Summary
The Ladies Waldegrave is a three-person portrait painted by Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) between the years of 1780 and 1781. Reynolds was born in Plympton, England, and began painting in 1740. The portrait features three sisters (Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Anna – from left to right). Maria Walpole and James Waldegrave, the parents of the Waldegrave sisters, commissioned the portrait in hopes of finding suitors for their unmarried daughters. The portrait can be viewed at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
