Summary
He was reminded of Amami’s presence once more as he raised his voice through the wood, but that didn’t help the fact that he couldn’t move or speak. The tightness in his throat felt like a proverbial lock and key over his words much like how his muscles twinged under his command and yet never quite moved. He could feel the scowl that never fully made it onto his face, but his features laid neutral despite it all.
Or, Ouma slows down in an unpleasant fashion.

Summary
Whatever happened here was bad. Irrevocably, inexplicably, inarticulably bad in a way that the most basal parts of his being wants nothing more than to escape from. But Grace can't turn away.
After encountering what appears to be a last hoo-ra emergency mission attempt from Earth caught up in the Hail Mary's wake, Grace and Rocky discover a single, severely injured human being quite literally encased in what Grace can only describe as a crime scene. A horror movie. And when he wakes up? He's mad. Really mad. Talking to the walls mad. Now they have to figure out just where he came from and why. Things are further complicated when all the newcomer (Simon, they learn) can talk about is missing planets, haunted oceans, and non-existent space stations. That and the really weird data they've been picking up on.
Maybe part of solving that is, much to Rocky's enthusiasm; both Grace and Simon slowly realizing how lonely they are.Series

Summary
It's been a few years since Ryland Grace's well-earned retirement on Erid. He's saved one planet and given a second the tools to do the same for itself. Other than a bit of expected loneliness, he feels pretty good about the whole thing, all told.
And then one day, Erid reports an unexpected object in their system- a spacecraft. Grace, Rocky, and Adrian investigate, only to find a bizarre and impossible vessel, and inside, underneath the coating of gore, is a man on the verge of death.
Grace doesn't know what to feel about this wrench in his carefully maintained new life. Simon, who is mutated physically by his experiences, strange and aggressive and so, so scared. Their narratives don't align, and Grace can feel his new world falling apart around him just as soon as he's found it.

“You make a lot of silly mistakes like that,” Ouma comments. It’s not really true, and he can’t even think of any examples, but the words just come out independent of his brain. “You’d better get on that! Something pretty bad could happen if you’re not careful!”
“Like a terminal illness?”
“Pretty much like a terminal illness, yeah.”
A pause. Ouma is currently biting on the inside of his own cheek, wondering what he should say to escape the interaction. Maybe he should just run. Maybe he should knock Amami out and gaslight him about this later. No, he was never at the door. You’re crazy Amami. You must have been having sleep deprivation hallucinations. That sounds pretty scary, you should get that looked at.
“Do you want to come in?” Amami ventures.
Whuh huh.
