prologue“I would apologise,” Lady Aranessa says. “But it was me or worse.”
“Oh!” His companion dives for her dress at the sight of the Lady Royce. For his part Julien is hit with a flushed, burning shame that travels his veins like something physical, so sudden he takes half a step back. Not for his conduct, such that it was, but at the thought of her in this place and that he might be the cause of such inconvenience that a Lady of the Sundered Houses would find need to step inside a brothel. His disgraces are his own and he clings to them almost jealously; but they are not meant to touch her. They are never meant to do that.

Summary
Jester says, “You made a greenhouse,” and Essek looks up.
Palms and figs and mangroves and tree ferns reach up for the ceiling, and a sourceless waterfall spills through them. The walkway spirals upward, clinging impossibly to the dangling roots of a banyan tree, and vanishes into the greenery. Everywhere there are flowers — dusky pink orchids and brilliant bromeliads, violet and yellow and red.
Essek takes a shaky breath. “I’ll show you your rooms.”

Summary
Essek meets up with Reani. The Lightbringer is working very very hard to take a softer and more nuanced approach to the obliteration of all evil. It’s hard not seeing the world in black and white. But the good news is community service is excellent restitution. It would suck, after all, to stab hot boi Essek to death after their mutual friends literally sent him to hang out with her.
Reani and Essek fight crime. (Whether Essek likes it or not.)
