Chapter Text
You open your eyes. Immediately, you want to go to sleep again. There is a constant ache throughout your entire heavy and cumbersome body, but today it is especially concentrated in your neck and stomach. You shove your face back into the pillow.
“Sunny, we’re almost there okay? Can you stay awake long enough for me to order?”
Her voice sounds slightly distorted, and as you reluctantly lift your head to look at her you see a woman with a dial telephone head. You recognize some of her features from Black Space, but here she was, in color.
“They won’t have steak, but maybe you would like a hamburger?” The Telephone was blue with red keys. You have met many people. You can’t tell what expression this one was making, but her voice was usually cheerful, doting, and understanding. But maybe she couldn’t read your thoughts like your friends could…
You nod a bit.
“What else? Fries?”
You look over to the menu in the drive-thru, but Something is blocking it, and you look away before you can stare at it for long. You nod again, just letting the Telephone order for you as you find an interesting spot on the windshield to stare at. Something is moving slowly to the edge of your vision. You ignore it.
“-unny? Sunny, dear. Oh, nevermind, it’s okay. We can save it for later if you don’t drink it.” Telephone reached her own conclusion. You bury your face into the pillow again.
Before you can relax, Telephone is offering you food again. You take it and stare at the wrapped burger and the golden fries. You feel your injured stomach rumble, but you are not hungry. You’re not supposed to be hungry.
“I know you don’t like to eat very much, but could you at least eat half the hamburger and a few fries sweetie?” Telephone coaxed. Should you accept her request? Why not? Maybe she’ll give you more food in the future in case you have to do battle. You take a bite of the hamburger and chew, looking for Telephone for approval. The dial on her face spins. Was that an expression of excitement? You continue to eat. This hamburger felt like it was lacking… Cheese… you remembered someone liked cheese very much. Oh, right, Ems.
You drink the drink given to you. It was hard to drink through the straw, and very cold. It would have been nice if you had a blanket. It was easier to sleep if you were warming up under a blanket... You set it aside and picked up the red packet of fries. The fries were not crispy but they were warm. After mindlessly eating half, you offered the other half to Telephone.
“Do you want me to save this for later?” Telephone wondered. You shake your head, point at her, and somewhat impatiently mimic shoving the fries into your mouth. “Oh! Alright, I’ll take some.”
How was she eating her food? You watched her dial slot open and she tossed the fries inside. It closed and the dial spun clockwise, counterclockwise. It was slightly mesmerizing to watch.
“Do you want some chicken nuggets?”
Some nuggets in exchange for some measly fries? This quest was paying off already… You take the entire pack of chicken nuggets from her. It was warm. You put it on your lap, wrapped up the hamburger, put the pillow on top of it and hunch over to try to sleep again.
You might have heard a sigh from Telephone, but you didn’t think much of it, drowning out what she said. You were tired. The car rumbled back to life around you and took you away again. With food in your body, it was much easier to sleep…
