Chapter Text
She reconsidered every plan she had ever made with just the touch of his hand against her skin, making her feel completely safe, yet at war in her soul as she tried to compromise the growing divide. She at one time knew what she wanted, a life of complete solitude and dying alone. A life she once thought she was destined to, a destiny she couldn't escape. It hadn't scared her, but now she knew she didn't want that anymore. Without him, she felt she wouldn't be able to think straight, his presence soothed her, far more than any nightmare or murder mystery ever had.
The cool breeze flew around her as she sat quietly in the cemetery, sitting in front of Nero's grave as she let her thoughts roam wild, spreading into the wind as each one came to mind. They mainly consisted of Xavier, but now she was set on establishing exactly what she would be doing with the rest of her life. As much as she loved the boy, she refused to be a stay-at-home partner, but rather one that explored the world's hidden wonders.
It sounded pathetic, to crave someone so much but also want to be independent, or perhaps it sounded crazy. She was indeed crazy, though she figured it was not a matter of state of mind when it came to her plans for what she would be doing for the rest of her life. It depended on what the boy wanted as well she supposed, but she knew he would ultimately tell her 'whatever you prefer.' For the first time, she didn't know what she preferred, just that she wanted to be by his side.
Did it always prove this difficult in a romantic relationship? Perhaps her parents faced the same issue when they were young, in love, and attending Nevermore. She cringed, remembering the amount of affection they gave each other, vowing she would never become that way with Xavier. She would rather drink poison than allow herself to become that...horrendous. But maybe Xavier would make it more tolerable for her, with his gentle hands wrapping around her waist, feeling his fingers gliding up her arm never failed to make her feel a pulse of electricity shoot through her body, satisfying to the touch. She shook her head, going back to the thought at hand.
She still had to graduate high school and decide her fate in this wretched world. Being a writer was her dream, and she knew she would continue to pursue becoming an author. It was coming sooner than she had expected, far too quickly under the circumstances she found herself in; in what she assumed could only be in love with a boy, finishing up her novel that she hoped to publish, and surviving another year at Nevermore Academy. Her head whirled as she processed it all, and she remembered the vision she had a few months ago.
The one where Nevermore was in pieces, crumbling to the ground as she walked through it, the feel of power coursing through her veins as she walked against the hard floors, and through the mysterious school. What would happen that would cause such a thing to happen at the school? Would she be able to prevent that? And even if she did, wasn't her fate already sealed through visions? There was no guarantee that they were real, but considering 3 separate people had the same one would be too coincidental for it to suddenly not become a reality.
She only hoped Xavier would be able to tolerate her stubborn ways, she knew what she wanted and she knew how she was, there was no changing that any time soon. But she couldn't help but consider that he might grow tired and weary of her ways and eventually leave her for someone who would be considered more 'normal' than she. Her life was not meant to be normal, she was meant to disturb the comfortable and calm the disturbed. It panged at her heart, and she quickly blew the thought off as her mind replayed the memories they had together, ones she treasured deeply within her soul. He had changed her, perhaps for the better, and allowed her to soften and melt her frozen heart.
She had allowed the walls she built around her heart to become a prison, keeping her from seeing what was on the other side, instead feeding her the lies that promised nothing but the worst for her, everything she dreaded being a constant, dull whisper in her ear. It nudged at her, tugged on her heartstrings as she let it eat away at her until she found herself at a certain school.
Nevermore Academy not only provided a safe haven for her as an outcast but allowed her to gain friendships and even a relationship from the charm it held within its gates. It wasn't the plan, it never was the plan to grow attached, yet she had. The school had grown on her, she had to sadly admit, but in a sense, she was grateful it had. It offered many torturous experiences, and she was looking forward to another one, though she hoped it would be less near-death experiences. Those were getting boring, she needed something that would offer pain, a good scare, and another case. It was never fun when there wasn't something dangerous lurking around the corner, though now she felt extra compelled to not find herself in a risky situation with one of her close friends.
It had been enough with Xavier and Enid getting hurt at her expense, but even her brother was targeted as a result of her getting involved in a mystery. It was bound to happen again, the finding herself in a mystery part, and hopefully not finding her friends bleeding out as she had seen before. She enjoyed the gore, rather relinquished in the blood and screams of victims, but it was slightly different when she cared for them.
