Work Text:
Fugo sat in the breakroom with Narancia, his legs laying across Narancia’s as the other was tapping his pencil on his open workbook.
“I fucking hate this, get a break from my shitty job only to spend it doing more work,” Narancia groaned out as he closed his workbook with the pencil keeping his place.
“Narancia, I don’t want to get a call from you at like two in the morning complaining about this because you pushed it off,” Fugo said, reopening the workbook.
“Fugo! We have seven minutes left on break, can we please actually take a break?” Narancia begged, a pleading look in his eyes.
Fugo glanced at the clock. They did only have about seven minutes left, enough time for two songs.
“Alright, we can take a real break,” Fugo said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a tangled pair of earphones and his phone. Narancia grinned as he scooted his chair closer to Fugo’s. In doing so, Fugo had to move his legs off of Narancia’s lap, but he quickly compensated by moving his chair even closer.
Narancia slung an arm over Fugo’s shoulders and pulled him closer, accepting the left earbud offered to him. Fugo slotted the right one into his ear before scrolling through his (their) playlist. Out of the corner of his eye, Fugo watched as Narancia’s face lit up as the familiar, “Vocal percussions on a whole ‘nother level,” filtered in through the earphones.
This was one of the few perks that came with working at Passione showed for Fugo. The small moments where he and his (secret) crush could just get away from everything in the back breakroom and just be in each other’s company.
Did it mean the same for Narancia as it did for Fugo? Probably not, no. Did Fugo care? Nope. All he cared about was Narancia pressed against him as the two listened to Narancia’s favorite song on their short break.
Narancia let his head fall on Fugo’s shoulder.
“Fugo, I can’t go back out there, it’s too much,” He whined as he rested on Fugo.
“After this, we only have four more hours, and then we can leave. Abbacchio is closing tonight, remember?” Fugo said. He slipped his hand around Narancia’s back and began to rub small circles.
“Will you fold the shirt stands with me? You know I hate doing it alone,” Narancia asked, leaning back into Fugo’s touch.
“I can help you with one, but then I have to be running shit back on the floor,” Fugo said, already despising the fact that Bruno put him on reshop.
“Man, why can’t people make up their mind before they get to the register? Or put their own shit back?” Narancia complained.
Fugo glanced up at the clock and saw that they only had two minutes left. Truthfully, Fugo wishes he could stay back here, just him and Narancia; but the holidays were a rough time and Fugo knew Bruno was already pulling strings to let Fugo and Narancia have their breaks at the same time instead of the break times being staggered.
“Alright, Narancia, might as well head back out now,” Fugo said. Narancia tightened his grip on Fugo. He tensed up, it didn’t mean anything to Narancia, just a friend offering some friendly contact. Stop trying to find things when they obviously weren’t there.
Narancia untangled himself from Fugo and he felt so much colder without Narancia’s presence at his side.
“Four more hours we got this!” Narancia said, trying to hype himself up as he threw his work into his bag. Fugo paused their music before tucking away his phone.
“Let’s go,” Fugo said as he gestured to the exit to the breakroom. Narancia threw his bag into the company lockers before slamming the door and jogging to catch up with Fugo. The two exited the breakroom and started navigating their way to the registers to clock back in.
“Four more hours, how bad can it be?” Narancia asked.
***
Fugo felt like killing someone. His hands were clenched into fists as he headed into the back to get his keys. How could people be so fucking entitled. He literally watched as this bastard had knocked over a display of pants, and then proceed to fucking walk away. That wasn’t even going into every person who asked where something could be located. Like, geez ma’am maybe the fucking women’s department is where the big ass sign saying WOMEN’S in big fucking letters is. He was literally going to snap one day and just go apeshit on a customer. Fucking throttle the bastard.
“Ready to go, Fugo?” A voice asked. His head snapped up and turned to see Narancia standing behind Fugo, a small smile on his face as he held his bag.
“What does it fucking look like?” He gritted out, shoving his keys down into his pocket as he stormed past Narancia.
“Fugo,” Narancia began. Fugo spun around on his heel and stared at Narancia. His face was frowning as he fiddled with the strap on his bag.
