UA High School’s men’s volleyball team gets the opportunity to attend a training camp in Tokyo before the Spring Interhigh National Tournament Qualifying Rounds. The catch? Students who fail their exams won't be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities until they complete a supplementary class that happens to coincide with the dates of the training camp. Katsuki, team captain of UA’s men’s volleyball team, has a lot on his plate trying to make sure every member of his team attends the training camp. Good thing his loving, patient boyfriend Izuku Midoriya, school newspaper editor and amateur sports photographer, knows his way around books just as well as he knows sports.

Work Text:

“What the hell is wrong with all of you? I can’t believe half of my team is this stupid!” Katsuki rubbed the space between his eyebrows. He could feel a headache coming on. “We can’t go to the training camp in Tokyo with just half the team! None of you extras are allowed to fail your exams, do you hear me?!”

Kirishima, Denki, and Sero sobbed into their textbooks. “We’re trying!”

“Give it a rest, Bakugou,” Iida sighed as he put his textbook down. “Look, I think we all need a break. So, everyone, take a stretch, get a snack, do whatever you need to do. We’ll meet back here in an hour.”

“YAY!”

Denki and Sero were already out the door running to the nearest corner store to get snacks, leaving Katsuki, Iida, Todoroki, Kirishima, Shinso, Tokoyami, and Shouji in the living room of the Bakugou household.

“You really should go easy on them,” Iida suggested gently, placing a well-meaning hand on Katsuki’s shoulder.

Katsuki tensed slightly at his vice captain’s gesture before letting his shoulders sag. “Yeah, yeah… It’s just— We don’t have much time left… And we promised we would make it this year…”

Katsuki, Iida, and Todoroki were in their third and final year of high school, meaning they would soon be leaving the second years (Shinso, Tokoyami, and Shouji) and the new first years (Denki, Sero, and Kirishima). The weight of responsibility felt heavy on Katsuki’s shoulders. For the first time in a long time, they had hope of making it all the way to nationals.

He remembered the day the previous captain, Mirio, came up to him and decided to make him the new captain. It was right after they lost in the first round of the qualifying rounds, losing their chance at going to nationals.

“I know you’re upset. I am too,” Mirio said as he placed a hand on Katsuki’s shoulder much like the way Iida was doing now. Honestly, Katsuki wouldn’t even have known behind Mirio’s 1,000-watt smile and bright blue eyes. “But Tamaki and I will be in the stands watching you lead the new team at nationals! I’m even gonna get tickets now!”

Tears pricked at the corner of Katsuki’s eyes. “Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. You might regret spending all that money.”

But the loss and the new responsibility took a heavy toll on Katsuki. He wasn’t like Mirio—wasn’t a bundle of positivity in the face of one of the worst losing streaks in the history of the men’s volleyball team. Honestly, it was a wonder how they even got to the qualifying rounds in the first place. But no, Katsuki was loud, blunt, brash, and aggressive. The third and second years were already used to his behavior, but not him as their leader. And the first years—well, Katsuki scared away most of the interested students at the beginning of the year. The only three that stayed were Kirishima, Denki, and Sero—the three that were too dumb to run away from him.

Katsuki would never say this out loud, but seeing those three play gave him a newfound hope that they could really do it. He felt like they really had a solid chance at playing at the national tournament. First, there was Eijirou Kirishima. Even though he was a first-year, he was already about as tall as Katsuki and about as muscular as him too—broad shoulders and chest. On the court, they nicknamed the red-haired middle blocker ‘the unbreakable wall’. Then, there was Denki Kaminari—a never-ending bundle of energy and one of the best liberos Katsuki had seen in a while. No matter what, he never let the ball hit the ground, always running full charge ahead. Katsuki was surprised that the boy wasn’t injured as much as he should have been—he’d dive and roll onto the ground, jump over chairs, even jumped right into the wall to save a ball. Last, there was Hanta Sero—the glue that held those three idiots together. The wing spiker was reliable and could get as much height as Iida or their ace Fumikage Tokoyami.

