Friends with a Monster

Summary:

Kaminari sees the good in people at the worst of times, his friends like to tell him.

Bakugo Katsuki is interesting, at the very least. So what if Kaminari wants to be friends with him?

After Bakugo's information gets leaked, no one seems to agree. In the midst of all the confusion Kaminari gets roped in all the drama and chaos that ensues.

Or

Class 1A fanfic trope where peeps hate on Bakugo except the author tried to do something by developing characters and try to make things make sense but instead got fluff angst and crack blehhh

WARNING:
Because of the chapter ten(skippable), the rating has gone up. After reading chapter ten, lemme know if I need to add any more archive warnings cause I'm new to the dark stuff.

Update:
FWAM is off hiatus! Updates will proceed regularly!

Notes:

Please don't hate me for this. I just wanted to express how much I hate it when people shit on a character and ignore the development in favor of having someone to shit on.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Yuuei was the complete dream for any hero student. It was the top school, the alma mater of the number one hero. Being accepted was the perfect start for anyone's future career.

When the morning of the entrance exam arrived, Kaminari was ecstatic. Not only was he going to get the opportunity to attend a national level school, but he would be able to meet several new people! Hopefully, some of his future classmates, too, should he get accepted.

He rushed through his breakfast and gave his mom a quick hug before hurrying out the door. He skipped down the street and swung around some poles as many Barbie movie protagonists tend to do. Sue him for being so happy.

Once the gates of U.A. came into view, a bubbly excitement filled Kaminari's heart. It was the U.A. Academy he was about to step into!

As Kaminari took in the place, he heard a huff from behind him. A blonde guy said something to cause another guy with green hair to jump and move out of his way. Kaminari 'tsked' at him. He seemed like a jerk.

The guy lightly shoved Kaminari aside and made his way into the building. Kaminari was mildly surprised that he could be so gentle but aggressive at the same time. He was certainly an interesting guy.

The pretest meeting went by quicker than he expected. First was the written test, which by self-grading, Kaminari was sure he barely passed thanks to the English portion. Thank goodness for his American dad.

The next part of the meeting was a general overview of the practical exam led by Present Mic. While Kaminari did pay attention to most of it, his attention drifted and he noticed the blonde talking quietly with the green haired boy. The blonde huffed something and turned back to the meeting.

'So, are they friends?' Kaminari thought before shaking his head and zoning back in to the meeting.

Four mock villains. That was scary in itself, but Kaminari had a bad feeling there was more to the test. The sizes for these villains were never mentioned, Kaminari noted, so the four-pointer could be at least a hundred feet tall!

Whatever the twist was, Kaminari ended up on the same bus as the blonde. He looked oddly calm despite his firey persona. If anything, it looked like he was trying to concentrate. Kaminari took inspiration and tried to make himself focus.

There was no count down for the test. When Midnight screamed to start, most people didn't move. Kaminari saw the blonde run into the fake city, so instinctively, he followed. It was a good thing he did because almost immediately after, a stampede of students raced in.

Almost instantly a swarm of robots came out of nowhere. Kaminari skid under one of them and tapped his fingers on the back port which he assumed powered them up. He let out a shock only big enough to fry the robot's sensors.

Kaminari repeated this with a couple other robots. He wasn't sure how many points they were worth since he only memorized the zero-pointer in order to avoid it. It was odd how he hadn't run into any yet.

Another robot came into view and Kaminari prepared to fight it. Before he could reach it, however, the blonde from earlier quite literally blasted from a building and blew the thing to bits. A piece of shrapnel flew towards another examinee.

"Shit," the blonde yelled. Kaminari acted on impulse and pulled the guy out of the way. The metal flew past his head and crashed into a building.

"I don't think I can do this," the guy mumbled in a shaky voice. Kaminari racked his brain for something to say and looked around.

"Um, there's an exit over there for people who want to resign," Kaminari worded carefully. He pointed at the exit and pat the guy's shoulder, "Do you want me to walk you there?"

"I think I can make it," The guy nodded to himself. He bowed to Kaminari, "Thank you."

With that, the guy left. Kaminari took a second to collect his thoughts and ran to the main road in search of more robots.

The main road was crowded. To anyone at a disadvantage at this point, it would have been overwhelming. Well, it was still overwhelming for Kaminari!