“What?” Fugo replied, trying to keep his voice level. The frown grew on Narancia’s face, and he took two hesitant steps forward. Fugo was about to turn and walk away if Narancia didn’t have anything to say, but froze when he felt the other’s arms snake around his middle.
“I know today was rough, but hey, it’s over now! So, how about we go get some shitty fast food, I’ll buy, and we can just relax,” Narancia suggested as he stood there, hugging Fugo. He felt the anger and tension slowly leaving his body. He returned the hug, pulling Narancia slightly closer.
“I’m sorry, it was just-” Fugo began.
“I know, I know. Now let’s get out of here, I’m fucking hungry,” Narancia said as he smiled up and Fugo. He nodded, and the two of them walked, shoulder’s brushing as they clocked out and left Passione.
It was cold as hell outside and the two of them ended up sprinting to Fugo’s car as the snow and wind whipped around them.
“Fugo! Unlock the damn car!” Narancia shouted as he jiggled the handle.
“You know my car doesn’t fucking do that!” Fugo shouted back.
His car was an older model, sure: the windows were hand crank, it didn’t have auto locks, and the check engine light was always on; but it had a functioning heater, and got him from point A to point B.
Narancia was still jiggling the handle as Fugo slid the key into the drivers side door. He turned the key and heard the soft click signaling the door could be opened.
He tugged on the handle, but the door refused to budge.
“Are you fucking shitting me right now!” He yelled. A nearby woman looked scandalized as she walked by.
Fugo kicked the door and tried to open it again. He could hear the ice cracking from inside the door. Fuck winter. He rammed his shoulder into the door, somewhat aware of the pain that crept up his arm.
He threw open the door, the ice falling away with a satisfying crack. He dove in and started the car, putting on the heat. He reached over and flicked the lock on the passenger door and Narancia gave a sharp kick to the center before flinging open the door.
“I fucking hate this place. I hate winter so fucking much,” Narancia said as he placed his shivering hands over the air vents.
Fugo shifted the car into reverse and backed out of the parking space, going slow because he knew nobody had salted the lot.
“Where do you want to stop?” Fugo asked as they drove out of the parking lot and past various fast food restaurants. Narancia shrugged.
“You pick, I’m cool with whatever,” He replied.
Fugo eventually settled on the McDonald’s about a block away from Passione. Yeah, it wasn’t the best food option, but they were two barely adults on a tight budget.
Fugo pulled into the drive-thru and cranked his window down, ordering two large fries and two twenty piece nuggets for him and Narancia to split.
“You want anything to drink?” Fugo whispered as Narancia dug through his bag.
“Just get a large and we can split,” Narancia whispered back. He handed Fugo a crumpled ten and a five.
“I got the change,” Fugo sad as he rooted through the center console for some coins.
They got their food and Fugo pulled off into one of the side parking spaces, Narancia already beginning to rustle through the bag’s contents.
“Aw shit, they only gave us one straw. You got any diseases I should know about?” Narancia joked as he ripped the paper off of the straw and slid it into the large soft drink.
“Just the plague, though I’m using some essential oils from my aunt,” Fugo deadpanned as he shook out the fries from the bottom of the bag. Narancia laughed before taking a sip of the drink.
Fugo bent down to get a drink and froze halfway to the straw. He would be indirectly kissing Narancia.
“Dude, you okay?” Narancia asked as he elbowed Fugo in the shoulder. Fugo took a sip and sat back up.
“Fine.”
Narancia hummed in response. The two ate their meal in a comfortable silence, the only sound being the somewhat audible static-filled pop station through the car’s speakers. Every time Fugo took a sip of the large drink he couldn’t but help think about how technically it was an indirect kiss.
He had it bad for Narancia if he couldn’t stop thinking about that.
“Thanks for paying,” Fugo said as he gathered all the trash into the bag and drove around looking for a trashcan.
“No problem. Thanks for always driving me around and stuff,” Narancia said, sheepishly.
“Don’t worry about it, you’re my friend, I’m more than happy to tote your sorry ass around,” Fugo said, giving a wide smile to Narancia.
“Hey!” Narancia yelled indigintaly. He jabbed Fugo in the stomach, smiling as Fugo wheezed.
“Take me home, plague boy, it’s fucking late as hell,” Narancia said as he reclined in his seat.
