    Summary

Aventurine doesn’t try to hide the breathy laugh. For a moment, he forgets the new scent in his nostrils and the way his body seems warmer than usual, pulled in by a gravitational force he had only ever thought of but never physically felt.

“You’re in luck, doctor. I’m free for the rest of the evening,” says Aventurine as he stands back and straightens up. “Of course, you’ll owe me one, as the saying goes.”

“I would not expect any less of you, gambler.”

In Penacony, not only are you able to change your appearance, but you can also change your secondary gender. Or, Aventurine experiences what it is like to be an Omega and at the merciful hands of an Alpha.

Sunday turns around, movement of his silhouette barely visible as Veritas’s eyes adjust to the complete darkness. The speakers crackle with static and flare out as his feet click still into the center of the room. Pain reverberates through Veritas’s head, but he doesn’t dare wince.

    “You’ve returned."

Ratio and Sunday watch the finale of Aventurine's performance. Things get a little more interesting after the curtain call.

    Summary

“Math?” And a published academic journal, at that?

“Yes.” Ratio returns the book to his bag, carrying on, but Aventurine’s stuck on the fact that this is apparently what he does in his free time outside of composing music.

“…I thought you were a pianist.”

    “I am a pianist.”

“But– math?” Even Aventurine doesn’t spend that much time thinking about math, and he spends twelve hours a day staring at financial models.

“Does it not occur to you that it's possible to have more than one interest?”

Aventurine lives the same week on repeat: eighty hours of his soul-sucking high finance job, then two nights of dancing off the stress to the beat of his favorite anonymous DJ. His move into a luxury apartment building brings him next door to Ratio, an esteemed classical composer with a love for piano. Eager to make a good impression, Aventurine keeps his clubbing habit under wraps — but he’s not the only one hiding secrets under strobe lights.

    Summary

Ratio didn’t respond, instead brushing the hair from Aventurine’s eyes so tenderly that it hurt. Aventurine should have known Ratio wouldn’t be so easily distracted. Ratio cupped Aventurine’s face, looking him in the eye like a lover. Like an equal.

Aventurine had to blink back tears.

“Aventurine,” Ratio said, soft, sincere. But then, Ratio was always sincere with him when it counted, “Dearest.”

That nickname. It was stupid to get so emotional over it. And yet.

Aventurine took a shuddering breath, “Yes?”

His heart was pounding almost painfully. He cared about Ratio way too much.

Ratio held him like he was everything and said, “You need more friends.”

In which, at Ratio's insistence, Aventurine tries to make some friends.