“We’re back! And we brought snacks!” Denki announced as he and Sero dropped three grocery bags full of cold drinks and snacks onto the floor.

“Oi, we’re the ones who should be treating you,” Katsuki shook his head as the corner of his lips twitched up slightly into a grin. “What do you think you’re doing making your upperclassmen look bad.”

“No worries! Just treat us to dinner after the training camp!” Denki suggested with a grin. “After all, I’d never deny dinner from a senpai.”

Katsuki wanted to roll his eyes and gag at the way Denki was blatantly eyeing Shinso, hoping the purple-haired insomniac would take the hint. But Denki had no such luck—Shinso was too busy playing on his Gameboy to heed him any attention. Katsuki would never understand what the energetic blonde saw in the team’s alternate setter. Shinso was relatively new to the game. In middle school, he was a shy, awkward kid, so he had trouble trying to join the middle school volleyball team. Even though Shinso was new, he was on the fast track to being as good of a setter as Todoroki.

Happily, the team grabbed a snack or two and enjoyed the last few moments relaxing before they went back to study.

“Alright, you annoying extras, let’s get back to it,” Katsuki announced as he gathered the trash.

Kirishima whined. “No offense, Bakubro, but no matter how many times you, Iida, or Todoroki explain this stuff, I just can’t see to wrap my mind around it…”

Katsuki sighed. “How about you two?”

Sero and Denki nodded sheepishly. “Sorry…”

Iida shook his head. “No, that’s perfectly fine. How we study is helpful to us. It might not connect with you in the same way.

“Might be time to call in the big guns, captain,” Shinso suggested, tapping away at the Gameboy in his hand.

Katsuki sighed as he pulled out his phone and dialed a number. He held it in the palm of his hand.

“Yes, honey bunny?”

“Oi! You’re on speaker, nerd.” A blush crept onto Katsuki’s face.

“Oh, okay, Kacchan. I’ll behave!”

Too late for that though. His team was already on the floor rolling with laughter.

“H-H-Honey bunny?” Kirishima cackled.

“Trust me when I say it isn’t the worst thing I’ve heard Midoriya call him,” Tokoyami mumbled from his place on the couch next to Shouji who was peacefully napping through the whole ordeal.

The laughter intensified.

“Fuck off, shitty extras!” Katsuki yelled before clearing his throat. “Please help us tutor these idiots, babe.”

A chime of laughter rang from Katsuki’s phone. “Sure, Kacchan. Give me 10 minutes.”

“You live fucking next door, why do you need 10 minutes?” Katsuki huffed. “You with your other boyfriend or something?”

“I was in the middle of editing photos! Stop being so needy, Kacchan!” Izuku whined over the phone. “I’ll be right over, okay?”

Izuku promptly hung up the phone and Katsuki crossed his arms. “What are you dumbasses looking at.”

His teammates were all staring at him, trying to stifle their laughter.

“I don’t know how he’s put up with you all this time,” Todoroki commented cooly while sipping on his soda.

It was a well-known fact that volleyball team captain Katsuki Bakugou was dating school newspaper editor and amateur sports photographer Izuku Midoriya. They had been neighbors and friends since they were four years old, so it was only natural that the two ended up together.

Ten minutes later, Izuku arrived at Katsuki’s home, just as he said he would, armed with a backpack full of notebooks. “Hi, everyone!”

A chorus of “Hey, Midoriya!” sounded throughout the living room.

Izuku sat next to Katsuki and the two shares a quick peck on the lips. “What subject should we do first?”

“History, please,” Sero groaned.

After about two hours of studying, the team gathered their things to leave.

“Thanks so much for your help, Midoriya-senpai!” Sero, Denki, and Kirishima bowed.

Izuku raised his hands, flustered by their enthusiasm. “Y-You’re welcome. Just remember to take your time to understand and retain the information. You still have a week to study, and that’s more than enough time. Just follow the study schedule I made and you’ll be ready for finals and the training camp! And if you do extra well, I’ll even buy you dinner! My treat!”