“Try and finish one homework problem, please,” Fugo said as he pulled out of the parking lot and began taking the familiar route to Narancia’s house.
“One. And only because you’re like my favorite best friend,” Narancia said.
“I’m your only best friend,” Fugo said. Yes, best friends. That’s all they were and all they are ever going to be. Narancia scoffed, but didn’t do anything else to retaliate against Fugo’s quip.
After driving for a few more minutes, Fugo pulled to a stop at the curb in front of Narancia’s house.
“Later man! Thanks!” Narancia shouted as he threw open the door and sprinted up his driveway. Fugo watched as he almost lost his balance, but managed to right himself at the last second. Cute.
Fugo shoved those thoughts to the back of his mind before pulling away from the curb and driving off. He was going to drive to his apartment and pass out the minute his head hit the pillow.
As he stepped on the brakes for a stop sign, Fugo heard what sounded like a bag sliding across the floor. Fugo rolled his eyes. How was Narancia so forgetful at times?
He did a quick U-turn as he reached for the bag on the ground. When he pulled back up to Narancia’s house, he stopped. Narancia was still out on the front porch. One hand banging at the front door, the other wrapped around his midsection. He was already shivering.
Fugo cut the engine and stepped out of his car.
“What the hell are you doing?” Fugo asked, Narancia’s bag clutched in his hand. Fugo made his way up Narancia’s driveway, being careful to keep his balance.
“Fugo? I- I think my dad switched the locks, but forgot to give me a key. I knew I was forgetting something this morning,” Narancia said though chattering teeth. “Hey, my bag!”
“Narancia, you can’t stay out here, you’ll freeze!” Fugo said, clenching his fists. Narancia rarely talked about his father, but when he did, it never failed to make Fugo’s blood boil. What kind of parent doesn't give their kid a fucking key to the house.
“Come on, you can just stay at my place,” Fugo offered. He could just sleep on the couch tonight.
“Fugo, you really don’t-,” Narancia said as he looked between the door and Fugo.
“Narancia, it’s cold as fuck out here, just come to my place. It’s fine,” Fugo said intentionally keeping his voice even. Narancia bit his chapped lower lip.
“I’m sorry,” He said softly as he pulled his coat tighter around him and started to walk off of the porch. Fugo wrapped his arm around Narancia, pulling him close.
“Don’t worry about it,” Fugo said sternly.
The two were silent as the entered Fugo’s car again. Narancia took his bag back from Fugo and was now twisting and untwisting the strap as Fugo drove. He navigated his way through the city to his apartment in silence. Narancia shivered in the passenger seat and Fugo cranked the heat up as far as it could go.
Fugo quickly pulled into the first open spot of the complex and switched out his work parking tag for the complexes tag.
“Let’s get inside,” Fugo said quietly as he locked up his car. Narancia opened the door and stepped out. He clutched his bag and jacket around his body. Fugo watched as he worried at his lower lip, and he really had to push back the thoughts of bending down and planting a kiss on Narancia’s chapped lips.
The two of them sighed as the warmth of the lobby greeted them. Fugo slipped his arm through Narancia’s linking them at the elbow.
“Elevator is out, gotta walk,” Fugo said as he led Narancia up the wooden stairs. Narancia remain silent, but Fugo did notice how he tightened around Fugo’s arm, and seemed to gravitate a bit closer to Fugo.
He was just cold, it doesn’t mean anything, Fugo told himself as they took the steps two at a time.
After walking in silence for a while, Fugo stepped onto the landing for the fifth floor, and walked three doors down. He dug through his pocket to pull out his keys, and Narancia stepped closer to Fugo.
Fugo unlocked the door and stepped inside, Purple Haze immediately barking and growling around Narancia’s legs.
“Yo, get your dog!” Narancia exclaimed as he stepped behind Fugo to avoid the small pug.
“He doesn’t bite,” Fugo said calmly as Purple Haze started to naw on Fugo’s shoe.
“Yes he does!” Narancia yelled.
Fugo bent down and gave the drooling pug a few scratches behind one mangled ear. The dog stopped biting and flopped over, now content with the attention he was receiving.
