She glanced up at him, surprised. “It’s quite bold to assume I don’t like bookstore basements. Especially for someone I met forty-five minutes ago.”
“Forty-eight,” he corrected with a wink. “But who’s counting?”
Nesta laughed, the sound soft and startled. “I don’t know. I like quiet. Mornings, when no one else is awake. Good coffee. Dancing. In my own living room, preferably. Thunderstorms—when I’m not caught in them.”
He nodded seriously. “You’re clearly a romantic.”
“I’m clearly an introvert.”
“Same thing, some days.”
She looked up at him again—really looked. His eyes were dark, but not unreadable. He was playful, sure, but there was something gentle under it. Something that felt like it could hold weight.
And somehow, she wanted to know more. All of it. Every strange, warm piece of him.
