It was all Lan Xichen’s fault really, because he’d been the one to think to add A-Yuan to the family registry first.
Of course, when he’d made that decision, it hadn’t been (as some people thought) to lay claim over the boy, or (as Jiang Cheng thought) to slight Jiang Cheng. No, he’d simply made the decision because he thought it might make his brother happy.
( I’ve seen fics where Jiang Cheng beat Lan Zhan to A-Yuan, and I’ve seen fics where Wangji takes A-Yuan to a Sect other than GusuLan, but what I really wanted was to force Yunmeng Jiang and Gusu Lan to share custody of a child for comedic purposes.
Or, Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan grudgingly agreed to share, but no one thought to tell Lan Xichen who thought he’d lucked into getting a nephew all to himself. )

Having ghosted Lan Wangji after their accidental night together, Wei Wuxian was confident he could raise the child alone. That confidence vanishes the moment the baby is born. The entire room nearly chokes as Wen Qing holds up a newborn who is a perfect, tiny carbon copy of Hanguang-jun.
The infant doesn't even cry; he just settles into the same stoic scowl and indignant "Hmph" Lan Wangji makes when he’s annoyed. When the baby finally opens his eyes, Wei Wuxian realizes the truth is impossible to hide. No amount of lying can cover up a face that looks exactly like the man he’s been trying to avoid.
