He had no protector now. Except himself. He could protect himself and protect his brothers. He would have to, because no one else would.
People had failed him enough. Doctors, police, it didn't matter, because they didn't do the one thing they vowed to do-- protect the innocent. So, Court would take on the role. He didn't mind.
He didn't.
But just because he told himself he didn't mind, that didn't mean he didn't lie down at night, stare at the ceiling, and imagine that his own arms wrapped around himself, were instead his mother's arms, her gentle hands soothing him softly until he could drift off every night. Hell, he was still doing that even though everyone was safe at Uncle Holland's house now. He could shake off the role of protector, let someone else carry the burden-- but it just wasn't that easy. He couldn't shake it off.
It was instinct now.

Ryland Grace couldn't feel anything.
Just like after it happened. It was this bone deep ache that you can't exactly put a name to, but it's closest equivalent would be total and utter numbness. Like when you're given numbing medicine, of course, and all the feeling that left in your body is just this... nothingness.
You'd think it would be comforting after everything, but Ryland found it more painful than he could put words to. He liked to feel, because at least then he could cry. -
