    Summary

She had invaded his life, his thoughts.
Alex had been torn from him, progeny of one of his ribs, half of his flesh.
Alex had been taken from him, and a part of him can understand why, the boy in the video clutching his sister as if he couldn't let her go.
They're the same age, but the boy is still a little big and can easily lift the girl, carrying her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
There's something soft about that scene, and he understands why Spencer separated them: the rational part of his mind grasps the meaning, but the outrage overwhelms reason, turning into rage and brutality.
The little girl — Alex — laughs, letting herself dangle downward and be carried, an ink stain on her cheek and a scraped elbow.
The boy places her on the colorful rug, and Alex sits down, reaching out to him as he had done only a few nights before — Lift me up, Al.
He pauses the recording, watching the boy give her a look she's seen on his own face — affection, and something more intense, adult.
Wesker looks at himself and recognizes that feeling for what it is: devotion.

Twenty-two years old, a frown on his forehead, his hands in his lab coat pockets.

Albert Wesker; Level Four Chief Researcher.

Twenty-five years old, dark glasses masking his face — his heart.
    Twenty-nine years old — them.
Annette Birkin, her husband: a wistful smile, William's arm around her shoulders.
Her mother, a red shirt and her hair tied in a messy knot at the nape of her neck — her father: arctic, wolfish eyes, his fingers brushing Alex's.

    September, 1989.

Eve stifles a retch as her left distal phalanx grows back, and she bends forward.

The photo crumples in her lap, falls.

Her mother's hidden joy makes her want to cry for all the missed opportunities.
