Chapter 1: Welcome Back

Chapter Text

Eighty percent of the human species were born with abilities that can rival the gods themselves. But not even they or humankind knew of the existence of a greater power above them. One that was so powerful that it can build and reign empires to its golden age and dangerous enough to bring about their downfall through chaos and destruction.

This creature goes by many names all throughout its immortal life. And after another fifty years, its cycle ended, bursting into fiery green flames once more on its nest near a beautiful valley and turning back into ash from whence it came. From the ashes, a featherless chick popped out, curiously chirping at the world around it.

Ten more years went by and the once naked newborn foul was now a handsome young bird; his black and forest green feathers shimmer like gemstones when caught in the soft sunlight, complementing the bright green of the flames flowing from his tail and crest.

He knew he was ready to travel the world anew; thus, the majestic creature was ablaze with jade fire, and in a blink of an eye, he was gone.

He knew where he wanted to go. He hasn’t visited Japan in a long time. Sure, Greece praises its marvelous Pantheon with its marble surfaces preserved to a shine; Saudi Arabia boasts its gorgeous architecture that is Taj Mahal; even Japan is known for many things, from the innovation of its bullet train to the beautiful blooming of soft pink cherry blossoms during spring that attracted many foreigners.

But that wasn’t the only reason he was back, his bright green flames alit to announce his arrival.

You could say that he’s here to visit an old friend. And when he meant old, he meant two-hundred-years-had-passed-and-he-hasn’t-aged-a-bit old. Though, it would make sense since this friend of his isn’t exactly human either.

His first task was to find him. He probably already knows that he has returned by the parting gift he gave to his friend from the first few years they’ve met.

So instead of teleporting there with his fire, he spread his wings wide open to feel the air through his feathers, then took off to the sky in a neck breaking speed with the flames of his tail and crest trailing behind him.

The mammalian principal of UA stood behind his desk, staring out the window as if he’s waiting for someone.

He knew who it was and he knew he was coming. After all these years, he finally came back. And he had never been so happy to welcome someone back in his life.

Nedzu smiled as the forest green feather that he made into a brooch glowed brighter against his dark navy blue vest, signaling that he’s close.

The principal loved this brooch. The feather that sparkled like a delicate emerald gemstone when the light hits it in the right angle is something special to Nedzu. When people asked why it was so, he would always answer that it was given to him by a friend; he wouldn’t elaborate any further.

Speaking of friends, it looks like the feather was now glowing brighter than ever that it almost made Nedzu squint. He looked away from it to avoid getting blinded by its intensity when he saw what looked like a flaming bird hovering just outside his office window.

After their first meeting all those centuries ago, the mammalian principal spent the next few days finding out more about the extraordinary creature in front of him; in which he came to identify as a phoenix. Even the creature himself told him this fact.

The only difference from the mythological version and the one his friend is is that his fire and flames were, clearly, green, instead of the warm reds and oranges that were usually depicted on phoenixes. He had also discovered that his flames are a thousand times hotter than a normal fire if a mortal was ever to get in close contact with them.

But they never burn solid ground unless the creature wills them to do so. And that is the most intriguing yet intimidating fact about him. It’s that the phoenix has otherworldly capabilities so strong that he can bend and twist the heavens at his command or end the world as they know it.

However, Nedzu knows better than to doubt the intentions of his friend. After all, even he acts like a god himself (though he doesn’t like being called that), helping those in need and punishing those who are wicked and cruel.

And that is why he’s glad to see him again after many, many years. Nedzu’s smile grew even wider.

“It’s good to see you again, old friend.”
