Chapter 1: Construction Work

Chapter Text

If you asked Tony, he would have said he was designing a new suit. If you asked why his eyes were closed he would have said to help him concentrate and if you mentioned his snores he would have turned his back and ignored you.

Because he wasn't sleeping. Tony Stark doesn't fall asleep in a chair watching TV like some kind of…… like some kind of dad.

Anyway, whatever was happening, Tony found himself with his eyes closed, sitting on his sofa, with a shadow running rampage round the outside of his building.

He first noticed it when a thud outside forced him out of his sleep designing and caused him to jump to his feet, looking round wildly.

But after looking in every corner and through every window and seeing nothing, Tony sat back down, just his imagination. Just reality and dreams his imagination mixing. Nothing to worry about.

When a second crash came 10 minutes later, from Peter's room no less, Tony responded by jumping to his feet and running to the aforementioned room, summoning a repulser as he went. Peter needed his room. He didn't need a random thing crashing into it at silly o'clock in the morning.

That's how Tony ended up in Peter's room, staring down at the crumpled spider kid, pointing a loaded repulser at him. What was his life.

“Peter? What are you doing here? Why aren't you at home?” Tony asked, confused.

He knew his confusion had filled his voice. Maybe mixed with a little smidge of panic. Peter rarely came over on nights he was at home and even then he ALWAYS called first. So maybe Tony was assuming something bad was happening. Something fishy was definitely happening anyway.

“Oh hey Tony!” Sorry I didn't mean to disturb you” Peter mumbled tiredly.

“Don't worry about it kid, but you haven't answered any of my questions” Tony replied, bending down and sitting next to Peter. Now he looked at him properly, he could see Peter looked exhausted, like he had barely slept all week.

He did a mental check, Peter was last at his on Friday, 4 days ago. So what had happened?

“Oh yeah…. What were your questions again?” Peter said, practically falling asleep where he sat.

Tony thought for a moment. It couldn’t be anything too dangerous or urgent or else Peter wouldn't be falling asleep. So it could probably wait until morning.

“Don't worry Peter. Tell me in the morning. For now, let's get you to bed”

Peter nodded in response and, without taking off his Spiderman suit, crawled to his bed.

“Pete?” Tony started “do you want to put on your pyjamas first?”

Peter made a grunt of agreement and, somehow, managed to release his suit. He had his PJ's on underneath so he just wiggled out of the suit and into his covers. As soon as his head hit the pillow (as cliché as this sounds) he was asleep.

Sure that Peter was fine, just tired, Tony wandered to his own room and followed Peter's example in going to bed.

He next morning, Tony dragged himself out if bed and headed down to the kitchen for coffee and breakfast. He noticed that Peter still wasn't awake which, after seeing him last night, didn't surprise him.

He decided that be would just go to his lab and design the new stark phone and probably stay there until Peter woke up. The most important part of his plan was the 'let Peter sleep until he wakes up’ part. He was not going to disturb him after seeing Peter practically delirious with tiredness just a few hours before.

It was almost lunch time before Peter emerged. Tony was in the kitchen cooking when Peter, wiping sleep from his eyes, shuffled into the room and plopped down on one of the kitchen stools.

“G'mor” he muttered still half asleep “wha am I do'g h're?”

Tony laughed as he watched Peer wake up slowly. He saw Peter's waking brain catch up with his mouth and saw what he assumed where last night's memories register.

“Oh” Peter said simply “sorry for invading last night.”

Tony smiled and dumped lunch onto two plates, sliding one of them towards Peter.

“Yeah, about that.” Tony started “why did you come here?”

Tony hoped that now Peter was more rested than last night, he would finally tell him what had happened.

“Right.” Peter said “there is a road being worked on a few blocks from our apartment.”

Tony waited and when Peter said nothing more prompted him with “and?”

Peter sighed deeply “and because of my hearing it sounds like it's right next to me. I can't sleep because it is too loud. Last night I was so tired I just swung over here. I thought it was a dream until I realised woke up here.”

Tony nodded. It did make sense that Peter's senses would make that a problem. He started thinking through ways to help when Peter, mistaking his silence for anger, quickly said “it's ok, I'll survive. I'm sure I'll manage to sleep eventually.”

Tony choked on the mouthful of food he was eating at that moment. “What!” He spluttered staring across the table “no! Your sleeping here until the work is finished or we figure out a way to block the noise!”

Peter looked slightly shocked “really?”

“Of course! You can't just not sleep!” Tony replied. The way Peter ducked his head suggested that that had been his plan. “Peter!” He said exasperated.

“Sorry.” Peter said “I didn't want to impose!” Peter quickly taking another bite of his food so he didn't have to say anything more.

“Peter!” Tony said sternly “you never 'impose’! I love having you here! You are always welcome! Okay?”

Peter quickly nodded his head “okay!” Tony couldn't help but notice that he sounded like he was only agreeing to please Tony.

He would have to make sure to show Peter that he really is welcome any time.

A week later, Tony and Peter had designed, made and tested some spider, soundproof ear plugs.

“See Peter!” Tony said “next time you have a problem, just come to me and we will make a solution. Okay?”

Peter nodded happily “Okay!”
