Work Text:
Another sigh.
It’s been roughly 20 minutes since it started and Jimin has already lost count of how many times he sighed so far but, can you blame him? Whoever teamed them up underestimated the possible consequences of placing the four of them together.
Jimin and Jungkook are used to working together, the two of them have gone on plenty of missions since they have the best dynamics, knowing each other their whole lives and all, but not with the other two.
Besides, he got the assignment the moment he got back from vacation four days ago. Would it hurt to give him a day to re-adjust?
Anyway, the moment he got the briefing of the assignment, he wondered three things:
One, how dangerous or arduous was the job for it to require four people?
Two, how did they managed to convince Yoongi to do field work when he has declared multiple times that his job is behind a computer and nothing more?
Three, why was Kim Taehyung going too? After all, he had only started training a few months ago, was he ready for what was to come?
For the first question, during the meeting they were told that the mission itself wasn’t really complicated, it did require more than just two people though.
For the third one, Taehyung had known he was going to this mission for two weeks now but he wanted to surprise Jimin and, well, good job. It seems Taehyung had been eager to get assignments as soon as possible, to work alongside his new best friend Jimin so, as soon as this job showed up, the higher ups decided to send Taehyung. But only for a trial, for him to have some field work experience for he still lacks training.
Needless to say, Jungkook was elated to know he would get to be the senior, to boss around someone. At least on this mission.
“He’s still older than you Jungkookie,” Jimin had reminded him.
His best friend simply shrugged. “I’m still older in experience.”
The answer to the second question though, was quite unexpected and at the same time it wasn’t. It seems Yoongi and Taehyung went to the same high school and Taehyung named himself his friend and, despite Yoongi’s efforts on pushing him away, he kept coming back. In the end, he let Taehyung do as he pleased since “he wasn’t that bad.” They lost contact after high school and only reunited not so long ago, his long lost friend looking like he had been through hell and back. Taehyung said he was just going through some rough weeks but Yoongi knows better.
If it had been up to him, he would’ve gotten him a regular job and maybe give him some money for an apartment, at least until he could pay on his own but he wasn’t alone. When he met Taehyung, Hoseok was with him and, being the biggest brat-spoiler in the world, he went as far as offering to buy him an actual apartment and a job at their workplace, even if it was a desk job.
Yoongi was reluctant at first, didn’t wanted to involve this kid into their line of work but once Taehyung got the gist of what is they did for a living, he accepted immediately, saying it was an upgrade from his previous jobs and, if Yoongi was there, there was nothing to be afraid of.
And he said it with a big bright smile, the brat.
So that’s how Yoongi ended up in charge of him so he had no choice but to go with Taehyung on his first mission.
All new information Jimin and Jungkook weren’t aware of since Taehyung hadn’t said much about his past. Probably due to Yoongi, he must’ve told him not to say anything because “he’s not soft.” If only he knew that most of the people working at the Agency doesn’t buy it.
Back to why Jimin was sighing so much: he has Jungkook who, during the whole ride to the building, has been flaunting about his combat skills and the several mission in which he was close to dying but made it out alive. Of course, he doesn’t mention that it was Jimin who saved his ass most of those times but Jimin is not going to bring it up or he’ll have to deal with a pouting Jungkook for a week.
Apart from that, there’s also his hyung with a permanent scowl on his face. It’s not that Yoongi doesn’t like his dongsaeng or spending time with them but it’s 3am and he would much rather be at home, in the comfort of his bed.
“Can you shut Jungkook up for a second?” Yoongi had asked Jimin while trying to gain access to the security cameras.
“I don’t know hyung, will you be the one to deal with the aftermath of it?”
Yoongi clicked his tongue, kids these days, really. If Hoseok or Seokjin were here, they would laugh at him saying how Jimin has picked up on his sassiness.
With the control of the security cameras, they could now start their way up to the floor where their target was. Once they got to their destination, there was only a door separating them from their objective. Well, that and the door from the safe.
“Finally here… Can you open the door hyung?” Jimin asks.