You could practically drown in the tears that erupted from the first years’ eyes. “Midoriya-senpai is so cool!”

“100% or nothing, extras!” Katsuki popped up from behind Izuku and pointed menacingly at the first years.

Izuku was quick to elbow him in the ribs. “B- at least in your weakest subjects. That sounds fair enough, right, Kacchan?”

Izuku’s warning tone caused Katsuki to huff. “That’s not even a challenge, Izuku. It’ll be no problem for them.”

“Captain really believes in us!” Kirishima exclaimed, and soon the three piled on top of Katsuki.

“Oi, get off of me, damn first years,” Katsuki growled as he pushed them off of him. “Now go home and get to bed at a decent hour! I’m looking at you, eye bags!”

Shinso rolled his eyes and waved Katsuki off dismissively.

“Oh, Shinso-senpai, we’re going the same way, right?” Denki asked with a grin as he bounded up to the sleepy-looking boy. “Let’s walk together!”

Shinso shrugged his shoulders. “We’re leaving now,” he announced to the rest of their teammates. He and Denki left first followed by Sero and Kirishima, then Shouji and Tokoyami.

“You sure you don’t want us to stay and help clean up?” Iida asked as he picked up spare wrappers and tossed them in the trash.

“Nah, we got it,” Katsuki reassured. “You two can head home.”

“Bye, Iida! Bye, Todoroki!” Izuku called with a happy wave as the two third years left, leaving Izuku and Katsuki on their own.

Katsuki was in the kitchen washing the dishes when a pair of arms wrapped around his waist from behind. Soft lips kissed over his shoulder, and Katsuki smiled softly at his boyfriend. “So, the training camp… Do you know which teams are gonna be there?”

Katsuki hummed as he rinsed the dishes in his hands. “Shiketsu and Ketsubutsu for sure… Not sure about the other teams.”

“Oh? Since they’re from different prefectures, that means you won’t be playing them in the qualifiers.”

Katsuki nodded. “So it’s a good and bad thing. Good because we get to work out our weak points with tough teams without any lasting consequences and we get to play against them before nationals. That is if we make it that far…”

A hand gripped Katsuki’s chin and tilted it to the side. Izuku planted a gentle kiss onto Katsuki’s lips. “You will. And I’ll be right there beside you every step of the way.”

Katsuki chuckled and turned around, wrapping his arms around Izuku’s waist. “Oh? Gonna follow me all the way to nationals? Stalker.”

Izuku giggled before pulling Katsuki into a deep kiss. He soon found himself pressed against the kitchen counter with Katsuki’s strong arms caging him in on either side. Effortlessly, Katsuki lifted his boyfriend onto the counter without breaking the kiss.

“H-Hey, Kacchan,” Izuku asked timidly as he pulled away. “Are your parents still on that business trip?”

“Hm? Yeah, they’ll be gone for two more days. Why?”

Izuku bit his lip shyly and played with Katsuki’s hair. “C-Can I stay the night, then?”

Katsuki chuckled, pulling Izuku into a passionate kiss. “Oh? Someone’s getting bold.”

“N-No, it’s not that!” Izuku waved his arms. “I-I mean, it can be like that—I’m not opposed to, well, um, doing that, if you want to do that, but we don’t have to do that. We can just watch a movie and c-cuddle or something, but, I mean, if y-you’d like—“

Katsuki quickly shut Izuku up with another kiss. “A movie sounds perfect, baby.”

Izuku smiled softly and wrapped his arms around his boyfriend’s neck. “Can we watch All Might 2?”

Katsuki rolled his eyes as he carried Izuku to the living room. “Superhero movies again, nerd? You’re lucky I like you so much.”

Notes:

Short and sweet! Sorry this took so long. I LOVE Haikyuu!! but I'm also as athletic as a celery stick, so I tried to avoid actually writing volleyball scenes as much as possible 😂 . If you haven't watched Haikyuu!! yet, I highly recommend it!
