Shortcomings

Summary:

It wasn't often, but his height would become a pet peeve.

Notes:

How did I not bother to look up their heights on the AA Wiki after seeing people freak that Apollo was 6 inches shorter than Klavier? After finding out myself, I had to write something about it >x<

Work Text:

Normally it didn’t bother him, but after today, he had quite enough. He stood in front of some cabinets within their open kitchen, staring up at the furthest ones. Apollo’s lips were curling into a half scowl and being reminded of what happened earlier that day. He hadn’t moved from his spot for a minute, which prompted the prosecutor, who was trying to keep their pets occupied, to go over to him. He didn’t turn his head to look, only seeing him appear out of his peripheral. Then the taller man’s head leaned over into view from his left side, his signature blonde hair twist dangled gently.

“Okay, Herr Forehead, tell me what’s wrong?” He asks gently, but with a hint of playfulness.

That.” Apollo answers stiffly.

The other’s gaze follows his to the highest cabinets, and it didn’t take long to put two and two together. “Ach. You need me to get it for you?”

No.” He cuts in, surprising the prosecutor momentarily. Maybe he was a little harsh in saying it, so he recomposed himself and sighed heavily. “Sorry, Klavier. I guess I’m still mad from the last case I just finished.”

Now he turned his head towards the other’s direction when he leaned against the island counter tops, folding his arms loosely. Klavier was still retaining his soft grin. “I’m listening.”

He started from the beginning of yesterday, with the Wrights, even the newer girl, Athena, were teasing him as usual. Apollo was used to that however, and they always meant it in harmless fun. Although when it came to his height, he generally found it annoying. Trucy, being the angel she was, would tell him that he always gave her the best hugs (Mr. Wright being the exception) and proceeded to do just that with him. It worked, of course, he couldn’t stay mad at her. They landed a case as usual and left to go investigate and question their client down at the detention center. When the two arrived later to interview them, his client had made some offhanded comment about how short he was. Again, the same pang of annoyance from that morning returned, only it took much longer to leave than before. Why couldn’t people not comment about his height as soon as they see him?

Luckily it was an open and shut case, and they were able to get their client acquitted today. As the real perpetrator was led away in handcuffs from the witness stand, they couldn’t help but throw insults his way, which was typical of most criminals he’s dealt with. However, this person just went in on him about his short stature in particular once they saw him react, much to his dismay. Some more colorful words flung out before the double doors of the courtroom slammed shut. As the verdict was delivered, Apollo silently fumed behind the defense bench all the while.

All the way home and up until now his anger still hadn’t faded, which brought him back to the current situation at hand. “It’s one thing at the agency, but I have to hear it at the courthouse too? Give me a break!” Apollo nearly shouted with his famous Chords of Steel.

Klavier had moved closer to him during his story. “I understand, and I’m sorry that happened to you.” His voice almost dropped to a suggestive whisper, making Apollo shudder. He always loved hearing that tone from him. “Will it make you feel better if I said I absolutely adore how you are right now? Especially when we get carried away?”

Oh no… now he had to just remind of him of that one time where his short stature had almost ruined the mood for him. Klavier had been adventurous that night, and rather then moving them to their shared bedroom, they disrobed right in the living room (Thank God the curtains were closed) and made use of the back of the sofa. With his upper half leaning halfway over, he was held onto from the hips. Truthfully, it was exhilarating at first, but the more his partner really got into it, he felt his legs be spread apart and his lower half be pulled up more as the pace gradually hastened. At some point he was pulled back and upwards a tad too far, and the tips of his toes were barely making contact with the carpet. Apollo yelped at the sensation, which made Klavier stop. His feet were able to touch the floor again from the lack of movement. He was asked quickly if he was alright, to which he quelled the prosecutor’s worry. Apollo didn’t have the nerve to tell him the real issue that was bothering him, instead requesting they just go back to their bedroom to finish. Thankfully, he didn’t question him more on it, not wanting to upset the defense attorney. Still, it had been a successful night in the end for them both.

“Sure, Romeo.” Apollo rolled his eyes. He had been standing here forever, and still hadn’t gotten what he was trying to get. Enough time was wasted already talking about his insecurities. Despite having rejected his help before, now he was finding himself looking up at Klavier. The words became stuck in his throat for a second, but he forced them out along with the shame. “Okay, I do kind of need… some assistance.”

“There’s no need to be ashamed, liebe. Now just tell me what to do.”

It was still surreal to watch the prosecutor reach up with ease. Apollo groaned when they couldn’t find what he needed, meaning it must have been stored elsewhere. Some more searching after, it was revealed that the item was stowed away in the cabinet closest to the floor. It took all of his willpower to not scream. Klavier handed him what he wanted and was about to stand back up. The cabinet door from above had been left half open. The defense attorney himself barely skimmed the bottom by about an inch or two, but the same couldn’t be said for the other. It happened so quickly that Apollo didn’t get the chance to properly warn him as he rose.