She stood up, heading back inside as the sun beat against her pale skin, and she walked in and immediately regretted her decision. Morticia and Gomez were all over each other, animals to say the least. Wednesday pushed past them, scurrying up to her room as she remembered the time.
Her phone began to ring, and she quickly swiped it off her desk, connecting the call as she held the phone back away from her ear as her roommate begin to ramble loudly.
"Oh, Wednesday! It's nice to see your face, AH it already feels like it has been an eternity! It has been so boring here, besides when we wolf out! That is like so fun, we actually bond now! Well, not with my mom, she usually tells me off and then goes on and on about how I need to find a mate, and when I tell her I found one-OH! Look what Ajax got me! Isn't it so pretty?! It's definitely obvious we are soulmates, I'm just waiting for the talk! Oh Wednesday, my mom keeps telling me I need to find a mate and I told her it's Ajax and she got like, so mad at me! But honestly, I don't see anything wrong. Do you? Because Ajax is like perfect for me..."
The noirette listened to Enid ramble on and on, she wasn't sure whether she was breathing or not at this point, until she finally paused, catching the girl off guard as she quickly replied.
"Enid, your get to choose who your mate is, even if your mother disproves. Or you can break things off, which I'm sure you don't want. The ring is horrific, and it has been merely 3 weeks since we have seen each other. I don't see why you are so dramatic about the actual time frame, we have called every week."
The werewolf squealed, thrilled her bestie was able to keep up with everything she had been saying. Sometimes she wondered how she did it but shrugged as she remembered it was Wednesday.
They continued for about an hour, Enid carrying the conversation as the raven silently listened, nodding from time to time as she occasionally put in her input, and Enid nodded graciously as she continued to ramble on about all her troubles. Wednesday wondered if this was the time when Enid talked about her issues, with her as if she were a therapist. She had to admit, she enjoyed the amount of trust her roommate had entrusted upon her, but she was saddened by the fact her own family wasn't willing to provide her the help she needed. Especially with her mother, targeting her and shaming her in front of her family as she had to take it.
Wednesday wasn't sure if she felt remorse for the girl, or outright sorry for her. They were similar, though she knew she did feel some form of pity. But Enid was strong and persevering, and that really seemed to help her through these events as she faced them one at a time. She wasn't the comforting type, no, but she would listen and offer suggestions.
Once the call ended, she noticed she had a text from Xavier, and she quickly clicked it as she sat down on her bed, scrolling through the photos he had sent her. He was on the vacation he had been so excited to take with his dad, and they had gone to Hawaii. More specifically, O'hau where apparently Celestia had some family. She was happy he would be getting on better terms with his father, but she deeply missed him. He would be gone for 3 weeks, and it had already been 2. He had made sure to text her every day, taking pictures and sending scattered texts throughout the day, claiming he had thought of her. Confessing his love for her seemed to be a recurring text, and she couldn't help but blush lightly each time.
It warmed her heart, though she would never admit it, to scroll through every small text he had sent her, sometimes it being a small black heart and others a long paragraph, mainly those that came late at night.
Thing climbed onto her desk, tapping at her as she snapped her head up, looking at the appendage as she frowned.
"I am not becoming obsessed with the device Thing, I am merely checking in with Xavier. There is nothing wrong with making sure he is still alive. Make another bold assumption and I will make sure you'll regret it," she stated firmly, and he hopped slightly before running off, more than likely to hide from her. A smirk rested on her face, and she knew she would tease the appendage until she grew bored of it.

Xavier sat on the stool as he quietly ate his dinner, smiling softly as he thought about his girl. He missed her, which was pathetic since it had only been two weeks. The trip helped them to get some well-needed space, not that there was anything wrong, rather things were quite the contrary. They were doing amazing, and he still was very much in love with her, and there were times when Wendy made it very obvious too. He knew she loved him, she had told him before, but if she hadn't, she wouldn't have accepted his promise ring.
The raven-haired girl flooded his mind as he suddenly felt someone beside him, and he snapped out of his thoughts as he looked over, and Celestia was smiling at him.
"Thinking about Wednesday?" She asked softly, and his eyes widened as he looked down, a blush covering his cheek as he realized he was caught red-handed. He nodded, and she let out a chuckle.
