absolutely blown away by how gorgeously this is executed. the themes of connection between living things, of healing; the fairytale-like depiction of the characters, the manor, and the way their friendships and love grow within its world; this story has such PRESENCE.
reminded me of the phenomenon of putting a sentence through multiple layers of translation and back, ending with something ostensibly in its original language but rather different from its original form and meaning -- accomplished here with incredible coherence. it was like, these characters had been translated from language A(CD canon) to language B(BC Sherlock), then to language F(rances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden) while simultaneously back to A, and the resulting piece is both like and unlike any one of them. it's a tremendous fusion of setting and characterization and plot and style.
and what a well-developed writing style. the mood of the story is established with such confidence; the strong yet unobtrusive voice of the narrator (because while much of this presents
WatsonJohn's interiority, he is not the narrator, who knows and describes things John is not conscious of) is so SPECIFIC throughout -- this must be as fantastic a reflection and as soaring a refraction of its inspiration as the author's one ACD fic was of its own. -