“Wait, Klav-!” He had hit it, hard. Apollo could only imagine how much that hurt as he went to his side to steady him from stumbling back from the impact. The prosecutor hissed loudly, and a hand went to his head instinctively to check the damage. He led them over to the nearby dining table to sit after closing the cabinet doors. “I-I’m sorry, I tried to say-”

“N-nein… It’s okay. That was my fault. Mein gott… that really hurt.” Klavier still somehow managed to chuckle, albeit weakly. “One of the many struggles tall people have to go through.”

Alright, he had to give that one to him. Apollo shared in his light laughter, checking the spot where he got hit again. “Well, I don’t see a bump forming.” A sigh a relief was leaving the prosecutor but stopped halfway by the next thing he said. “Or maybe one will later.” Klavier leaned into him. Since Apollo was still standing up beside him, his head was tucked just under his chin. Very few times did Klavier feel smaller against him, and he wasn’t going to protest. The other couldn’t see him smiling.

“You wound me, Herr Forehead.” He jests.

The weekends were really the only times they could do market runs together. Apollo had let the prosecutor handle everything on the list that was too high up. It was better then asking an employee in his opinion, not to mention the slight embarrassment of not being able to do something so simple. They had other work that needed to be taken care of, not wasting time doing a menial task for him. He could see that Klavier wanted to reassure him, though he didn’t, only smiling and asking what was next on their list. It was sweet of the man to instantly want to comfort him, but he did not want the other’s words to come out of obligation every time he was bothered. He was being rather ridiculous himself if he had to be honest, letting something minor like this get to him. What a mature lawyer he was…

There were self-checkouts, but only if you had a certain number of items. Obviously, they exceeded the limit just from glancing at the cart. Apollo sighed, wondering why he even had hopes of potentially skipping the line in the regular check-out lanes. They took their place in the line and slowly made their way. While absentmindedly roving his eyes over big name brands of candies and chocolate, the prosecutor had perked up suddenly. “Ach, I forgot one more thing! I’ll be right back.” He turns around and politely muttered a couple “excuse me’s” to the people behind them.

Well, that was poor timing because they were next to put their items on the conveyor belt. He grumbled to himself over the man’s forgetfulness as he emptied the cart. The cashier and bagger at the end were about halfway through now, and one foot of his started to tap out of impatience and slight worry. Klavier wasn’t going to make it back in time at this rate. The young woman was about to scan the liquor bottle, then stopped. She looked up from her register’s screen. “Can I see an ID for this, sir?”

“Uh, yeah. Hold on.” He fished out his wallet from his back pocket and flashed his ID to her.

She leaned forward to read the small text. Her eyes darted from him and back to the card. “You’re 23?”

He felt his shoulder tense and a pang of annoyance shoot through him for the briefest of moments. “Yes? I’m pretty sure the legal age is 21.” He tried to keep his tone even.

“Oh, I didn’t mean that sir. I was just a bit surprised because of…” She gestured with one hand hovering over her head. The implication was clear.

What?” Apollo started, then one more item was dropped onto the belt, making him look to his left side.

“So sorry!” Klavier faced the cashier, lowering his head and slightly tilting down the designer shades he wore when out in public. “And yes, fraulein, this bright young man is 23.”

It looked like the young woman had short circuited when she saw his blue eyes. Apollo was still shocked to this day that some people couldn’t tell from the platinum blonde hair, despite it only being held back in a loose bun, it was obviously the former Gavinners lead singer and guitarist. Then again, he hadn’t known about the man when they met back in People Park, so he couldn’t judge. “O-Oh! I apologize, Mr. Gav-”

Klavier raised a hand, putting on his celebrity persona. “Nein, it’s alright. We’ll be doing this by card, ja?” He looked over to Apollo expectantly.

The defense attorney finally put away his ID card back into his wallet. If this made the cashier forget her initial train of thought, then fine with him. When the fresh air of the outdoors hit him, the tension in Apollo’s chest now started to ebb away. After unloading the bags into the trunk of the prosecutor’s BMW, which didn’t sport his usual trademark purple and band’s insignia for once, they started for home. At a red light, Klavier was caught between a frown and an apologetic grin. “I could tell what that girl was saying to you, schatzi. You know she didn’t mean it that way.”

Apollo’s arms were folded over his chest as he leaned back into the lush leather car seat. He blew a frustrated gust of air from the corner of his mouth when one of his brunette spikes drooped down over his forehead. “I know, but still! Nobody takes me seriously with… this!” He gestures over himself.

Klavier placed a hand over his thigh and patted it before gripping the steering wheel again. “I love you the way you are. No one and nothing is going to ever change that. Now what do you say to making one of your favorites tonight?”

He looked out through the tinted window on his side, trying to conceal the blush that was now evident on his face. God, he adored this man. “Yeah, I would like that.”