“Here, you can set your stuff on the counter, let me get you something to change into,” Fugo said, stepping over Purple Haze and heading towards his bedroom.
Narancia hesitantly followed behind, depositing his stuff on the counter as instructed. He didn’t follow Fugo into his room, however.
“Here, these should fit,” Fugo said, handing Narancia a pair of pajama bottoms and a faded band shirt, so worn you couldn’t even make out the logo.
“Thanks,” Narancia said meekly.
“Bathroom is on the other side, past the couch,” Fugo said before going back into his room. Narancia headed back to change without another word.
Fugo took the time to dig out some of the spare blankets and pillow from the top of his closet. He might as well give Narancia the bed tonight, the couch was uncomfortable as hell, and Narancia didn’t need anything else bothering him.
For Narancia, Fugo was willing to deal with discomfort.
As he was laying out the pillow and blanket he heard Narancia exit the bathroom. He looked up and immediately realized what a mistake he made.
Fugo hadn’t braced himself for the sight of Narancia in his pajamas. The shirt was baggy and Narancia had cuffed up the pants, but he still looked cute. Fuck, those were his pajamas that his longtime crush was wearing.
Fugo busied himself with making up the couch to hide the faint blush that had appeared on his cheeks.
“Thanks for doing this again, Fugo,” Narancia said. He gave a small smile to Fugo, and Fugo’s heart clenched.
“I know you’d do the same for me in a heartbeat,” Fugo replied. Narancia started to worry his lower lip again. Fugo tried to act like he wasn’t staring
“Well, thanks for making up the couch, goodnight,” Narancia finished awkwardly.
“You’re not sleeping out here, take the bed, this couch sucks ass,” Fugo said, nonchalantly.
“Well, if it’s uncomfortable I’m not gonna force you to sleep out here. It’s your fucking bed,” Narancia replied, a small scowl on his face.
“Narancia, just sleep in my bed,” Fugo said sternly. There was no way in hell he was going to submit Narancia to this couch.
“You got, what? A full?” Narancia asked peering down into Fugo’s room. Fugo’s heart skipped a beat. “Just share with me, that way nobody has to sleep on the uncomfortable couch.” Fugo’s heart stopped.
What kind of rom-com hell was Fugo in? Share the bed? With his crush?
Narancia seemed dead set on that solution, his arms crossed defiantly and his eyes narrowed at Fugo.
“Either we share the bed, or I knock you out right now and place your unconscious body on your bed. I’m not making you sleep on this fucking couch,” Narancia said after a moment of silence.
“Fine, we’ll share,” Fugo said quickly. He could feel the heat rising to his cheeks again. Narancia smiled, and not the shy smiles he had been giving since Fugo picked him up; a genuine, brighten-any-room smile. Fugo was going to go into cardiac arrest at this point.
He headed back into his room and pulled out another worn shirt and some pants. Normally, he was the type to sleep in just boxers, but there was no way in hell he was doing that with Narancia in such close proximity.
Fugo took off his shirt and spared a glance outside his room. He saw Narancia reaching out to try and pet Purple Haze from where he was lazing on the floor.
Purple Haze shot up and snapped at Narancia, who stood up and rushed into Fugo’s room slamming the door behind him.
“Dog doesn’t bite my fucking ass Fugo, that thing’s vicious,” Narancia said. He turned to look at Fugo and seemed to freeze. Fugo remembered that he was shirtless and rushed to put some article of clothing on.
“Uh, sorry Fugo, didn’t mean to interrupt,” Narancia said, his cheeks flushing red. Fugo remained silent.
After he awkwardly finished putting his pajamas on, Fugo turned and saw Narancia staring intently at outlet on the opposite wall, his back to Fugo.
“You can pick whichever side you want, I don’t care,” Fugo said, gesturing to the neatly made bed. Narancia turned around and headed over to the left side of the bed. Fugo could have sworn his cheeks were still blushing.
Fugo walked around to the right side, pulling up the covers and slipping under. He reached over to the small lamp on the bedside table and pulled the cord. He heard Narancia rustle under the covers until he finally settled down. Fugo kept his back to Narancia, not wanting to risk any contact.
“Hey, Fugo,” Narancia whispered after the two were in silence for a few minutes. Fugo rolled over until he was facing Narancia. In the darkness, he could just barely make out the other’s features. If they were about seven inches closer, their noses would be touching.