“The system for this floor and the one for the cameras is different. It’ll take me a couple of minutes to open it,” Yoongi replies as he sits down on a table in the middle of the room and starts typing on his laptop.
“Wow, hyung, that looks pretty cool,” Taehyung exclaims from behind him.
“Yeah, yeah but I need silence to work. Go with Jimin,” he says not taking his eyes off the screen.
He pouts but does as told. He goes to the left side of the room, to where Jimin is standing in front of the window. “What a nice view!”
Jimin wasn’t really paying attention to the scenery but he supposes the city does look pretty at night and from the 17th floor. He hums in agreement while glancing at Taehyung, a boy Jimin is still trying to figure out. Taehyung is awfully excited for someone who chose the dangerous part of the job when he could’ve stayed safe behind a desk, not having to worry about whether or not he’ll finish a mission completely unscathed. He heard from Yoongi a summarized version of Taehyung’s life and he wonders how he manages to remain so positive. Or to at least maintain that everything-is-okay facade.
“So, what was it like? Your first mission.”
Jimin hums in thought. It’s been quite a couple of years from that but he still remembers it. “It was a complete mess,” he answers with a chuckle. “I remember I was extremely nervous and kept making mistakes.”
“You almost blew us all up that time,” Yoongi adds. Even if he was focusing on his job, he was still aware of his surroundings and he also never misses a chance to tease Jimin.
“Unless you’ve finished opening that door, don’t talk,” Jimin snaps but at Yoongi’s raised eyebrow he decides to add “Hyung” with a smile. He sticks his tongue out once Yoongi goes back to his work.
“Were you okay tho?” Taehyung asks.
“Yeah, I just got some orders wrong but the mission turned out okay in the end and Jungkookie made mistakes too so I wasn’t the only one scolded. Ah, but don’t tell him I told you that or he’ll blame me for ruining his image.”
Taehyung snorted. “Wouldn’t dare to anyway, he seems like he could break both my arms in a second…”
“He could and he has.”
“Wait, for real?” Taehyung asks, eyes wide open.
“Well, that’s what the guy gets for messing with Seokjin-hyung and for underestimating him, thinking he could take on Jungkook only because he was 19,” Jimin shrugs while thinking back to that day. Those who were present learned to never push the maknae’s limits.
“19? That’s really young tho… Well, you did mentioned you two have been doing this for quite a while.”
“We’ve been with the Agency for around 10 years since Seokjin-hyung rescued us, I was 15 and Jungkook was 13. But our first mission was… 6 years ago if math doesn’t fail me.”
Taehyung was looking at him with such an awed expression that Jimin felt like blushing but that wouldn’t be professional so he simply turned his head to look through the window.
“I’ve heard some stories about the best duo and they’re pretty awesome so I hope I get to learn a lot more from you! Will you be free after this mission? I want you to teach me how to shoot, I’ve heard you’re really good!” Taehyung rambled on, full on excitement.
Jimin feels somewhat proud to have someone look up to him. He does have Jungkook who always has admired him in a way, him being the oldest, always making sure their basic needs were covered and always protecting him. But to be someone’s role model… Jimin’s not going to lie, he loves that feeling.
Jimin scratches the back of his neck and looks away again. For some reason, Taehyung’s smile is far too bright in the dimly lit room.
Taehyung continued talking to him, retailing stories about his high school days with Yoongi. The only reason his hyung hasn’t murdered them is because he’s completely focused on opening the door but he will probably kill them after this mission is finished. But it’s completely worth it knowing all this future blackmail material.
And also because Taehyung thinks Jimin’s laugh is really beautiful even if it’s muffled due to wanting to be as silent as possible.
It took a bit more than 4 minutes for Yoongi to open the door. He quickly took his backpack and stood up to walk inside the room and finish the mission as quickly as possible but there were two people in the room who seemed to have forgotten where they were.
“How about you two stop flirting for a minute and start being professionals so we get this shit done?” Yoongi grumbled.
Jimin blushed and glared at his hyung. He wanted to deny such accusation but Taehyung beat him to it.
