The "#ThatJacksonKid" Mystery

Some of you may recognize the name 'Percy Jackson' from Buzzfeed Unsolved fame. For those of you who do not, let me recap the situation: in 2010 a twelve-year old boy went missing, was accused of kidnapping his own mother, and was allegedly involved in multiple violent explosions (his mother's car, a bus, several police cars, and of course the St Louis Arch) before heroically battling his kidnapper at gunpoint on the beaches of Santa Monica and returning home safe and sound.
There were several discrepancies with the official story of events, which our very own Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej pointed out in their show, and the internet has taken it upon itself to investigate this mystery.
Some users have claimed to have current information on Jackson's whereabouts, while others simply shared tales of their interactions with him as a child. One user even claimed supernatural involvement! Thus far we have not been able to verify these stories.
We will keep you posted as things develop.

An Interview with Piper McLean

I'm here today with a very special visitor: Piper McLean. Made famous by her superstar father, actor Tristan McLean, Piper has thus far lived a very quiet life. Today she breaks her media silence to put certain stories to rest, once and for all.
You've historically stayed as far from your father's spotlight as you can; mind telling me why that's changed?
Well, it hasn't changed, really. I'm not planning to become an actor or a model or follow in my father's footsteps in that kind of way. That's just not what I want to do with my life. I've never done anything like that, and I've still showed up in magazines and been followed by the paparazzi just by the virtue of being my father's daughter. I think I've realized now that it's never going to stop, not as long as the media knows where I am, so either I learn to live with it or I go into hiding.
Since you're here today, I assume you chose to live with it?
Yeah. I spent most of my teenage years hiding, and I hated it. I think the longest I went without appearing in a magazine was two years and that was because I was states away from my father, attending a boarding school that had very little contact with the outside world, and lying to everyone about who I was. I had to listen to other girls talk about how attractive my father is and not be able to say anything, because I knew if I did, the secret would be out and I'd have to move again. I don't want to live like that anymore.
There's a difference between 'not hiding' and deliberately seeking out media attention, and yet you made the choice to set up this interview.
The media has known where I am since the beginning of college. I graduate next spring. That's three years of paparazzi following me around, sneaking photos, accusing me of dating every boy I've so much as said two words to. I guess my thought process was, if you're going to be talking about me, you may as well be saying the right things. So here I am, telling you the truth about my life so people can stop speculating.
I suppose that gives us a pretty obvious place to start. How's your dating life?
I'm not currently dating anyone. I'm not looking to date, either, so please don't use this to speculate about possible crushes or potential future boyfriends. I'm perfectly happy being single, and I think it's better that way while I get my life figured out. I was dating someone for a while, from when I was fifteen to when I was eighteen. He's not famous and as far as I know he was never photographed with me. It was an amicable breakup, if that helps; he and I are still very good friends, we just aren't romantically involved.
And there's been no one since then? You're twenty now, so that's two years since you broke up. No other boys caught your eye?
Like I said, I haven't really been looking. Being in a relationship isn't some kind of happy ending that I need to be working towards. I like being single and I'm perfectly happy to stay that way for as long as I need. (a pause.) And, for the record, it would be just as likely for a girl to catch my eye as a boy.
You're bisexual?
Yes, that's the term I prefer.
I'll be sure to ask about cute girls, next time, as well as boys.
Much appreciated, although I'm sure you understand I won't say much about either.
Other than dealing with the paparazzi, how have you been enjoying college life? Do you feel that people treat you differently because of your fame?
To some extent, yes, they do. I don't have much of a social life on campus, which is unfortunate, but it can be hard for me to make friends without feeling like they're only interested in me because of my father. I couldn't count on one hand the number of times I've thought someone was a friend and then they've asked me for my father's autograph. Not everyone is like that, but it just makes socializing hard. I do have a very good group of friends from my teenage years, the friend group that my ex-boyfriend is a part of, and they're great. We facetime at least once a week and text way more often than that. My best friend Leo came to college with me, which is great, and Percy was in town last month for a visit. So yeah, not a lot of new friends, but plenty of old ones that I'm still in touch with.
You said earlier that a relationship isn't the 'happy ending' that you're striving towards. Could you elaborate some on what you are striving towards and what that looks like for you?
Of course! I have to admit, I'm much more comfortable talking about this than my love life. (a laugh.) As I'm sure you already know, I've just entered my senior year of college at VCU- that's Virginia Commonwealth University. My current plan is to get my bachelor's and move straight into becoming a social worker, although I have considered sticking around to get a master's first. My family is Cherokee and, although I was lucky enough to be raised by my father, there is a disproportionate number of Native American children in the foster care system. I won't get into the statistics, but let's just say that there's racism in the way child welfare checks are determined and leave it at that. I want to be able to help those children and my community, and I think that social work is the best way for me to do that.
That's an admirable goal. Do you intend to stay in Virginia after graduating, or are you planning on moving somewhere else? Back to California, for example, or to Oklahoma where you grew up?
I haven't decided yet. I wish there was a better answer I could give you there, but honestly, I just don't know. I have friends and family in California, New York, and Oklahoma, or I might just go somewhere completely different. It all depends on what job offers I get, I suppose. We'll have to wait and see.
Well, wherever you decide to go, I think they'll be lucky to have you.

