Work Text:
“Steve, do you have a quarter.” She whacked him on the shoulder as he finished checking out at the grocery store. They were picking up groceries for a long weekend with no school (Robin) and no work (Robin and Steve). Robin’s parents were at a convention over President’s Day and Steve immediately offered up his house for a weekend long besties sleepover. The kids were coming over for pizza and movies on Sunday afternoon but the rest of the time was besties time.
He absently reached into his pocket and dumped his change into Robin’s outstretched hands. There were two quarters, so score. She put the rest of the change in her pocket and plunked the first quarter into the machine and turned the dial. It clunked once and she turned it again. With the second clunk a toy came shooting out of the machine. It was one of those sticky hands. Nice. Sure it’d be fuzzy and unusable in five minutes after she opened it, but those five minutes would be pure torture for Steve so it was worth the quarter. She moved to the second machine in the bank and stuck in her second quarter. Steve walked up behind her and sighed, like the put upon mother of 7 he was.
“What was that sigh for, Steve.” She said as she turned the dial.
“This is a waste of quarters. What are you five? You want that little plastic lipstick charm? That's what you’re trying for?”
“No, I’m hoping for the pair of barrettes.” She pointed to the display of items in the machine and the rainbow heart barrettes on display.
“Robin, those won’t actually work in your hair.”
“I do not care.” She turned the dial a second time and the machine shook a bit as it gave up its prize. “It’s all about the balance of the risk and the reward.”
She cracked the plastic dome open and inside were two bracelets, each had a small heart charm attached. One said BE FRI and the other ST ENDS.
“Risk and Reward, Harrington.” She cracked a smile at him. “Are you a BE FRI kinda guy or a ST ENDS?”
“What the hell is that?” He asked, his face scrunched up in confusion.
“It’s jewelry, dingus. I think I may be a ST ENDS kinda girl myself.” She managed to drop both bracelets as she tried to put one on her wrist.
Steve rolled his eyes at her but picked them both up and got the bracelet around her wrist. It was actually a bit loose and she thought for a second maybe these were supposed to be necklaces? For babies? But they’d be choking hazards right? And what kind of baby needed jewelry anyway?
“I guess that makes me BE FRI?” He asked.
“Duh. Who else would I be ST ENDS with? Huh?” She said but she could see the blush of Steve’s cheeks and the small smile she knew meant he was actually happy. She grabbed the bracelet from him and put it around his wrist behind his watch. It was shocking it fit at all. What small children were these designed for?
“I don’t know, I’m not just BE FRI with anyone.”
“Torture Twins for life.” She said and raised her wrist up.
“Torture Twins for life.” Steve said and raised his wrist up to hers, letting the charms dangle together and spell out BEST FRIENDS.
