Summary
Clark Kent wasn’t special. There was nothing extraordinary about him at all. He was a simple farmboy from a small town. Lex had ensured that, ruling out every single other possibility before coming to the only reasonable conclusion: Clark Kent and Superman were sleeping together.
They must be. Kent is the only journalist Superman will do interviews with, and one doesn’t get that kind of exclusivity unless something else is on the bargaining table. Well. Lex can bargain too.

"Are you saying it would be better if I were dead?"
Lex sighs. "I didn't say that."
In front of him, Clark shakes his head, shrugging. "That's exactly what you're saying." He sounds tired.
"No, because I'm not including you in this, Clark." He emphasizes his name, turning away from the table to stand in front of him again. "Did I want my plan to work? Of course. Did I want to kill you? Absolutely. Would I kill you now if I had the chance? No. In case you haven't noticed, you're literally the exception to everything I said I would never do."
Clark blinks. He looks confused. The audacity. "I'm the exception?"
"What, do you think I let any alien get into my bed? I have a reputation for hating them."
Or: For some reason, Superman has been visiting Lex ever since Lex helped him defeat Brainiac. For some reason, Lex hasn't done anything about it.

After being released from prison, Lex makes a deal with a Kryptonian devil: he’ll bail out the Daily Planet to keep it from going bankrupt and, in exchange, Superman will pretend to date him to help restore Lex’s public image. It’s only a mutually beneficial arrangement, of course - it’s not like Superman and Lex Luthor could ever be attracted to each other. Right?