“Just like you and-” Taehyung started with a grin plastered on his face.
“If you know me, you know it’ll be in your best interest to not finish that sentence,” he sneered before turning back and heading inside the room, followed closely by Jungkook who raised an eyebrow at Jimin and cocked his head in Yoongi’s direction. Jimin nods at him.
Yes, they were definitely getting that information out of Taehyung later. But for now, he just shakes his head to brush off the blush and rushes to catch up with his other two teammates.
Inside is their target, a 6.5 feet tall safe with all the information they need inside it. There’s also an huge amount of money and other goods but they don’t really care about those.
Usually, open such a safe would be a task that requires hours but not if you have Jimin on your team. Especially the one he has in front of him right now, he’s seen it before. It shouldn’t take him more than 15 minutes at most.
He smirks as he lays down his backpack that contains the necessary elements to carry his task. Yoongi went to a side of the small room and sat with his back against the wall to keep an eye on the security cameras through his laptop. Jungkook sent Taehyung to be the look-out for a while while he laid down on the floor thinking that maybe he shouldn’t have stayed up so late playing games.
Ten minutes went by. Taehyung had walked back to the room since “Yoongi is watching the cameras anyway” and sat cross legged between Jungkook and Jimin.
“Oh! This would look so good on you! It’ll match your blond hair!” exclaimed Taehyung while showing Jimin his phone.
“I’m trying to crack open a safe, be quiet!” Jimin scolded him.
“Are you using internet while on a mission?!” Jungkook sat up and stared at his phone. “And that’s hideous!”
“I have it on my gallery! And it’s beautiful, you uncultured swine!”
“Like hell it is! And don’t call me that! I’m sure I know more-”
“There, it’s open. Now shut up and get the stuff,” Jimin glared at the two.
Both boys reluctantly got up and walked inside the safe to get the hard drives they needed but not without bantering in the meantime. Jimin sighed while he stretched his sore limbs. He looked in Yoongi’s direction, his hyung was intently looking at the screen, headphones on. At the same moment, Yoongi raised his head and voiced one of the worst sentences to hear during a mission: “We have company.”
Jimin rushed to his side. The screen showed the basement where a car was parking and four people got off it. “But… why? It was supposed to be clear today.”
“I don’t know but we need to get the hell out of here. We outnumber them but maybe they have backup close by,” he grumbled, annoyed just thinking that they might end up in a confrontation with those guys. He quickly packed up his laptop and switched to his tablet while Jimin ran to the safe to hurry up the other two.
Luckily, they had made backup plans in case something like this were to happen because one can never be sure.
Backpacks secured, guns locked and loaded on their hands. Jungkook was leading the group while Jimin was at the end, Yoongi behind Jungkook as the guide. It was a big building so hopefully they won’t cross-
Yoongi halted in his steps and placed a hand on Jungkook’s shoulder to make him stop. He noticed on one of the cameras on the first floor how one of the men was talking through what seemed to be a walkie-talkie of sorts and was making signals to his men, most likely indicating them where to go.
“We need to hurry, they’re calling for backup,” Yoongi whispered.
Jimin sighs and turns Taehyung around, placing his left hand on his shoulder. “Alright Tae, hopefully we’ll leave without encountering them but if we do, always stick close to one of us. Just remember all you’ve practised and most importantly, do not panic,” he finishes with a light squeeze on Taehyung’s shoulder.
Taehyung nods at him and so they resume their walk, Yoongi indicating the way to the emergency stairs to Jungkook. Yoongi’s frown deepens when he sees the number of cars parking in the basement. They’re completely outnumbered now, a confrontation is inevitable. Hopefully, they won’t be able to undo the hacking in the security cameras which will leave them no choice but to spread and search for them which in return will give them more possibilities to exit the building with the least amount of conflict.
Jimin grits his teeth and huffs in exasperation. There was simply no way for them to have called backup in less than 3 minutes, even if they have managed to get back control of the cameras.
They were sold out.