The next few weeks ended up being busy for the two lawyers. One saving grace was that their last case had them facing off in court like old times. With each “Objection!” flying back and forth, Trucy blissfully watched them, cooing at how blatant their relationship was, and hoped one day she can experience those kinds of feelings herself. Once again, the truth was found together, and during the verdict Klavier had winked at him from across the prosecutor’s bench. Apollo sheepishly rubbed his neck and tried playing off the pink tint that colored his cheeks while ignoring Trucy’s teasing pokes to his side.

Mr. Wright and Athena had been waiting for them in the lobby, having watched from the gallery. Trucy was still bouncing excitedly as she immediately went on a tangent of how hopelessly enamored Apollo and Klavier were with each other. Unsurprisingly his boss chimed in with his own opinion, saying watching them was the equivalent of a soap opera. He didn’t think they were that obvious… but then again this is coming from people that had special abilities themselves. Athena’s hi-tech necklace lit up a bright green as she clasped her hands together, saying it was amazing watching him and the other man in court work together, and wholeheartedly agreed with Trucy that they made a cute pair.

Apollo was spared more teasing from the Wrights when Klavier appeared in the lobby shortly after. “Ah, there you are, Herr Forehead.” He acknowledged the small group with a simple nod. “Herr Wright, and Fraulein Trucy.” Athena in her bright yellow suit caught his eye shortly. “Pardon me, I didn’t introduce myself. Klavier Gavin.” His silver ringed hand outstretched to her politely.

She shook hands with the prosecutor, introducing herself as well. When they let go, Athena grinned cheekily at Apollo. “Oh, he’s really good.”

After some smaller chit chat and a congratulations to another job well done, the prosecutor stood closer to the defense attorney, even slipping one arm over his shoulders. Mr. Wright’s eyebrows raised in amusement and understood the implication crystal clear. He told Trucy and Athena that they were going back to the agency and that they’ll see Apollo tomorrow. The two young women looked at the pair, then smirked playfully. Great, as if having his co-workers knowing what his plans were after work wasn’t embarrassing enough. He shook his head and covered his face with one hand. The group was out of sight now.

“We better get going before the paparazzi ambush me.” Klavier started to lead him in the direction of the entrance.

His purple motorcycle was parked out front. Since they were both on this case, Klavier had wanted them to arrive together to the courthouse. Apollo still wasn’t used to riding around on it, but so far, the other had been a safe driver. He waited for him to get on first and start the engine, then followed suit by sitting behind and slipping both arms around his waist. His nervousness typically faded away once on the road for the next few minutes. It made Apollo realize that he did miss this and hoped that more opportunities would come in the future for them.

The urgency to make it back inside his home was rising with each step closer. Their dog, Vongole, was at the front door barking in greeting. Klavier said he was going to check the food and water bowls first and walked ahead. Apollo was petting the happy golden retriever on her head, commenting that Mikeko, their cat, would hardly ever welcome them home like Vongole did. He heard the ceramic food bowl clinking from the fresh dry food being poured, and Vongole turned to go towards the source. From down the hallway, Mikeko then finally appeared upon hearing the noise. Sheesh. With their pets taken care of in the meantime, Klavier came right back and tugged Apollo along to their bedroom, making sure to have the door closed to avoid another cat interruption like last time.

They needed this after weeks of hard work and not being able to see much of each other. Apollo gazed longingly at the man laying beneath him, and still moving his hips gently to try and not overstimulate him too much. His pleasure hazed mind and bare sticky skin rubbing against the other was making it difficult to keep himself upright for much longer. He voices this, and Klavier began to sit up himself, scooting towards the headboard. He adjusted accordingly to his position but remained sitting atop his lap and wrapped his arms over broad shoulders. Klavier still hadn’t withdrew, and Apollo could feel him softening. The white mess slowly dripping on those chiseled tan abs of his made him moan slightly from the lewd sight.

He then recalled what the prosecutor had said to him before they got to the courthouse this morning. “So… what was the whole thing about making me feel better about my height again?”

Klavier’s blue eyes widened, making a minor noise of disbelief. “Were you not paying attention, schatzi? I’ve already shown you, and I still am actually.” His hold over his waist tightens as he pulled Apollo forward more, their foreheads resting against each other. “You had to look down at me while riding, and now were sitting at the same height.” Apollo didn’t appear to understand still, narrowing his eyes in puzzlement. He only smiled and kissed his semi frowning lips. “What I’m saying is… that there are ways, in general, around height differences. We just have to be creative, mein liebling.”

The defense attorney felt his face growing hotter. Only Klavier could make their private times an example. He was unable to help a grin of his own from forming. “But we’ve been doing those positions for a while. I don’t know if that’s considered creative.” He points out.

“But they work, ja?” His smile became wider, knowing that he was in the right.

His hands started to weave through his mussed blonde hair and pull him into another tender kiss. Apollo tittered between their lips, absolutely loving every second spent in this man’s embrace. “You’re such a dork.”

Klavier laid further back into the pillows propped against the headboard while holding onto the other. He looked up at Apollo when they pulled back briefly to breathe once more, both of their smiles mirroring. “That’s why you love me, Apollo~”
