Chapter Text
Honestly, Katsuki is kind of impressed that nobody has noticed something is up from the start. When Aizawa refers to Midoriya exclusively as “problem child” nobody gives it much thought. A few teases go around the classroom, some “what did you do now”s from his friends, but nobody questions it further. Once the bell rings and everyone starts leaving for lunch, Aizawa gives the class a second hint.
“Bakugou. Problem Child. Stay, I have your new cards.” he tells them in his usual monotone without looking up from where he’s lying on the floor in his sleeping bag.
That raises a few curiosities, but not many. Maybe if he had given no explanation people may have wondered if they had gotten into another fight, but then again, their relationship has only been getting better since their first year, so maybe not. When Katsuki sits down with the self-appointed “Baku squad” (minus Jirou), ten minutes later in the cafeteria, Kirishima is the only one to even remember.
“You got a new student id?”
For a moment Katsuki stares at him, frowning, and internally wonders how much he can say without giving everything away or having to lie. He never lies, it’s not hero like. It’s not as if they're hiding it, per se, but he isn't trying to spell it out for them either. The whole point is for them to figure it out by themselves. That’s what Aizawa is getting out of this, after all.
“No.” he denies and resumes eating, trying to leave it at that, but Kirishima keeps looking at him as if expecting him to continue. “I’m changing rooms.” Now he has the attention of the other four idiots.
“What. Why?” asks Mina, turning away from her conversation with Sero.
“You can do that?”
“I didn’t ask to be moved.” he says. It's technically true. His mother is the one who asked, to humiliate him further probably.
“Where?” asks Mina again, already planning to ruin his peace and quiet. Katsuki narrows his eyes.
“The second floor’s right wing was empty. Shut up and eat.” he states simply, refusing to go into more detail. He hopes to get at least a solid week of tranquility before those morons figure out exactly which is his door.
“But that’s the girl’s wing!!” jumps Kaminari.
“Bakubro, you gotta show us! You’re gonna show us, right?!” says Kirishima, eyes sparkling with bro-ness.
“Absolutely dude, we gotta play Mario Kart there!” adds Sero.
“You morons are not getting in there.” Katsuki reprimands, ignoring their repeated protests and trying his best not to get them kicked out of the cafeteria. “You keep that shit set up where it is in the common room, there’s more space there anyway. And like I said, there’s no girls there Dunce Face, it’s empty. Why don’t you fuckers congregate in Racoon Eye’s room for that matter, hah?” he’s met with a pouting Kirishima and three determined idiots, already plotting their infiltration into his room.
“Aren’t you gonna need like, help to move all your stuff?” wonders Mina with fake helpfulness.
“No. My parents already did it this morning while we were in class. Now shut the fuck up and eat.” he says, failing to mention that he’s gained a third parent over the summer break.
“Aw, man…” laments Sero.
“You’re such a sourpuss Bakubro.” pouts Kaminari.
After a bit of complaining, the conversation shifts back to what each of them had done over the summer break. Which is stupid since they’d been spamming each other with vacation fotos on their group chat since day one. All of them except Katsuki, of course, who claims they are all idiots and to stop spamming his phone with their uggly faces. And so what if he hasn’t gotten rid of all of them? Knowing their luck they might go missing tomorrow and he'll need something to put in their wanted posters. It’s not like he enjoys their company or anything.
Now, Midnight calling Izuku “problem child” as they pass her on the hallway could just be her jumping on the Aizawa train for funsies, so Uraraka just giggles a little, making him go red, but the rest of his squad remains unbothered.
Present Mic does it all through English class, but this can apparently be excused as “spending too much time with Aizawa-sensei” as Uraraka puts it, or as being “married and raising a child with him” as Todoroki insists. Nevertheless, everyone gets the feeling that the teachers are playing some kind of prank on poor Izuku. But at least that's better than finding out he’d been in another incident that could grant him the title of “problem child”, so his friends don't worry about it, and just laugh goodnaturedly.
It is all well and good as class 3-A makes their way to the dorms after classes and disperse into the common room to laze around or do homework. Katsuki makes it a point to sit down on the floor, back against Izuku’s knees, who’s on the sofas chatting with the “Deku squad”, and starts doing homework on the coffee table. The rest of the Baku squad (again sans Jirou) realizes what he's doing and hurries to sit down around the table, not wanting to miss the opportunity. Their two squads overlap seamlessly, and it gives Izuku a warm fuzzy feeling, knowing they can have this.
“What, now?!” complains Sero.
“Bakubro, we literally just came back!” whines Kirishima, leaning on the armrest of Uraraka’s loveseat.
