Work Text:
You threw an ender pearl to another island and waited for it to land. When it teleported you to a side of a block. You started to fall into the void then you paused your game. You tried to think of anything that can get you out of the void but eventually thought of nothing. You clicked “Back to Game” and watched as your character eventually died. You clicked “Respawn” and quit the game, shutting down your computer as well.
You were annoyed and sad at the same time. It wasn’t the first time you died in that world but this was one of the first times you lost all of your stuff, including so many levels that you had.
You went to your bed and slumped yourself face down. You didn’t feel like crying. You’d cry if you lost your hardcore world, but you were just playing in your server with Kenma, which was on hard mode but not hardcore.
It’s where you guys play when Kenma would stream on his alt account. You both just started the server on a whim. Kenma made it so it would run on his other computer and you guys could play anytime you wanted.
Though it was rare that you guys would play a game together, as you had different tastes and Kenma was way more well-rounded due to his job, Minecraft was one of those games that you two would play together.
You opened your phone and scrolled through social media. Opening and closing apps as you didn’t find anything interesting. You clicked on a YouTube video, only to close it a few seconds in. You debated turning on your computer and opening up Minecraft again, but you knew that you’d just get annoyed trying to grind for stuff again. Then you thought of other games but honestly, you weren’t in the mood. You weren’t in the mood to do anything anymore, whether watch or play something.
You closed your phone and wrapped yourself in your blanket, then unwrapped yourself as you got hot. You kept sighing and eventually stuffed your face into a pillow and let out a scream of frustration.
You sighed again and looked at the ceiling. You refuse to go on like this. You can’t waste this precious weekend where you don’t have work or don’t even have any errands to run.
So, you went to Kenma’s office. You knew that he’d been editing a vod of his stream and turning it into a YouTube video and didn’t mind if you came in to bother him for a bit.
You opened his door, not choosing to knock as he probably wouldn’t even have heard you if you did, as he probably had his headphones on. Though you were half wrong.
He did have his headphones on, but only on one ear. The other one was moved slightly, so it didn’t cover his ear. He heard his door open and turned to look at you.
“What’s up?” he asked you.
“Kenmaaaa..” you answered him, moving forward to grab Kenma in a hug. You wrapped your arms around his neck and let out a big sigh. Kenma reciprocated and wrapped his arms around you as well.
You felt the heat radiating from Kenma and you nuzzled your head against his temple. He moved to stroke your head as you sank further into him.
“I died Kenma..” you started and relayed what had happened in your game. He listened intently and hummed at certain parts. He continued to stroke your head while you were telling the story.
Once you were done you moved back a bit and released him from your hug. “Sorry Kenma, I hope I didn’t interrupt anything,” you told him.
“No, no it’s fine, I was just finishing up some stuff. Actually, I think I’m mostly done now, I just need to re-watch the video, make some final adjustments, and export it,” he answered you.
“Oh okay, is it okay if I watch with you?” you ask him instead.
“Yea, sure it’s fine.”
And so you pulled a chair next to his. He plugged in his speakers instead so you could also listen to the video. The video was about a new game that was released. You knew that his audience basically begged him to review the new game.
Kenma eventually gave in and reviewed it on stream. You were familiar with the name of the game, as he had told you a bit about it from telling you during dinner, a couple of days ago.
He got a 15-minute video out of it. It was just mostly him playing through the beginning and comparing it to other similar games. He talked about the overall gameplay and his thoughts about the game from time to time. He also answered some text-to-speech donations and questions in chat.
It cut to his outro and end card. “What did you think?” Kenma asked you. You said your honest opinions about it, knowing that Kenma is overly critical of his videos since he only uploaded rarely and preferred to stream, as he didn’t like editing his videos.
You once told him that he should get an editor so he would have a consistent upload schedule, and he did try to find a suitable editor but none so far of those that sent in applications have been to his liking in terms of style.
“Okay, okay,” he answered you after you’ve given your own opinions. He started to edit the parts you’ve pointed out.
You helped guide him through the parts you said and he also gave his opinion. With you both reaching a middle ground, he edits the part accordingly. You continued with this pattern until you got through all of it.
You guys rewatched it again and deemed it okay for upload.
Kenma went to the YouTube studio. He put in the thumbnail he made earlier and put in a title. Checked the other necessary settings. He pasted his usual description and added a bit to the top of the text and talked about what he did in the video. And he finally started the upload for the video.
“Where’d you want to eat for dinner?” you asked him, as you were getting quite hungry.
“Can we just order out tonight?” he asked you.
“Yeah sure, sure, what are we going to order?” you asked him.
Kenma opened up his phone and went up a food delivery service app. You guys scrolled through all of your nearby options and settled on a fried chicken place, feeling like you needed the comfort food.
The video finished uploading and so Kenma put his monitors on sleep.
You guys moved to the living room and turned on the TV to watch some Netflix while you ate your food. You put on a series Kenma and you were trying to finish. You both settled down on the sofa and watched in comfortable silence.
Eventually, you heard the doorbell and went to get the food. You put the food on the table and paused the show, much to Kenma’s annoyance, telling you that it was on a good part. You ushered him to the kitchen sink so you could wash your hands and you can both eat.
You went back to the living room and opened the package and ate while watching the series, when Kenma suddenly spoke up, “I’m streaming on the alt tonight, I’ll help you get back the items you lost.”