"Don't worry, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Tell me more about her," she said, and he looked at her as his eyes twinkled. There were so many things to tell her about Wendy, from her excellent musicianship to her fine archery skills. She was truly amazing, and the more he rambled about her, the more he felt his heart beat quicker, excitement filling him as he smiled. She was wonderfully wicked.
Celestia listened as he told her about how Wednesday could crack any case in due time, how she was feisty yet soft, how she was brilliant and talented, and she could see right through the boy. Young love was an amazing thing to witness, she only hoped for the best for the two as she felt somewhere deep within herself that they would be together for a long, long time.
"She sounds like quite the deal, Xavier. You've got yourself a real prize, but I bet she feels the same way about you."
Xavier nodded as he offered the woman a smile, before standing up and engulfing her in a hug, catching her by surprise.
"Thank you" he mumbled into her hair, and she stroked his hair before pulling back, cocking her head up at him.
"For what?"
He rubbed the back of his neck, looking down before meeting her eyes.
"For being my mom. I-I didn't have one you know, but now that I have one, I am grateful my dad found you," he said quietly, and Celestia felt tears in her eyes as she nodded.
"You're welcome."
They grinned at each other before walking back down to the beach, deciding to enjoy the sunny weather than hide in their hotel room all day.
~~
"But how did you do that-" Pugsley said, his eyes wide as he looked at his new modified invention. He looked up at his sister, who was presenting the machine back to him.
"I want it to be a fair fight," she stated smoothly, and he frowned as she raised her eyebrow.
"Not fair!"
She turned around and began to walk off as he quickly set down the invention, running after her as she headed down to the pond. They walked in silence until they reached the end of the dock, and she swiftly pulled out two chunks of silvery metal, handing one to him as he gave her a confused look.
"What's this?"
"It's sodium, highly reactive to water, it'll explode on impact and bounce across the water, leaving a trail of explosions behind it."
Throwing it into the water, they watched as it exploded on impact, skipping around as he soon threw his rock in, and soon the air was filled with loud explosions followed by a gurgling noise that came when the water fell back in place, and the explosions soon stopped as they sat down, and she pulled out another stick of dynamite.
"Oh! Wednesday look!"
He rubbed his finger along the wood, and suddenly a fire ignited on his finger, and he showed it off to her and her eyes widened, and he lit the dynamite before blowing out his finger. She swiftly threw it in, then turned quickly back to Pugsley.
"You're an outcast?" She questioned quickly, and he threw his hands up and gave her a weird look.
"I don't know! Last time I checked our entire family were outcasts, but anyways. I discovered this when I was experimenting, haven't told mom and dad yet, I wanna surprise them on the family road trip," he grinned, and she wanted to facepalm as she remembered the trip. It was coming up quicker than she had wanted, and she frowned as she looked at his brother. It seemed many things were sneaking up on her recently.
"That's a good idea," she said, winking at him before handing him the last stick of dynamite, standing up, and heading back to the house as he followed, holding the dynamite in hand as he followed her.
"But wait- you aren't gonna say anything right?" He questioned, and she stopped.
"And ruin the fun? Never."
He grinned at her before running back to the house, and she smirked as she thought about the revelation and that it must mean her parents would be sending him to Nevermore. Or perhaps it was some trick he had, some interesting contraption he had acquired in her time away.
Once she arrived back in her room, she grabbed her cello and twirled around. She forgot there was no window to climb out of, no porch that led to a small outlook of the school she found herself slightly missing. Frowning, she sat behind the instrument and began to play to her soul's content, letting the dark notes strike the chords of her soul. It ran its gentle fingers down her skin, kissing the wounds that tormented her heart and plagued her skin, allowing her soul to dance with her demons. It had been a while, almost too long since she felt this, let herself go, and allowed herself to feel the darkness that hid within the chambers of her heart. She heard the echo of their empty laughter and the light patter of their footsteps from time to time, but it had faded, and she no longer knew where they dwelled.
Perhaps they remained in the depths of her mind, lingering, creeping, waiting for a moment of weakness to feast on. But for now, she was in control, and she knew it was no longer a battle she had to fight on her own, she now had the humbleness to confess to her friends and her boyfriend. The word was still so foreign to her tongue, but she knew in time it would become so natural.
Her love for him surpassed any emotion, idea, or nightmare she had ever encountered, and she knew it would be there for a long, long time.
And just across the ocean on a small island, a shaggy-haired boy had the same thought.
