With Which We Paint Our Faces

Summary:

You were many things. Patient, waiting until the enemy grew restless, tired of waiting, and stepped unknowingly onto the death-row of your crosshairs; careful, leaving no trace behind, not the scuff of an unplanned struggle nor the pin-prick trace of your blood; most of all, precise, not a hair-breadth off or an exhale too late, always dead-set on your target, always focused, always willing to give a little to get.

You were many things.

You were not merciful.

But as your finger coiled against the trigger like a cobra ready to strike, a thin sheen of glass between you and Jung Hoseok's wide, devilish smile, you found you could not take the shot.

Or,

You've just found yourself in the middle of a very, very personal war, and Bangtan wants you dead.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Summary:

An introduction to the Hybrid Universe and the people within it.

Notes:

Welcome to With Which We Paint Our Faces! It's an honour to have you here, and I hope you enjoy it. This is an intense fic, and I mean that less in terms of content and more in terms of craft and worldbuilding. This story will take its sweet time. Lies run rampant, motivations twist and morality warps, past deeds haunt. It's not of the mainstream mafia genre you've likely come to read, (well, obviously, most of these guys are part animal), nor are the relationships tagged above fast-paced. It's a slow burn, and implements that pacing throughout.

Any constructive criticism is appreciated. Trigger warnings will be at the start of each chapter. Excuse the cheesy-ass moodboards, I couldn't help myself.

DISCLAIMER:
This story does not, in any way, represent the characters' real-life counterparts, nor is it intended to. It is a fantasy/sci-fi story written for fun. The morals and actions presented here are therefore no reflection of anything real-life.
And this goes without saying, but do not post this fic on social media or tag these people in it.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

GENERAL NOTES

Top 7, Top 5 and related terms refer to the top members or those with the most power in the group. They directly manage affairs in certain lines (assigned by area of expertise) and either answer to the select few above them or no one at all; sometimes, their only superior is the Head, or boss, of the group. Although uncommon, some clans have top members, but no Head.

Crime groups can be called by many names, the most common being clans, gangs, factions, mobs or mafia. The higher-class groups avoid calling themselves gangs, as it implies lower class or disorganization. Instead, they use either ‘mafia’ or ‘clan’, both of which are considered more civilized and family-oriented. They operate in what is called the underground or underworld.

A ‘kkangpae’ refers to your usual street-level gangster or overenthusiastic neighbourhood kid and would be an insult to a higher-class member. It is often used as one.

KEY PLAYERS

       Bangtan

One of the biggest and most feared South Korean mafia. It deals in various trades, such as arms trafficking, medical supplies, drugs, exotics, and information, however many forms that may take. Few match its influence and most of its members remain secret; although they are known to dabble in the underworld, it is mostly unknown who they affiliate with. The only known high members are Park Jimin and Jeon Jungkook, but many are unsure of their status within the group, and few dare to get too close.

Bangtan is the only elite mafia that does not deal in hybrid/human trafficking.

       The Triad

A relatively new clan, the Triad has become a terror to the underworld and lies nearly unmatched in ruthlessness and effectiveness. It deals in similar trades to Bangtan with the addition of hybrid/human trafficking (mainly prisoners/ransoms), hits, and mercenary work. Its services are always in high demand. Although lacking much of the code Bangtan upholds, the Triad is known for its unusual "passiveness". No other clan has its level of patience or willingness to wait out an opponent, often starving them underneath in place of outright war. It is also known as the most secretive clan in South Korea.

No one knows the top members’ names.

Murphy Aekis | (You)

Current Name: Anubis

Status: Head

Hybrid Type: Unknown

Aekis, known in the underground as Anubis, manages the Triad and all final decisions. Few have ever seen her face and her name alone holds both great reverence and thoroughly-earned terror. Her reputation extends, not only through mental destruction as with Seojung, but also physical.

Note: Although Anubis has had many names in the past, Aekis is her current one.

Kim Seojung

Current Name: Silver Lily

Status: Top 5

Hybrid Type: Domestic Cat

While Seojung, better known as the Silver Lily, might seem delicate, it is often a ploy to take people apart from the inside. Other than this tactic, because of her background, not much is known about her.

Hak Jehun

Current Name: Hound

Status: Top 5

Hybrid Type: Coyote

*See Hak Jihoon for more details.

Hak Jihoon

Current Name: Hound

Status: Top 5

Hybrid Type: Coyote

Twins with Jehun, Jihoon shares his code name, wreaking havoc and confusion on opposing clans. The Hound, not known to be two people, is a cunning force to the point where foreign gangs have nicknamed them Loki, and the locals call them Seokga.

Takahashi Kairi

Current Name: Mermaid

Status: Top 5

Hybrid Type: Moon Nishikigoi (Moon Koi)

Kairi, mostly known as the elusive Mermaid, incites fear wherever she goes. Her torture tactics incoorporate water in whichever way is cruellest, and she rarely fails to deliver information. While her services are coveted, few are bold enough to commission her.

Hybrids

Because animals and humans are not fully compatible, hybrids have limited animal features. These include hair and eye colour, height, facial differences, physiological advantages (such as strength, speed, heightened senses and metabolism), and mental differences that mean a hybrid can endure more pain, be more receptive to fear, and so on, depending on the animal type. Due to health risks, the majority of hybrids are mammalian. Canines and felines are the most common ― dogs and domestic cats ― but there are also wild strains.

However, newer hybrid designs include features such as animal ears and tails, making them easier to distinguish from humans. As with most things, this revision had political undertones.

Not all hybrids are artificially designed. Some are natural hybrids ― humans who have inherited animal traits through mysterious means. These hybrids have ancient names and inhabit folklore, such as the White Wolves, Red Wraiths, Black Wraiths and Moon Nishikigoi. The Red and Black Wraiths are scarcest, as humanity deemed their powers a threat and attempted, almost successfully, to purge them from existence. White Wolves and Moon Nishikigoi are also rare but still have existing and highly-venerated bloodlines. Kim Namjoon and Takahashi Kairi are two individuals blessed with such blood and either feared or respected because of it.

Natural hybrids are to be shuddered before, as they walk like gods among mortals.

Due to being part animal, the law does not allow many rights to hybrids. They are deemed of a lower class than humans and therefore, made to serve. The standard hybrid mark is stamped on their wrist, depicting a company logo, animal type, and serial number. However, hybrids have tattoos elsewhere depending on the company, and they vary in size and obviousness.

Natural hybrids have more rights, but the government watches them carefully, and it’s safer to pose as a human. This comes with its risks, as it is illegal for a hybrid to masquerade as a human, and if discovered, will end with reconditioning or a more severe punishment. Overall, it is an issue most people avoid discussing in public.

While there is sympathy, there is also much hatred.

You might have noticed the reader has a set name. While "YN LN" will come into play later, for now, the reader will be called Aekis Murphy. She is also female, mixed race, and physically described.