Kaminari was lucky enough to find a robot or two, but he noticed that the blonde was stealing the robots and taking them out like flies. It was hard to find any that weren't being fought over. Even then, Kaminari had to be a jerk and attack one someone else was working on.

A rumbling interrupted everyone's movements. From the end of the main road, a giant robot emerged from behind a building. If there weren't so many people around, Kaminari might have shit his pants.

Screaming started and everyone ran towards the exit. From far away, Kaminari could clearly see it had been closed.

'Shit, so if it's closed, people may get trampled,' Kaminari thought. Another more sickening thought entered his head. 'What if the robot follows them and crushes someone by mistake?'

It wasn't even just a thought. Kaminari heard a howl of pain and saw a girl getting trampled by the other testers. The robot made its way closer. Kaminari felt at a loss. There was no way he'd have time to save her without the robot catching up. Carrying someone was no easy feat.

An idea suddenly entered his head. The blonde was still attacking the robots without a care in the world and seemed the most competent to help.

"Hey!" Kaminari yelled. The blonde glanced over his shoulder. Granted, he was glaring, but it was more than Kaminari could ask for at the moment. "I need to help her! Can you take care of the big guy?"

The blonde looked at the zero-pointer and smirked. He wiped sweat off his forehead and charged.

Kaminari focused on picking up the girl. She had a limp and from the looks of it, the crowd badly twisted her ankle. He swung her arm over his shoulder and tried pulling her forward.

"Can you put any weight on it?" Kaminari asked as he remembered seeing in a book he'd read long ago. The girl shook her head. Kaminari grit his teeth. He knew he wasn't very strong, but he needed to get her out of here.

Kaminari squatted down and motioned for her to get on his back. She fortunately complied and let him hoist her up by her thighs. She wrapped her arms around his neck and Kaminari stood up. He raced toward the exit without another second to waste. He could hear explosions in the back and figured the blonde was taking care of the robot. It was relieving, to say the least.

Kaninari didn't even make it to the exit when Midnight yelled that the test had ended. Kaminari stopped and turned to see the damage. He wasn't entirely surprised to see the zero-pointer defeated, but it was still impressive. The guy wiped sweat off his forehead and stomped toward the exit.

He didn't get to leave when Recovery Girl made an appearance. She looked at the blonde's hands and shook her head. She scolded him for apparently going too hard on himself and kissed his hands, much to the surprise of many who were not familiar with her. The blonde's hands healed instantly and he muttered a quick, disgruntled, "Thank you."

Recovery Girl then went up to Kaminari. She looked at the girl's ankle and shook her head disapprovingly. She shook her cane around and pointed at the other testers.

"For a lot who want to be heroes, you sure couldn't be bothered about each other's safety, could you?" She scolded. Some looked down in shame. Recover Girl healed the girl and helped her off of Kaminari's back.

"You are a helpful young man," Recover Girl praised. She tossed a gummy at the back of the blonde boy's head, "You are, too!"

The blonde 'tsked' and shrugged. Kaminari had a feeling he only helped to get a feel for combat, but who was he to judge? In the end, it was that guy who bought him time.

Kaminari quickly grabbed his things from the locker room, noting that the blonde did the same. They walked out almost at the exact same time, much to Kaminari's amusement. He didn't get to say anything, though, because they ran into the girl from the fake city.

"Thank you so much for helping me back there," The girl bowed. "If it wasn't for you two, who knows what would have happened."

The blonde pulled her head back up. She looked at him, confused.

"Don't thank us," The blonde grunted, "It was a hero's exam. Anyone who wants to be a hero would have the sense to do the same."

The girl sputtered into a blushing mess before she ran off. Even Kaminari's bisexual ass found it somewhat hot how cool that sounded. Once again, the blonde walked away without another word.

"Wait!" Kaminari found himself saying. The blonde stopped for only a moment, "Can I know your name?"

The blonde smirked. He tilted his head in a cocky manner and spat in a chilling voice, "I'll tell you if we end up in the same class."

Notes:

If you don't like Bakugo, this could or.could not be the story for you. Read the tags I guess. If you absolutely hate him, why are you here?

Anyway, this is going to be my take on the whole "uwu i'm 11 and hate bakugo so class 1A should discriminate him" except I don't like that. I think his character development is deserving of respect. He won't be idolized, but he is going to be respected somewhat.
