Summary
“It hurts, being here.” Shen Yuan admitted in a whisper, as if those four simple words were enough to encompass his entire life, enough to explain away the uncertainty of the future.
The cool tendril still tucked beath his shirt, pressed into the skin of his wounded shoulder with a pressure that made him gasp at the slight sudden pain.
The other boy hummed, agreeably. “Yes.”
The word was a concession and a challenge all in one. Shen Yuan was unable to think a single thought in response to it, his body tense under the pressure of the cool salve. After a prolonged moment, the insistent press lifted, returning back to a chilly balm, gentle and reliant.
He used all his strength to pull his lips into a small smile, the shape of it tentative but kind.“We’re together now.” He whispered, pillowing his hand under his cheek and settling in to sleep, completely unaware of the way this propped angle made his earnest eyes glint in the dark. Completely ignorant to the power of his tenderly curved mouth. "That's what matters."

Summary
Shen Yuan's ‘Lonely’ feeling was a rare one that stemmed from both of these things. His fear of the dark, his fear of solitude. And conversely, his desire for companionship. His desire for comfort.
Fear and desire were the only two strings a demon needed to pull to play a human like a puppet, and the ability to play with these two emotions like facing two mirrors towards each other was a demon's greatest skill.
And children of course, were so simple. Wearing their emotions on their sleeve. Telling anyone who would listen about what would make them happy, what makes them sad-“I don’t want to be alone.”
What a simple desire to satisfy.
