Chapter 1: Relationship Problems

Chapter Text

It was a cloudy afternoon, Emmet, Lucy, Unikitty and General Mayhem were out on a new planet. The four were assigned to see if the world is livable and search for any valuable resources. The planet had a bunch of thick jungles and forests. So far, nothing seemed out of place or abnormal.

“So, if this place does become approved for residents, what do you think they're gonna name it,” Emmet asked.

“Not sure, maybe like Gardenia or something, I dunno,” Mayhem replied, scanning the area for any hostile creatures.

Lucy turned to look at Mayhem and chuckled. “Seriously? That’s the best name you could come up with,” she asked amused. May simply rolled her eyes at the comment.

“Well, whatever it is, I'm sure it’s gonna be cool,” Unikitty chirped, jumping on top of a large log.

The group continued to walk north for another twenty minutes before deciding to set up camp. Luckily, Emmet brought all of the necessaries for camping, as it says in his instructions. Unikitty and Mayhem were assigned to scout the area and collect samples. Emmet and Lucy were tasked to set up their campsite.

Lucy was busy setting up the campfire and the cots, while Emmet was setting up their tents. The two didn’t say anything to each other, causing an awkward silence.

Lately the two have been somewhat distant from each other. Ever since Emmet had gotten a letter that his father had passed away, he hasn’t said much to anyone.

She understands that Emmet is probably trying to process this information. Despite the fact that he never talks about his personal life or family. Come to think of it, she doesn’t even know if Emmet has any other living relatives — besides his little sister, Maya.

“So, how’s your day going?” Lucy asked, desperately trying to break the silence between the two.

“Um- it’s good,” Emmet replied blankly, not bothering to turn and face her. Instead, he finished the tents and started to walk away.

“Where are you-“ Lucy tried speaking, but was cut off by her lover’s monotone voice. “Bathroom,” he said, continuing to walk off into the woods.

“Emmet!” she cried out, also getting up from her spot. This time, the construction worker turned to face his friend, wearing a blank and rather gloomy look.

“Yeah,” he asked nonchalantly.

“Look, are you- like, okay?” Lucy questioned. Concern and a little bit of annoyance filling her tone of voice.

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” Emmet replied, not exactly understanding the reason for such a question. Normally, Lucy wouldn’t mind him being oblivious, sometimes finding it adorable. However, this is not “normally.”

“Because you’re acting, different…”

“How so?”

“How so- Emmet, you barely spoke to me or any of our friends for the past two weeks,”

“Oh- Sorry,”

“Emmet, I don’t want you to apologize, you haven’t done anything to do so, however, I’m worried about you. Ever since you got the news that your dad passed away you’ve become distant,”

“S-sorry, Lucy,”

“I just said I don’t want you to apologize Emmet, I’m not mad, I’m just worried about you. Do you need space? Because I'm alright with backing off, but you haven’t said anything to me!”

“I’m sorry-“

“Emmet I swear, if you apologize one more time, i’m gonna grab the nearest cactus and send you to next christmas,”

“Well what do you want me to say?!” Emmet shouted, throwing his arms in the air. Lucy was taken back by his sudden outburst and went silent. Emmet was also stunned by his sudden outburst as he also went.

“I… I’m gonna go to the bathroom,” was all Emmet said before turning tail and rushing into the forest. Lucy reached out her hand, wanting to call out to him, but decided to leave him be.

“He’s probably trying to avoid the topic,” Lucy thought to herself. Deciding to apologize when he gets back, for now, she’ll focus on the task at hand.

By now, Mayhem and Unikitty had returned, gathering all the information and samples they needed. Lucy had just finished making dinner and got the fire going. However, there was no sign of Emmet anywhere.

“Hey Wyldstyle, um- where’s Emmet?” Unikitty asked, sitting down next to the campfire where Lucy was sitting.

“He said he was going to the bathroom, but he hasn’t come back yet,” Lucy muttered softly, turning her head towards the direction Emmet had gone.

“It’s been twenty minutes, unless he’s got some serious stomach issues, I suggest we go look for him,” Mayhem stated. She then pulled up a holographic map with four red dots on it, one of them was around thirty miles from where they were.

“One of us should go looking for him, we still haven’t confirmed if this planet is safe or not,”

Lucy sighed before raising her hand. “I’ll go, we kind of got into a fight and he ran off, I have to apologize anyways.”

Unikitty spun her from the food with a confused look on her face. “You guys got into a fight? What for?” the hybrid questioned.

“Emmet has been distant lately, and when I tried to talk to him about it, he just snapped before running off,” Lucy explained.

She was given a walkie-talkie and a holographic map before Mayhem spoke. “Whatever relationship problems you two have, just make sure to get back before sunset.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be right back,” Lucy got up from her seat and started to follow Emmet’s coordinates.

Lucy had arrived in the area of Emmet’s coordinates, five minutes had passed and there still was no sign of Emmet. By this point, Lucy had started to worry.

“Emmet, come on I’m sorry- Can you please just say something,” Lucy shouted, only to be met with silence. She sighed before continuing to search for her special best friend.

A bush started to rustle in the corner of her eye, making a small shuffling sound. Lucy spun her head quickly towards the bush, her senses now on high alert, preparing for the worst.

Slowly, she crept up near the bush, making a small spear as a weapon. Now only two feet away, Lucy lifted up her spear with one hand and quickly knocked the branches with the other.

Expecting to meet with a ferocious beast, she instead was met with a small child. The kid appeared to be a boy, no older than five, had caramel brown hair, and wore a blue polo shirt and orange construction vest that was ten sizes too big for him.

“What the-“ She wanted to say, but tears started to form in the corner of his eyes. The look of fear and despair started to show on his face as started to let out small whimpers.

“Crap- Don’t cry! Um- I… Where are your parents,” Lucy sputtered, not expecting to be face to face with a toddler, especially on an unknown planet. This, however, failed as the kid soon started to let out quiet sobs, covering his face with his long sleeves.

Having no experience and not wanting to deal with a child temper tantrum, Lucy scooped the boy into her arms trying to comfort him. “Hey, hey, it’s alright, don’t cry,” she said repeatedly, not actually believing it would work.

The boy let out a small sniffle, before looking up at Lucy. “Do you know where mama is?” he mumbled softly, attempting to wipe the tears in his eyes.

“Uh… I-I don’t know where she is- but I’ll help you look for her!” Lucy quickly replied once she noticed he started to whine again.

“What’s your name?” she sighed, letting go of her makeshift spear and setting the boy down on the ground. “I am Emmet Bickowsie,” the boy said, Lucy stared at him in shock.

“Emmet! What happened to you?!” she shouted, causing little Emmet to whimper in fear. She mentally kicked herself for scaring the poor boy again, regaining her calm composure.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Emmet, do you know who I am?” Lucy apologized, wanting to see if the now child Emmet had any of his memories. She got her answer when he shook his head.

“Well, how about you come with me and we can go look for your mommy. Sounds good?” Lucy said calmly, trying not to scare the boy anymore.

“Otay…” he answered, clenching to the side of her hoodie.

Lucy took Emmet into her arms again, as the two walked back to the campsite. Completely overlooking the small glowing blue stone that was right where Emmet had been sitting.
