Summary
The first time Tara learns about magic, she’s four years old. Her mother had whispered something, lit the stovetop without touching the burner.
She’s not sure, but she doesn’t think that’s possible. She’s never seen the teacher at school do that, or anyone else, for that matter.

Summary
It’s a regular day when the head of the art theft department calls Astrid into his office. The last bits of Sophie’s case have gotten tied up, and it’s a relief. Astrid doesn’t regret anything, but she’ll sleep easier when she knows she won’t get caught lying.
“Hello.” Astrid says, knocking on the door.
“Come in.” She hears, and she goes inside, sits on the uncomfortable chair before the desk. She would bet almost anything that the chairs are uncomfortable on purpose. “Your report said you ran into Sophie Devereaux.”

Summary
“There’s something shady about that place.” Savannah says.
“What are you talking about?” Charlie says. “You haven’t even been there.”
“Yeah, but you said that one, the food is crazy good, and two, the food is so weirdly cheap, and three, all the workers seem happy to be there. Something’s going on. They’re hiding something. Either there’s rats in the kitchen, or it’s a mob front, or something.”
“So you think you’re too good to dine at a mob front?” Charlie says.
“Well, I didn’t say that.” Savannah says.

Summary
Sometimes, if you are in the right bar on a Thursday night, or at a diner in the middle of nowhere late at night, you’ll hear stories. They come in whispers, from the touring band that started in Santa Clarita, the truckers from the midwest, the odd traveling salesman. They come from someone weary, a glass cupped in their hands, or a hushed conversation, hands waving wildly to describe what they apparently saw. Sometimes the stories come from people who look like they believe in spirits and ghosts, sometimes they come from down-to-earth, practical seeming people.
The stories always come from someone who swears they are telling the truth, no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

Summary
“New case.” Dana says, and Robby sighs. Every shift is tiring, but this one especially. “Young adult, cut that’ll need stitches, maybe a blood transfusion.”
“Is that it?” Robby asks. Santos could do it with her eyes closed. Any of them could do it - no need to bring him in.
“One of the guys with her looks just like you, if you didn’t have a beard and chose to be a banker.” Dana says. “It’s freaky.”
