There is a letter, propped up on the crystals lining Jayce’s bedroom window sill. It is stamped with your House mark, the wax smudged by half a large fingerprint as though the letter writer were in a hurry when sealing it.
You have not read it, haven’t even opened it.
Mail piles up in the hallway, deposited through the slot in the door and only collected so as to not impede the door when the occasional visitor shows up. You ignore them as you do the letter upstairs.
You have no need to read empty condolences on your loss—even from Jayce himself.

In the dark, the words escape Jayce's mouth like a long-held sigh, a confession of sorts:
"I miss her."
Viktor doesn't ask. He doesn't need to.
"I know." He hesitates for a beat. "It's been five years, Jayce. Maybe you could... write to her."--
Jayce tries to reconnect with his mother, five years after the events that led her and the rest of Runeterra to believe he'd died saving the world from the Machine Herald.

“One more word and you are out on the street, Talis,” Viktor issues his empty threat in his coldest of voices, paired with his fiercest frown. Jayce only beams at him.
“The battle’s already lost,” he announces. “Mel’s approved my time-off ages ago. I got all the goodies,” he rattles the brown bag invitingly, “and Sky’s manning the lab. You’re not getting out of it, V.”
“Out of what?” Viktor demands, in increasing malaise, clutching at his crutch like a lifeline.
“Of fun,” Jayce says, threateningly.

He should have realized when he first caught Jayce’s lips moving in a silent conversation, or when he noticed the way Jayce tilted his head to hear sounds that weren’t there, but he had been afraid, hadn’t wanted to shatter the fragile beginnings of whatever their life was becoming after nearly ending the world.

Jayce rarely speaks now, after everything, except to converse with people that aren't there. No matter how far his mind may drift, Viktor will still care for him.