That only manages to make Jimin even more pissed off. If there’s one thing he absolutely hates its betrayal, it’s something he cannot tolerate. Maybe it’s because the Agency picked them up from the dirt and gave them a roof, a family, a purpose to their lives so maybe that’s why he can’t comprehend such a concept.
His internal raging dialog is interrupted by Yoongi who tells them to take the next exit since there are at least three armed men heading to their position from downstairs.
They exit through the door leading to the third floor in complete silence, guns at eye level, making their way to the emergency stair on the other side of the floor when Yoongi suddenly hissed “Hide!”
Yoongi and Jungkook rushed into a room to their left while Jimin dragged Taehyung back to a room they passed on their right. Once inside, Jimin cursed internally. It was the conference room, not a really good place to hide. Having no time to walk out and find some other place, Jimin made a move to grab Taehyung to the stage, to hide behind the podium when the door was suddenly opened by a tall buff guy.
In less than a second, he immobilized Taehyung from behind and pressed his gun on his temple. The guy was using Taehyung as a shield and, combined with darkness of the room, it made it difficult for Jimin to get a clean shot.
“You made the wrong choice by coming here. Now you’re surrounded and there’s no way you’re making it out of here alive so put your gun down if you don’t want your teammate’s blood on your hands,” he threatened, pressing the gun harder on Taehyung’s temple.
Jimin sighs in annoyance. How dare this low class thug place his filthy hands on Taehyung and threaten his life. If he could get his friend to move just a little bit-
“Are you deaf?! Throw your gun or your friends gets it! I won’t hesitate to shoot!”
Meanwhile, Taehyung was thinking on how to get out of this situation. He closes his eyes and thinks back to training. He knows Jimin taught him something but what was it?
“You’ll probably find yourself in this situation at least once and there are many ways to escape it but you need more practice for some so I’ll tell you something Yoongi-hyung did years ago. I thought it was pure luck that it worked but I’ve tried it a couple of times and…”
“And…?” Taehyung had asked, expectantly.
“And it worked. Every single time… But you need to make it believable. For starters-”
“-will shoot at him! Don’t test me!”
Taehyung exhaled deeply, he needed to calm down his heartbeat and speak the next words without a hint of nervousness. “You know,” he started, sounding bored and effectively shutting up the guy holding him captive. “You keep blabbing about how you’re gonna kill me that I’m starting to doubt you. Just get over with it already.”
Buff guy was rendered speechless and his hold on Taehyung slackened for a moment which was exactly what he wanted. Taehyung grabbed the man’s wrist with his left hand and twisted it, making him drop the gun. Then, with his free hand, he punched the guy right in the middle of the face but before he could even protest in pain, Jimin rushed and knocked him out. They couldn’t afford to have anyone be alerted of their position by the man’s cries of pain.
Once sure the man wasn’t going to wake up anytime soon, Jimin refrained his impulse of wanting to hug Taehyung and settled for patting him on the shoulder. “That was awesome Tae, you did great!”
Taehyung smiled at him, that big bright smile he’s known for. “I just remembered what you taught me.”
Jimin sighs in relief at seeing that Taehyung effectively didn’t panic and was able to remember his training and put it into action. If he keeps training, he can definitely make a good agent in the future.
“Jiminie?”
Oh.
He was staring at Taehyung.
He was staring at him with his hand still on his shoulder and they were too close but since when does it matter how close they are? He hugs people all the time, why is this any different? And why does the nickname coming from him sound different too? He doesn’t get it and he shouldn’t even be thinking about this, not right now.
Luckily, Yoongi’s voice is heard through the earpiece informing them that the coast is clear. Jimin clears his throat and tells Taehyung to get moving. Yoongi notices how Jimin is avoiding looking at them in the eyes in contrast to Taehyung’s cheerful expression but doesn’t comment on it. Not until they’re out of the building, safe and sound.
They reach the emergency stairs and start making their way down, as fast as possible without being too loud. They stop at the door leading to the basement, watching as Yoongi checks the security cameras. He gives a nod of approval and Jungkook slowly opens the door letting all of his teammates walk out, gently closing it afterwards.
