Summary
A magnetic event of some kind has temporarily knocked out most electronics onboard and forced Rocky into a coma. Grace now has to navigate first contact with Erid alone, with no software to translate his words to the Eridians at the space elevator until Mary can run diagnostics on everything. But he’s not panicking! He can still speak (simplified, childish) Standard Equatorial Ran, so this should still be salvageable. Sure, he doesn't sound that great, but they can understand him. Right?
The alien child believes the engineer is its mate, and the ships logs have records of the crimes committed. The situation is dire. Immediate intervention is needed.

Summary
Rocky is approximately half of Grace’s impulse control at this point, on top of being the only thing that’s kept him alive. When Grace needed to start thinking about more food, it was Rocky who suggested he breed taumoeba. When Grace needed vital nutrients, it was Rocky who suggested they look into the coma slurry.
When Grace needed something to hold, to remind him he was not alone, he was not dead, and he was not dreaming — it was Rocky who gave him something to cling to.
or: grace and rocky get to erid, but things are more complicated than expected.

Summary
Olesya wonders if Dr. Xi has picked up on this ‘thing’ that everyone seems to be thinking about, but no one is saying. The way Grace seems to go limp, pliant, easy when touched. It’s the alcohol, but it’s something else too. Something unquantifiable.
Grace doesn’t appear to know that he’s the new variable in their equation, the puzzle that everyone is trying to solve.

The intruder enters the kitchen slowly, limbs held low to the ground. Their carapace tilts from side to side as they draw near, fixing their auricles on me.
The xenosuit they have on looks cobbled together, almost experimental. It’s not see-through like my team’s suits are. It wasn’t designed with my light detectors in mind. Instead, it’s dark and opaque, and not at all helping to dispel the impression of a masked burglar in my home.
I’ve never seen that body language in person before, but I understand it on an instinctual level. Eridians are the apex predators of their planet. It’s a hunting stance, and I am the prey.
