Tricking The Matrix

Summary:

Okay so maybe everything wasn’t fine- It wasn’t his fault his childhood friend told him to take a swan dive off of a roof. It wasn’t his fault that he got attacked by a villain on his way home, and it wasn’t his fault All Might came to save him. It wasn’t his fault that All Might was a quirkest piece of shit. And it most definitely was not his fault that he activated an (apparently) dormant quirk by trying to save said childhood friend.

//

Izuku was quirkless. Sure, he now has a quirk, but will that really change anything?

Notes:

Okay! Before this story even begins, i would like to say I did take inspiration and its not 100% a new thing. I’ve read an amazing fic (by alohaflower) that has basically this same idea (and I did ask for permission, dont worry)

And if you’re a fan of The Gamer (if im right its a webcomic?), sorry to say but this isn’t so much a crossover, and more of ‘inspiration struck, and the source im not that familiar with, but i know that basic premise’, if that makes any sense.

I hope you like this-

Enjoy~

(Edit; old chapters (1-16) will be reedited slowly, writers block killed my writing for a while, but i should be back to posting soon hopefully! This chapter was edited on 9/30/2023)

Chapter Text

Everything was completely fine. Today did not flip Izuku’s emotions over like pancakes over and over again. Yep- everything was completely fine.

These were all of Izuku’s thoughts as he sat down on his bed, staring at a blue-tinted screen with text saying,

[Welcome to ‘The Gamer’! So sorry for not coming in earlier, but I’m sure you understand!

New Quest:

‘Say Hello To Your Quirk!’

Requirements:

- Open the ‘Help and Knowledge’ menu

- Equip ‘The Gamer’ special ability

Rewards:

- 300 EXP Points

- 10 Stat Point(s)

- 1 Skill Tree Point(s)]

What is a person supposed to think about this?! ‘Yeah so you’ve been seen as quirkless for all your life, here have a quirk!’

He stared at the screen for a little longer.

Well, if this is really his quirk, then might as well try it out right? First things first- finding the menu. Video games had menu’s right? He tried to touch the little screen, but that did nothing. He didn’t know a lot about video games, but surely somehow he could use all this?

He thought for a second, trying to think of any ideas. Maybe using his voice? “Uhhhh- Menu?” Nothing happened, but he continued. “Open Menu.” Still nothing. “Okay well neither of those worked. How about, help and knowledge menu-” his muttering was cut off by a ping sound.

Another screen appeared over the first one, this one having a ‘Help and Knowledge’ title at the top of the screen. It also had a lot of text to read through.

[!Help and Knowledge!

Player Overview:

The player overview shows many things. It shows the name of the player, their age, the level of the player, their special ability, all stats, including the health (HP) bar, the stamina bar, and an area for effects to show up. (See: Effects And Their Meaning)

All of the stats are listed below, as well as a short explanation for each of them.

- Vitality (VIT), in basic, health. The higher the (VIT) stat, the bigger the Player’s health (HP) bar will be.

- Strength (STR), how strong the Player is. For example, a Player with a level 100 (STR) stat is able to bend Steel (Material) with ease.

- Dexterity (DEX), how easy it is for the Player to move/how flexible the player is. High leveled (DEX) stat Player’s are able to move like an experienced gymnast. Stamina will also drain at a slower rate if the (DEX) stat is high.

- Intelligence (INT), how much the Player to think, in a way. A high level of this stat allows the Player to have better memory, and is able to think through knowledge that is already known.

- Wisdom (WIS), similar to (INT), but how easy it is to think through a problem. Problems, puzzles, and simply understanding comes easier with a higher (WIS) level.

- Charisma (CHA), shows how persuasive the Player is. The higher the (CHA) stat is, the more likely people will listen or say yes to the Player.

Stats can be leveled up by either using a Stat Point, or by doing things that would require that stat. For example, to increase the (STR) stat, the Player could do some weight lifting.

To open this overview, simply say ‘POV’ out loud. (Short for ‘Player Overview’.)

The Skill Tree:

Where you can spend ‘Skill Tree Points’ to gain (as the name implies) different skills. All the skills are listed below. Certain skills appear depending on what level the player is at, what quest they complete, or if they meet a certain requirement. (Skill ‘Tree’ points aren’t put into ‘trees’ until unlocking magic related skills.)

