Even if it's just us, we'll be okay

Summary:

"Your wish is yours to keep."

Left in shambles after an unwanted revelation, Jay tries to pick up the pieces of his strained relationship with Nya and Cole. However, the release of a certain djinn only serves to make his life more difficult. Maybe the whole situation would be easier if his hand didn't keep landing in Cole's comforting grasp.

A rewrite of Lego Ninjago season 6, where Cole replaces Nya as the love interest.

WhaleKingdom (BadFeelin) is making a Podfic for this fic :D

The fic's finished now (and has literally fucking quadrupled in size somehow) so this note isn't really needed anymore, but I'll keep it in since it shows how much this fic's developed :D

THIS FANFIC IS TECHNICALLY FINISHED. I currently have a rough draft for the entire skybound season written out (it’s about 20,000 words if that matters to you). This rough draft includes the most important scenes which are already fully written out. The reason why I’m posting these chapters over a long period of time is that I’m trying to flush out the storyline and make the writing nicer to read. Because of this, it might take a while to finish entirely. The main point is that either way, you will get an ending to this fanfic. Even if I lose motivation, I’ll at least post the rough draft so there’s something to end the story with. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, but just in case, you don’t need to worry about half-finished fanfic that hasn’t been updated in 5 years.

I know of at least two fanfics that have a similar concept of “Ninjago re-write but with Jay and Cole instead of Jay and Nya” and I want to clarify that I had this concept before I found those fics, and the scenes in this fanfiction are uniquely my own. Our fanfictions are not related.

Since this fanfic is a re-write of Skybound, not all of the scenes were adjusted (especially in the first few chapters), so for a lot of scenes, I briefly mention what happened, but not in detail. As such I recommend you watch Skybound before reading this fic, just so you have a better idea of what happens in between the scenes I write and so the narrative doesn’t feel as jumpy.

Chapter 1: Prologue- Grave Digger

Chapter Text

“Wait a minute, why is it that I can’t see my reflection??”

Jay was back in those icy caves, his fingers numbing as he tried his best to bundle into his suit. Above the fibers, he saw a blurry reflection of his face, wrinkled by time and spilt with an eyepatch. He still remembers his awe at the mature and cool version of himself.

“Hey guys! Guess what. I get an AWESOME EYEPATCH-” his chuckles reverberate in the cave, and in his frostbitten bones as giddiness turns to confusion, “And there’s something else…”

It’s difficult to say if the shock ever really left. Jay was still analyzing every feature of the man who walked up to his reflection, who reached and held his hand, looking way too tenderly into his eyes.

Not man, he corrects himself, as he always does in this memory.

Cole.

The Bounty sways aggressively against the wind, throwing Jay into the wall and successfully waking him from his dream— or nightmare depending on who you ask.

He settles back into his bed with a groan, tightly wrapping himself in the sheets and blocking out the world. More than anything, he wants to block out that memory.

Even without the dream, he remembers telling the group that he only found the eye patch interesting, nothing more appearing in the reflection. He remembers particularly avoiding Cole’s eyes, knowing that Cole’s reflection was missing because it was too busy looking at Jay- holding Jay’s hand. Even later, he convinced Zane that it was Nya with him. There’s no way Jay would admit who was really standing next to him.

It was a random reflection anyway! It probably thought Jay was someone else. It probably mixed up Nya and Cole! They both have short black hair, it’s an easy mistake! Because Jay likes Nya, the girl who’s saved him on countless occasions and is strong and more courageous than Jay could ever be.

Jay doesn’t like Cole, not like that. Because Cole’s his best friend, who’s saved him on countless occasions… and is strong… and courageous… and makes Jay laugh like no one else… and-

Maybe it’s better if he just gets up early. His cocoon isn’t doing any good at ridding him of his intrusive, lying incorrect, thoughts.
