    “No better than a crazy fan.” You sighed. The barbs of the feather were so silky, and the color was gorgeously vibrant. Carefully, you toyed with the plume, stroking the vane and rubbing the soft fibers between your fingertips.

    “Maybe I should just toss it.” The feather tip skimmed the skin of your arm. “I don’t know why I picked it up in the first place.”

    The wind whipped sharply past your face, snatching the feather from your grasp, and a heavy thunk settled along the railing of your balcony. “I knew you had something of mine, baby bird.” Hawks crooned, jumping down and backing you into the sliding glass door for your apartment.