“And I’m not doing it again to help you dipshits afterwards.” Katsuki knows his only opportunity to disappear into his new room unfollowed is to engage his friends with something else so they have their hands too full to try and go after him when he leaves.
“Man, fuck Aizawa honestly. It’s day one and I already feel like I’m failing.” complains Kaminari, but dutifully sits down at Todoroki’s feet, right next to Katsuki in his rightful “biggest idiot” spot.
“Aww, should we call Jirou?” pauses Mina on her way to sit below Tsuyu.
“Nah, leave her with her girlfriend.” teases Kaminari, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
“Oh, they finally got together?” asks Izuku, turning away from his own squad’s conversation about Mt. Lady’s latest TV appearance.
“I knew it.” deadpans Todoroki, turning to Uraraka.
“What, no, you’re joking right? Kirishima-kun please tell me he’s joking!” Uraraka begs.
“Oh, they’re together alright!” smiles Kirishima, wiggling his eyebrows to match Kaminari.
“Together and all mushy and disgusting on their honeymoon stage too.” says Sero, fake gagging.
“Noooooo!!” whines Uraraka dramatically draping herself over Asui’s lap.
“You can’t back away now Ochaco-san. You have to pay up.”
"Tsuyu ! Don’t betray me like this!"
“I have to be with her on this one Uraraka-san. Although I disapprove of betting games, a hero always keeps their word.” backs Iida.
“Oh honey!” exclaims Mina, ever the drama lover “I warned you not to bet against it!”
“Can you dipshits shut up and pay attention? Ears can ask Ponytail for help later, but your dumbasses are gonna be screwed if you don’t focus right now.” chastises Katsuki, to an answering corus of “yes, mom.”.
Izuku giggles, but finds it wise to help their study efforts by asking Uraraka about her vacation at her grandmother’s house so she can drop the other subject. Todoroki isn’t going to make her pay anyways, he’s satisfied enough knowing he’s right. Half an hour later, Izuku gets up to reheat the gyoza his mum had left in the dorm’s kitchen when she had been there in the morning to move his things to his new room.
“Oh wow.” he exclaims upon opening the fridge to find what he estimates are thousands of gyoza.
“Hey Midoriya!” says Hagakure, entering the kitchen. “Oh wow, that’s a lot.”
“Yeah, uh, my mum made gyoza for everyone so…” she had said there would be enough for everyone but, well, there might be enough for everyone for a week.
“How nice of her! Tokoyami and I are on dinner duty today so let us heat it up for everyone!” says Hagakure, probably smiling although Izuku can’t be sure.
“Oh, that’s fine, I can help if that’s okay. It’s kind of a lot.” he offers.
In the end, Tokoyami and Hagakure do most of the work, with Izuku delegated to just handing everyone dishes and chopsticks, and putting sauce bowls on each table.
“Woah, Deku-kun!” exclaims Uraraka when he put two plates in front of Katsuki and Kaminari. “Those look delicious!”
“Yeah dude, what the heck, thanks!” beams Kaminari.
“My mum made them. She made enough for everyone so Hagakure and Tokoyami are reheating them.” he explains bashfully. The Bakusquad plus Uraraka and minus Katsuki cheer.
Once everyone has been served (Izuku spent more time getting thanked by everyone and explaining where the food had come from than actually serving), Izuku settles back in his seat behind Kacchan, who by this point is almost done eating, with his own food.
“These are great Deku-kun, kero.” praises Tsuyu.
“Yeah dude! Thank your mum for me, yeah?” says Kirishima.
“How many did she make?” asks Katsuki, looking around the room.
“I thought she had made too much, but Hagakure put six on each plate and now they’re gone.” answers Izuku, surprised himself.
“Holly fuck. And I thought the old hag spoiled us too much.” swears Katsuki.
“Thats…. 60… and… 120!” exclaims Kaminari after a moment.
“Good job Dunce Face, you're halfway to mastering third grade maths.” teases Katsuki goodnaturedly, although if anyone else had said it it would have felt like an insult. Kaminari pokes his tongue out at him. “Real mature.”
Izuku swears he can hear Katsuki smiling despite his reflection on the dark TV across the table telling him otherwise. Once everyone is done eating and Iida has taken most dishes back to the kitchen (except Kaminri’s, because he was trying and failing to do his homework too hard to actually eat) and went to his room to do his own homework, the Deku squad starts dissolving to do the same. Nobody notices Izuku packing away Katsuki’s school supplies into his backpack as the Baku squad finishes their homework. The four ‘morons’ are too exhausted to follow their reluctant leader when he swiftly leaves anyway.