- Observe

- Stealth/Sneak

- Cooking

- Native Language (speaking)

- Native Language (reading, writing)

- Mathematics/Sciences

To open the Skill Tree, simply say out loud, ‘Skills’.

Relationships:

This one’s simple. How different people see you, and their relationships with you. The better the relationship, the higher the number. If the number is a negative one, this means the relationship is not a healthy or good one. To see Relationships, say (out loud), ‘Relations’.

Quests:

Another simple one. Quests show up at certain times and situations. Quests pop up during these situations anyways, but to see all quests (completed or uncompleted) say (out loud), ‘Quests’.

Effects And Their Meanings:

There a couple of effects that the Player can have, all listed below along with an explanation for each one.

- Poison (PSN), this effect will show up when the Player is poisoned, and HP will slowly go down, eventually killing the Player if not cured.

- Burned (BUR), when the Player has gone near/been subjected to fire magic. HP will slowly go down with this effect, similarly to PSN, but it won’t last forever, and won’t kill.

- Blindness (BLN), when the Player has either complete blindness or low vision. Things like blizzards or sandstorms can cause this effect to appear.

- Frozen (FRO), when the Player is frozen to the point where it’s hard to move. The (DEX) stat is lowered when this effect appears. It goes back after the effect goes away.

- Paralyzed (PAR), when the Player is struck by some sort of shock (usually electric) strong enough to make them not be able to move. When the Player is able to move again, the effect goes away.

These effects will show up in the Player Overview if active.]

After reading the mountain of text, re-reading some parts to understand them better, he felt like he understood whatever his quirk was. Maybe. All of it was still confusing, but his mind was going crazy with all the new information.

He glanced back at the screen that had first opened, a ‘quest’, for him to equip the special ability, ‘The Gamer’. He skimmed the other text, even more confused but just started opening things up.

What on earth did it mean a ‘player overview’? He scrunched his nose a bit, but absently started talking to open it, only taking a slight pause of hesitation.

“Er- POV?”

A new screen showed up, showing his ‘player overview’. (Whatever that meant.)

[Midoriya Izuku | Age: 14 | Level 8

Special Ability: [None Equipped: Equip?]

HP: 85/90

VIT: Level 9 | STR: Level 5 | DEX: Level 10 | INT: Level 14 | WIS: Level 13 | CHA: Level 7

Stamina: 150/250 [Tired]

To exit: say ‘Exit’ out loud]

“Okay, um, special ability?” Well, he was going to look at the ‘quest’ bit, but apparently it was right here. Nothing happened for a good second.

“Is it not voice activated?...” his hand rose to his chin. Would it work at all? “soo it must be…” He pressed the ‘Special Abilities’ part of the player overview, which brought up another screen. This one was a smaller one, and more rectangular.

Pleasantly surprised at how easy his quirk (HIS QUIRK!!!) was to.. Access? Use? Whatever it was, he continued to read.

[Special Abilities:

‘The Gamer’: Boosts how fast a skill can be earned by 5%. Nothing really big or flashy, but is the beginning ability.]

He assumed that this was also touch activated, and he was right. As soon as he pressed ‘The Gamer’, it acted like a button, and gave a small cheer noise. He immediately quieted down though, he didn’t know if his mother was home yet, and he didn’t want to find out yet.

Now instead of the Special Ability having [None Equipped: Equip?] next to it, it had the words ‘The Gamer’.

Another screen appeared up, probably the quest being done, but Izuku didn’t really care at this point. He laid backwards on his bed (where the screens didn’t follow him, oddly), and felt his heart hurting by how fast it was beating. It had been a long day, and he was going to sleep, damn quirks and childhood best friends. Izuku slowly let his eyes close, and drifted off to his thoughts racing at the fact that he may have just gotten a quirk.

Notes:

Here is the link to the fic. (ik it might not be necessary, but like eh)

and here's a small note- i probably will have no schedule to this (bc i really am not a fan of those) but at the very least it'll have semi-regular updates. probably-

Bye~
