This narrative seeks to an alternate path for Apollonia and Michael's marriage, to give it a bit more depth and chance than was allowed in both the book and film; Apollonia survives the attempted car bombing meant for her husband, and the two, traumatized from the incident, decide that a move to America is safest.
Michael is twenty-eight and Apollonia is seventeen in both the book and film, which is my reason for using the 'underage' tag.
