When Eurypon had first brought up the idea of marriage over dinner, Mydeimos had shot him a look so disgusted that Eurypon was sorely tempted to take his words back if only to wipe that look off his face.
“No,” Mydeimos said simply, and turned back to his dinner as if that one word was enough to end the discussion.
“This is not something you can refuse, Mydeimos,” Eurypon said sternly. “It is your duty as the Crown Prince.”
“Then why do you look like that?” His son wondered. “Like you just ate glass.”
Eurypon hurriedly schooled his face. Well, obviously it was because he didn’t want his baby boy to get married! He should be learning the lance or… conquering cities! Not dallying with some unworthy Alpha!

Summary
Hundreds of times over, he reaches for this mask, a million times over, he reaches for this mask. Sometimes he sees the face behind it. Sometimes he touches the face behind it. Sometimes, he dies before he can do either of those things. The world goes black a hundred times, the world goes black a million times. His back torn open, his body twisted into a god’s. It happened here. It happened here. It happened here.
He jerks away with a hiss. The reverberations linger, shards of a million lifetimes hanging in the air like an executioner’s blade. And at last, the swordmaster says, hoarse voice no more than a sigh:
“My…deimos.”
Mydei stares at him for a moment, then reaches out for the third time, and this time he slides the mask gently off the swordmaster’s face.
“...Phainon,” he breathes.
in the ruins of castrum kremnos, mydei finds a dying swordmaster in black and a million cycles of lost memories; the flame reaver receives one last memory of how it felt to be loved.

He’s already lost it all, so why would he be afraid of losing a few limbs? They’d find replacements anyways. Even if they would never hold the same power, the same comfort of movement. At the time, a horrible, horrible thought had crossed his mind.
If only I was like Mydei.
To wish for a curse, one that has caused his companion nothing more than apathy to physical agony – it had been worse than the acid that had reached his soles. And yet at the time, he would have continued to fight, acid be forgotten. A reassurance in his own body’s remaking that would allow him to stake more.
He understood Mydei better, at that moment, despite the guilt.
OR
Phainon needs some physical reassurance and gets an impromptu massage that he sorta kinda agreed to.