Potential '#thatjacksonkid' Movie: Netflix Vies for Story Rights
In a statement released just a few hours ago, Netflix spokespeople confirmed that they are looking into creating a movie and/or tv series based around #thatjacksonkid, a real-life mystery being investigated by amateur sleuths on Twitter. As the people involved in this story are still alive today, Netflix has reached out to multiple sources (including social activist Rachel Elizabeth Dare and up-and-coming young architect Annabeth Chase) for permission to share the story.
In a Twitter post three hours ago, Netflix stated, "We at Netflix understand the right to privacy of all involved. For that reason, we will not be sharing any details of this potential project until we receive permission from everyone involved in the story."
Although she has yet to publicly comment on Netflix's statement, Ms Dare has liked several tweets which seem to stand against it. One such tweet reads: "as if. RED would never support these jokers." Based on her liking of these tweets, it seems unlikely that Netflix will gain the necessary permissions.
If Netflix does go ahead with this project, it could feature elements such as a goat-sacrificing cult, the 2010 explosion at the St Louis Arch, and what appears to be the reappearance of the late Beryl Grace's missing daughter, now an adult.

It's been several months now since our friends over at Buzzfeed Unsolved released an episode on Percy Jackson, which immediately spurred amateur investigators on Twitter into action. At the time the episode aired, Percy Jackson's current whereabouts were unknown. Today Buzzfeed is happy to report that Percy Jackson is indeed alive. Out of respect for his privacy we will not share his location, but he graduated from college last year and seems to be doing well. We reached out to Twitter users @mattychase and @bobbyyyyy, who claim to have a close relationship with Jackson. Their responses here. (Note: as both of these users are minors, we did ask and receive permission from their parents before publishing.)
Although Jackson himself declined to comment, we were able to verify his identity. The odd occurrences in his life will have to remain a mystery... on which, of course, we will be happy to speculate.

Netflix Cancels Planned #thatjacksonkid Movie After Backlash; Announces Limited Series with Similar Concept
Earlier this year, Netflix announced a potential movie or tv series based on Percy Jackson and the two weeks he was missing (possibly due to cult involvement) in 2010. Public outcry against this move cited concerns of "profiting off of childrens' trauma." Yesterday Netflix quietly withdrew this '#thatjacksonkid' from their list of upcoming projects.
When questioned about the change, Netflix gave this statement: "When we proposed our idea for a #thatjacksonkid movie, our intent was never to cause harm. We planned to shed some light on the events of summer 2010 in a way that would be not only accurate, but respectful and perhaps even therapeutic for the people involved. After speaking with some of those people, we have come to the conclusion that such a project would do more harm than good. To respect their wishes, we will not move forward with our #thatjacksonkid project."
Only a few hours after officially cancelling #thatjacksonkid, Netflix announced the beginnings of a new limited series. According to their synopsis, this series will focus on a group of four teenagers who are kidnapped by and inducted into a cult. There are rumors that the story will even feature an explosion at the Hoover Dam, possibly in reference to the 2010 incident at the St Louis Arch. Early reports claim Netflix is eyeing Hollywood superstar Tristan McLean to play the cult leader.
