“I’m asking a favour,” Shadowheart said, allowing the raw to slip into her voice, the hurt, “I’m feeling too much. I need to - I guess - let some of the poison out. Can you help?”
Lae’zel tapped at her leather pants with the crop. There was a spot of blood still on her upper lip - she’d missed it on her initial wash, and Shadowheart had interrupted her bathing with this insanity. Shadowheart thought about a knife pressed to Lae’zel’s delicate jugular, about the way they’d spat and hissed and snarled at each other for the month before heading to the Shadow Cursed lands, and marvelled about how they’d gotten here.
“You wish for me to hurt you,” Lae’zel said. It wasn’t a question.
Shadowheart answered it anyways.
“Yes.”

“I…have known nothing in my life but battle.” The words are stilted, brusque; it is her way. “All my knowledge of…children…is of constant testing, unending bloodshed. I do not know what a healthy creche looks like. I do not know what a healthy githyanki childhood looks like. That knowledge has been stolen from us. I do not—” She grits her teeth. “I dislike embarking on such an important mission with no information. Too much is at stake.”
Tearing such vulnerability from between her ribs has never come naturally. But watching the still-wet hatchling examine its own toes, watching her lover brush eggshell from its arms, against her will Lae’zel softens. They have been through too much together not to respond such. Back-to-back, as ever, there is surely no challenge so great that they cannot—
“Well, don’t look at me,” says Shadowheart. “I was raised in a cult, remember?”
