No rest for the wicked, they say. Rio gives that statement the biggest middle finger she can conjure out of green smoke. Sometimes, the wicked need rest. Sometimes Death needs a break.
Every so often Rio gets bored. Or exhausted, which is an interesting state for her to be in, since her body cannot physically register pain. When it all feels like too much, she hangs up the dramatic-ass wardrobe of Death, puts on some sweatpants, and goes to Delaware.
or: agatha keeps accidentally summoning rio to her crime scenes. rio should probably be more upset about this.

Agatha twirls her finger in her coffee cup, then puts it in her mouth and sucks off the extra drops. Just to be extra annoying. “I just need to lay low for a bit, all right? Just… hide out. Let the whole thing blow over, you know.” Her eyes darken. “And you know there’s nowhere better than here to hide away from humanity.”
Yeah, that’s true. And Rio – Rio is jealous and sentimental and generally a melty puddle whenever Agatha asks her to do anything. She already made her breakfast. That’s basically like a binding contract.
“You can stay here,” she says softly, and her whole body lights up like Agatha’s face when she grins.

“Anyway, I was going to go camping this weekend. Do you want to come with me? You know, since you’re here and all.”
So distracted is Agatha by the weird sad-happy feeling in her chest watching Rio kiss Scratchy between the ears that she mindlessly says “yeah, sure” without really processing what Rio’s suggested. It starts to dawn on her that she has done something incredibly damning when a smirk flits over Rio’s face and she burrows deeper into the couch, rubbing up against Agatha’s side. “Wait, what did I just agree to?”
“Spending a night out in the wilderness in a tiny little tent with me,” Rio says smoothly.
or: innocent agatha harkness gets roped into sharing not only a tent but her heart with her ex-wife (who she's definitely still in love with).

There’s something weirdly attractive about this non-conforming stranger – not attractive attractive, Rio’s never wanted another person in her life the way she’s wanted Agatha and she never will, she shudders at the thought – but nice to look at. Or- interesting, maybe? Rio can’t put her finger on it, but the cut of their jacket and the way their shorts fall too wide around their calves – she can’t stop looking.

Summary
Normally, Rio wouldn’t give a shit what humans do with their time. Agatha cares a little more, both because she’s mostly kind-of human and also because humans doing stupid things creates great opportunities for chaos. But the meteoric rise of human reliance on generative A.I. has a very particular effect on the Earth’s environment. Namely, a really bad one.
And the funny thing about Rio choosing to have a material form and stay on Earth most of the time is that it exposes them to certain risks. Such as upsets in the cosmic or environmental balance manifesting physically in their body as illnesses or injuries. Such as, well.
A.I. is poisoning the earth, and now it’s poisoning Rio Vidal too.
or: stupid human-influenced climate change has a detrimental effect on rio's cosmic body, and agatha is there to help. a quick, fluffy return to the delaware cabin.