There’s no one to stop them there. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Jimin made Taehyung say he had spotted the intruders on the 7th floor using the knocked out guy’s radio.
They allow themselves to breathe once they get inside the van they used for transport.
“Wow, that was amazing! I can’t believe that just happened!” Taehyung started rambling excited. Jungkook, who was in the front seat asked him about his hand. “Oh, there was a guy that was helding me at gunpoint but I remembered what Jiminie taught me so I got free and punched him!”
“Oh, did you use Yoongi-hyung’s technique?” Jungkook asks, he remembers being there when Jimin taught him that.
Yoongi, who was driving, frowned at that. “The hell is that?”
“It’s what you did that time you got held at gunpoint and told the guy to stop talking and shoot.”
Yoongi groaned. He remembers getting scolded by Seokjin for that. “What have you been teaching this kid Jimin?”
“But hyung,” Taehyung protested. “It works!”
Yoongi sighs and shakes his head as he continues driving. At least the kid is safe, he thinks.
Jimin doesn’t say a word, he’s fine with just contemplating an excited Taehyung retailing their mission and the thrill he felt the whole time. He’s seen newbies been terrified to their bones who never want to return to the field again but not Taehyung. His mental strength is high which is good since he’ll need it if he wants to survive.
Once back at the Agency, Yoongi makes his way to Seokjin’s office to report their mission and so he can finally go to sleep while Jungkook just waves at them before making his way to the lockers to change to his normal clothes.
Once alone, Jimin drags Taehyung to the infirmary to bandage his hand. It’s not a serious wound, it’ll leave a bruise at most but that’s about it. Jimin tells himself that he just wants to make sure that all the previous excitement Taehyung had wasn’t due solely to the adrenaline but if you ask him if he’s enjoying touching Taehyung’s soft hands, he’ll absolutely deny it.
“Thank you.”
Jimin got startled but quickly brushed it off. “It’s okay, it’s not a serious wound anyway-”
“No, I mean for letting me join you today. Boss said final decision was up to you.”
“Oh, that,” he hums in thought. “It’s true and I almost reject the idea but I’ve seen you practising and I noticed your determination so I thought I could give you a shot.”
“And?” Taehyung asks, a hint of concern on his voice.
“You exceeded my expectations Tae! You did great today!”
Jimin smiles, that beautiful eye smile that has Taehyung smiling back without even noticing but what he does notices is how Jimin is still holding his hands and how warm they are. “Hey, Jimin?” Jimin hums to let him know he’s listening. “Are you free tomorrow? I mean, later today”
Jimin’s mind unhelpfully makes him jump to the conclusion of a date. He tries to stop it before he blushes but when he sees Taehyung’s smile, he knows it’s late. “You mean to train or… something like that?”
“Something like that.”
“Then sure. Same place, same time.”
“Oh, and, Jimin?”
“Yes?”
“You’re still holding my hands,” he says with the most fake innocent smile.
Jimin’s eyes widen at the realization and immediately draws them back, cursing under his breath for acting like such teenager with a crush which he is most definitely not. He pouts when he looks up and finds Taehyung laughing and dares to call him cute. That’s just really not helping Jimin with his blush.
“Shut up and go to sleep,” he grumbled while making his way out of the infirmary.
Taehyung follows him, still laughing which resulted in an even more pouting Jimin which made Taehyung think of how adorable he looks. But when Jimin turns around, all red, calling him a brat and to just go already, he realizes he actually said it out loud.
But Taehyung doesn’t really care. All he cares about right now is that he made a good job today, he got praised, got treated by Jimin and he’s going to see him again in the afternoon.
He can’t wait but first, sleep or adorable Jimin will turn into scary Jimin and will have his head.
“Taehyung, shut up!”
Ah, he said it out loud again.
But it’s okay, he’ll just do what it takes to make it up to him later today.
“Kim Taehyung, I swear to God…”
But first, he needs to fix that of speaking his mind.
Jimin glares at him.
And fix it fast.
