The Eye of the Beholder

Summary:

In a forgotten castle, long hidden by time, lives a beast. Stay away, the children are begged in their beds. For he has fur as black as night, the men mutter into half empty beer steins. Eyes as cruel as winter, the women whisper by the wells. And to those who enter, the warnings end, may God have mercy on their souls.

I told myself I wasn't gonna write for DSMP and here we are! Anyway, this is inspired by @/the-amber-project on tumblr!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“I’ve told you already, Schlatt. Our engagement has ended. Leave, now.” He managed to keep his voice steady, though not as loud as he would have liked. He hated how weak Schlatt made him feel. How powerless.

“Don’t be like that, Sugar Plum.” Schlatt rose onto the first step, and Alex’s breath caught in his chest. “We can talk about this. You don’t want to let this, to let me go.” Another step, and the Lord forced himself to exhale.

“Yes, I do.” Alex stood, the height difference now negligible as they stand on uneven footing. “I want you out of my home. Out of my life. I want you to occupy no space in my mind or heart. And the first step is for you to get out of my sight.”

The cocky grin falling off of the Lord's ex-lover's face made pride swell in his chest. It was quickly stomped on as Schlatt ascended the final step, towering over Alex. His hands were rough as he cupped the Lord's face, but the gesture sweet. It took everything in him not to lean into the familiar feeling. If he closed his eyes, he could pretend, just for a moment, that Schlatt cared about him. That he wasn't using him for his crown or his bed.

"Darling, don't do this. You know I love you." His voice velvety smooth as it reached Alex's ears, but he knew better. He rolled his shoulders, the spell Schlatt attempted falling flat, thanks to Foolish's own protections.

"Get out. Before I make you."

"And just how will you do that, hmm?" Alex's hands balled into fists as Schlatt's pointer finger raised his chin to look him in the eyes.

"Fuck you, Schlatt." The Lord spat, before looking past the taller man. "Guards!"

The look of shock on Schlatt's face as the doors burst open will forever be ingrained in Alex's mind. "Remove him. And never let him return."

For some reason, Alex's chest is tight as the guards drag his ex-fiancé out of his throne room, his home, and his life.