“Why are you doing all this?” Narancia asked, his voice still just barely over a whisper.
“What do you mean?” Fugo slowly replied. He didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“Like driving me around, or helping me with my schoolwork, or even this. The bed and the clothes,” Narancia explained.
“You’re my friend. Of course I’m going to help you out,” Fugo said.
“What if I don’t want to be friends anymore?” Narancia asked.
Time seemed to slow for Fugo. Narancia didn’t want to be friends. He didn’t want anything to do with Fugo. Maybe he had pieced together Fugo’s feelings and was disgusted. Wanted nothing to do with Fugo. Maybe he had been too overbearing. Or maybe he had snapped one too many times at the other boy.
“Well, then I suppose we’ll stop being friends,” Fugo replied, digging his nails into his palm. Narancia moved into Fugo’s space, their knees knocking together. Fugo flushed, why was Naranica torturing him like this?
Narancia slipped one hand up Fugo’s chest and pulled Fugo down until their foreheads met. The other snaked around and rested on the back of Fugo’s neck, fingers curling into his hair.
“I think we should stop being friends,” Narancia said, before leaning up and gently pressing his lips to Fugo.
Narancia’s lips were chapped and he tasted like the McDonald’s they had eaten, but Fugo didn’t care. Narancia was fucking kissing him. Him. Narancia was kissing him. Fugo realized that this was either an elaborate prank, a fever dream, or he had crashed his car on that fucking un-iced parking lot and had died.
Narancia slowly pulled back. He searched Fugo’s face in the dark.
“Shit. Did I read the signs wrong? Do you not fucking like me anymore? Oh shit,” Narancia said as Fugo remained motionless.
“Fuck. I didn’t meant to-Oh,” Narancia was cut off by Fugo tugging Narancia closer again and giving another kiss.
Narancia smiled into the kiss as he slipped his arm around Fugo’s shoulder to get impossibly closer to Fugo.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” Fugo said, breathless.
Narancia laughed, before giving Fugo another kiss. This time, Fugo swung his leg over the other’s thigh and pulled him closer. Narancia let out a small gasp. Fugo took this opportunity to slip his tongue into the other’s mouth. Narancia moaned into the kiss and tugged on Fugo’s hair.
Narancia shifted, and without breaking the kiss, moved to straddle Fugo. He let one of his hands travel down Fugo’s front, and Narancia bit at Fugo’s lip. Fugo shifted his hands until they rested on Narancia’s waist.
The blanket slipped off of Narancia’s shoulders and he shuddered as the cold air met his skin. Fugo tightened his grip on Narancia’s waist and was halfway through flipping their positions when he realized they were still on the edge of the bed. Shit.
Narancia started to fall back off the bed and grasped at Fugo. It was too late though, and both Fugo and Narancia went crashing to the floor.
“Fuck! I’m sorry Narancia! Are you alright?” Fugo asked, as he ran a gently hand through Narancia’s tousled hair.
“Shit, Panna, I didn’t pin you as the type to like it rough,” The other man said with a chuckle. Fugo blushed and sharply poked Narancia in the stomach. He stood up and brushed his clothes off before extending a hand to Narancia.
“I think that’s enough excitement for tonight,” Fugo said before climbing back into bed, lifting the covers for Narancia to join him. Narancia grinned before slipping into the bed, resting his head in the crook of Fugo’s neck.
Fugo’s heart was still pounding, whether it was from falling out of bed or actually fucking making out with Narancia, he couldn’t tell.
“Hey, Panna, we’re boyfriends now, right?” Narancia asked.
“Nope, still have to pass the exam before you earn the title of boyfriend of Pannacotta Fugo,” Fugo said. Narancia kicked him in the shin.
“Get some sleep, Narancia. It’s late as hell,” Fugo said before planting a chaste kiss on Narancia’s forehead.
“Goodnight, Panna,” Narancia replied. Even though it was the third time Narancia had used that nickname, Fugo still felt a grin come to his face. Fugo closed his eyes, loving the warmth Narancia was giving off. Right before he drifted off, he could have sworn he felt Narancia press a kiss to his cheek.
