Chapter 1: I. Riddle Rosehearts

Chapter Text

The first overblot that Yuu experienced was terrifying, to say the least.

To come from a place where magic was just seen as fantasy, or a lousy card trick, the events of Riddle’s overblot were a rude awakening to magic and its’ place in Twisted Wonderland.

The aftermath revealed a truth to the human, though.

Riddle wasn’t a bad person. Everybody snaps sometimes, and he had more than a good reason too.

The overblots, from what Yuu could gather, were seen as dehumanizing, animalistic. Evil, even.

Having to go through an emotional episode where you relive your childhood trauma in front of your dorm mates can’t be good for somebody’s already declining mental state.

Yuu makes the decision to reach out to Riddle precisely one week and one day after his overblot. They enlist Cater and Trey, who are more than willing to help their friend, given their now increased concern for his raw emotions.

Riddle is studying in his room when he hears a knock on the exterior of his door.

He rises from his desk with a light sigh, and upon crossing his room and opening the door, he is somewhat surprised to see Yuu, a decorative pink box clutched in their hands.

“I hope I’m not bothering you, Riddle.” They start, nervously shifting their weight from foot to foot under Riddle’s gaze.

“You’re not. I was just studying.”

“Can I come in?”

Yuu and Riddle sit awkwardly on the latter’s bed, staring anywhere but each other.

Riddle wonders what they came here for, and can’t help but look at the box in their hand.

His eyes widen a fraction.

Was that a-?

“I brought you a strawberry tart.” Yuu spoke up, simultaneously breaking Riddle’s train of thought and answering his question.

“I just… what happened last week, I felt awful.” They admit, finally making eye contact with the house warden as he frowned.

“That wasn’t your fault. I was- it was bound to happen.” Riddle says gently, his guilt from that day slowly re-entering his consciousness.

“That doesn’t make it less painful for me to see my friend get hurt.” They argue back, and Riddle feels something bloom in his stomach.

Friend.

Riddle nods slowly, as if he were a baby trying to balance his own weight.

Yuu seems to pick up on his bashfulness, and they gently push the tart into his hands.

“Trey helped me make it, and Cater chose the box.” They say with a smile, pride swelling in their chest as Riddle opens the package. A pure, unfiltered smile adorns his features, and he lets out a tiny laugh that anybody else would’ve missed.

“This is very kind of you. I really appreciate it.” He says, voice completely sincere as he gazes at Yuu. If they look hard enough, they can see Riddle as a child, gray eyes bright and voice filled with excitement.

They’re silent for a moment longer, Riddle gazing at the tart in complete infatuation as Yuu mentally gushes over how adorable he looks when he’s happy.

“I surely can’t finish this by myself, however.” He muses, and now it’s Yuu’s turn to smile as they scoot just a bit closer to Riddle, their thighs and shoulders brushing with his as the two breathe.

Riddle splits the tart carefully and evenly, offering half to Yuu.

Their fingers brush as Yuu accepts the treat, which sets both of their faces on fire.

The two eat the dessert in between casual conversation, their hushed giggles floating out of Riddle’s open window and being carried by the breeze.
