Summary
Sammy sniffed audibly as he clambered up Dean’s spine and got his bony little ankles in their too-big second-hand sneakers around his older brother’s middle. He tucked his chin over Dean’s shoulder, right into that little Sam-space in the hollow of his right clavicle, and Dean decided to ignore the snot he could feel streaking the side of his neck in favor of nudging his cheek up against Sammy’s too-long girl hair. Dean would never admit it, but he loved his kid’s hair. Sammy’s hair smelled like lighter fluid and corn chip dust and greasy motel water and Dean loved it.

Summary
“Sammy, I…” Dean is at loss. Sammy leans forward with a rustle of sheets, and this time their noses really do brush. Dean flinches. His eyes almost cross to keep his kid in focus, and Sammy stares right back.
“Dean...” The word slides feather-soft from Sammy’s lips in a puff of air. Dean sucks it down into his own lungs. He could live on Sammy’s words.
The next ones sucker-punch him anyhow.
“Why’d you stop?”

Summary
John’s vision grays out as the steady pressure of Sammy’s hands seal the gash through his ribs, and the salt of his palms eats into the edges of the wound.
Through his pain he can hear Dean’s voice, high and scared: “Dad, you’re gonna be okay—you’ll be okay; it’s okay, I’ll fix it, I swear—me an’ Sammy—you’re gonna—”
John may be able to breathe, though every inhale feels like someone smashed a shot glass of whiskey and then shanked him with the sticky-sweet ethanol shiv, but he knows he hasn’t got much longer. Already, he can feel the warmth of his own vitality spreading underneath him in a copper-smelling stain.
