goods.
