Summary
Fanfiction is by no means a new phenomenon. People have been reclaiming and reimagining existing works for their own personal and community needs since Milton's Paradise Lost to the zines of Trekkie housewives to E. L. James' Fifty Shades of Gray. However, fanfiction, particularly online fanfiction as it most commonly exists today, does constitute a nearly uncharted realm for Folklore, as both a discipline and a medium. This project explores the ways in which fanfiction operates as a new folkloric genre, one that engages in self-critique and analysis as a kind of modern meta folktale. Furthermore, this project delves into the highly impactful role that fanfiction plays in queer and female communities as a tool for reconstructing and reclaiming erotic folklore.
