(Blue's POV)
I opened my eyes and saw that it was morning. I yawned and shook my head to wake myself up. I yawned again before looking down at my baby: "Beta" as my Alpha had called her: she was still sleeping, her body curled up under my left arm and her head resting against my chest. I cooed and nudged her, she let out a quiet whine and curled up tighter, clearly not wanting to wake up yet.
'Come on Beta, it's time to wake up.' I thought as I chittered at her, but she still didn't open her eyes. Luckily this isn't the first time that I've had this problem so I knew what to do. I moved my head close to her and forcefully exhaled against her underbelly causing her to stir. I figured this out as when me and my siblings were hatchlings if we didn't want to get up Alpha would tickle our underbellies, which always woke us up. After a few more of my breaths Beta finally opened her eyes and yawned. I nuzzled against her snout making both of us purr before I stood up, Beta quickly copying me.
We exited our nest together and made our way to the creek to get some water. I saw that Beta had stopped drinking and was staring at some tiny fish in the creek. Suddenly she snapped her jaws in the water trying to catch one of the fish, but she missed. She chirped in confusion as she didn't know where the fish had gone before she quickly lost interest and went back to drinking.
After we satisfied our thirst I sniffed the air for the scent of prey. Once I got the scent I decided to let Beta try to track down the prey. I called her over to me and sniffed the air before chittering for her to try. She reared up and began sniffing the air like I had done and chirped excitedly when she caught the scent before running in the direction the scent was coming from. I barked in surprise before running after her, Beta stopped when she found the source of the scent. It was another one of those large brown animals with two horns on its head.
'Good job Beta!' I praised in my head, nuzzling her to show my pride in her. She lowered herself closer to the ground and began approaching the animal. My eyes widened and I cut her off, she stopped and cocked her head to the side, chittering in confusion. I hissed at her before beginning to sneak up on the prey. I looked back and saw that she had gotten the message and stayed in the bushes, I had just gotten her back and I didn't want her to get killed by this animal's horns.
Once I got close enough to the animal I pounced on it, however I had misjudged the distance between me and the animal causing one of the horns to stab into my right arm. I yelped in surprise and pain, but didn't let my injury stop me from killing the animal.
Once the animal was dead I checked on my wound, it was on the inside of my right arm between the elbow and shoulder. The injury had a fair amount of blood flowing from it, I was glad that I didn't let Beta try to kill this animal as its horns could easily kill her. I was snapped out of my thoughts by a worried chirp, I saw Beta looking at me with concern. I chittered and nuzzled against her snout to let her know that I was okay before we began to eat.
When we were both full I dragged the carcass back to our nest for us to finish later, Beta walking beside me. As we got closer to our nest my injury began to hurt more and more. After I dragged the remains of the animal into the vehicle our nest was in I checked on my wound again. It had stopped bleeding, but the surrounding flesh had begun to turn darker.
I laid down and tried to clean my wound, but as soon as my tongue touched the injury my head jerked away and I hissed in pain. A chitter caught my attention and I saw Beta standing close to me, her eyes shining with concern, she looked between my wound and my eyes. She moved closer and tried to clean my wound the same way I did for her when she broke her claw. I hissed in pain again and gently pushed her back. I appreciated her effort, but there was only one being that I knew of who could help my wound feel better, I needed to go see Alpha. I stood up and called for Beta to follow me as I made my way to Alpha's home.
Once I got close to Alpha's home out of habit I hid in the bushes and observed what was happening. I got lucky as he was currently sitting outside by himself, as me and Beta drew closer I couldn't help but wonder where his family was. My question was answered when his mate opened the door to his home and called for him.
"Hey Owen, you ready for lunch?" She asked him. I was close enough that when I shook the bushes he could see me when he turned and looked in response to the sound, but his mate couldn't see me.
"I'll be there in a minute Claire." He said.
"Okay." His mate "Claire" replied before closing the door.
He put down his drink and held out his hand, "Hey Blue." He said, looking at me as I emerged from the bushes, Beta walking close behind me. I barked softly in greeting and Beta chittered.
"Hello to you too Beta." He said, briefly looking down at her before looking back up to me. Once I got close enough he began to rub the top of my head. Just like when me and my siblings were hatchlings if we got injured he quickly noticed my wound.
"Blue, you're hurt." He said before beginning to gently raise my arm so he could get a better look at the wound, I allowed him to do it as I trusted him to help. Using the hand that wasn't holding my arm he began rubbing over the wound, I closed my eyes and bared my teeth at the pain.
"Shh... Easy Blue, I need to see how had your injury is." He said, noticing my reaction.
'Please hurry up and get it over with Alpha.' I silently pleaded in my head. After another minute he finished checking my wound.
"It's nothing major Blue, it should heal up in about a week." He said before going and getting one of those containers that always had a lot of things in them to help injuries. He opened the container and took out something small that he tore open and pulled out a white cloth. He began rubbing the cloth on my wound to clean it, I winced and forced down a whimper as it stung.
Luckily it didn't take long for him to clean my injury, he also wiped away the blood that was on my arm. He then took out a roll of "bandages" and began wrapping them around my wound, Beta was watching with curiosity. After a few wraps he cut the bandage and made sure it was securely around my wound.
"All done Blue, I'll come check on you in a few days to see how well you're healing." He said as he packed up the container. As always my wound felt better now that he had taken care of it, I chirped to tell him thank you.
"You're welcome Blue." He said, smiling before I turned around and began heading back to our nest, Beta running after me.
We stopped at the creek to get a quick drink before heading back to our nest. I laid down next to the vehicle our nest was in as Beta began playing with her favorite toy, an old can that she had found in our nest. As she continued playing I grabbed a horn from an old kill and began gnawing on it, keeping an eye on Beta as she rolled the can on the ground before running after it and jumping at it, growling playfully. I was glad that I had gone to see Alpha as I learned that my injury wasn't serious and he prevented it from potentially getting worse.
Beta continued playing until she tired herself out. She grabbed the can and brought it back close to our nest before laying down next to me panting heavily. I stopped chewing on the horn I had and began preening her causing her to purr. Once I finished I continued to nuzzle against her and she did the same to me as we both continued purring.
