Chapter Text
It wasn't like Yeosang expected the other to keep his promise. At the time, he knew it was mostly just words to give San self reassurance, but still...deep down Yeosang hoped that the other would keep his word.
Reading the worn letter clutched in his hand one last time, Yeosang let his eyes linger on the final three words, the tears freezing on his frostbitten cheeks. He could hear San's voice whispering them lovingly in his ear, just like he did the day he left. It made the bitter winter night feel even more cold.
Yeosang wasn't even sure why he came back to their promised spot when he knew the other wouldn't show because why would he? He was happy now. Yeosang was nothing more than a distant memory.
365 days usually came and went quickly, but this time, each day felt like a dull, slow stab to the heart each time Yeosang woke to an empty bed. All his energy was drained every time he saw his letters were returned in the mail. His happiness was ripped away every time he had to watch the one he loved smile and hold someone else who held his heart now.
Yeosang wasn't perfect enough for San. He always knew this and yet he let the other's words persuade him otherwise. San never made him feel insignificant or insecure. That was part of the younger's charm. He could make anyone feel special even if they weren't.
Wiping away the few tears remaining on his cheeks, Yeosang stood from his spot in the snow. He didn't need a watch to know it was midnight, the loud parties and cheers from the city being more than enough of an indication that it was a new year.
Even after these 365 days he was made to wait, the omega knew he would never move on from the alpha. San had dug his claws in too deep, and Yeosang was left with the scars which would never fully heal.
"Kang Yeosang!" A familiar voice scolded as his friend emerged from the dark. "It's freezing out here. You're gonna get sick at this rate."
"I-I'll be f-fine." Yeosang assured quietly, letting his friend zip up his coat to the highest point.
"You're teeth are chattering." Wooyoung pointed out, removing his scarf and wrapping it around the older. "What are you even..." The younger's eyes softened as they landed on the letter in Yeosang's hand, the older quick to fold the letter into his coat pocket as Wooyoung sighed. "Yeosang, you can't...he's not coming back."
"I know, but-"
"You clearly don't know because you've been waiting out here all night for him to show up." Wooyoung argued sternly, Yeosang holding back more tears, his fingers still clutching the letter in his pocket. "Come on, let's get you home and warmed up. We can talk about this later."
Yeosang let himself be dragged away, wondering if San would show up once he was gone. What if they were just always missing each other? Would fate really be that cruel?
"When we get home, I want to see that letter." Wooyoung stated, not going to take "no" for an answer. "You can't keep holding onto him forever."
But he was all I had.
"He made his choice and it wasn't you."
Maybe it wasn't his choice to make?
"You need to move on, Yeosang. I'm concerned for you."
You shouldn't be.
"I just want you to be happy."
Why can't it be with him?
"You deserve better."
I don't deserve anyone if the one who deserves the world doesn't even want me.
