Chapter 1: News

Chapter Text

Revali was coming back home from his Rito Village trip…Now that he was married to Mipha he moved from Rito Village to Zora’s Domain; their house near Toto Lake was built by the Zora architects as a wedding gift to them.
He still had some of the responsibilities back in Rito Village, so he flied there for a few days from time to time. He became a teacher and a flight instructor for younger fledglings of his village.
Half a year passed since their wedding and although Revali has gotten used to flying back and forth between Rito Village and Zora’s Domain, he was starting to think about asking Purah to create a sheikah portal near their home, so he could save both time and energy.
Finally, he landed at his house doorstep. Although he had been gone for a few days he still missed Mipha dearly.

“Mipha, I’m home!” Said Revali, entering the house.

The soft creaking of the floorboards was heard from upstairs. Suddenly, Revali saw Mipha at the top of the stairs. She descended from the second floor and approached him.

“Welcome back!” said Mipha and threw herself into Revali’s arms.

The blue rito tightly hugged her back.
After a short while, Revali released Mipha from his embrace.

“I’ve missed you” he said softly.

“I’ve missed you too” said the zora princess, smiling. “Now, let’s have dinner! Tell me how was your trip. How are your pupils..?

After dinner, Mipha and Revali lay quietly in the hammock they both shared. They also had a sleeping pool in their house, so Mipha slept there from time to time to stay hydrated. But this night, she chose to stay close to her husband.
Their eyes were closed but they were both still awake. Mipha’s head lay on his chest.

“Revali?” She she said quietly.

“Hm?”

“ I need to tell you something… It is actually very important…”

Her words alerted Revali. He opened his eyes and saw Mipha looking at him with serious expression. She looked nervous…

“What is it, Mipha? You look so pale…You’re not sick, are you?” He asked worriedly.
Then Mipha smiled tenderly, and it put Revali’s heart at ease.

“No, dear, I’m not sick…Actually, it is such a happy news that I cannot contain my joy…”

Mipha put her palm on his cheek.

“ Vali…We’re going to have a baby.”

At first, Revali couldn’t fully process what she had said. But after a moment, emotions filled him. His eyes widened. He knew that both Zora and Rito hatched from eggs…But still, it was quite rare for a zora and a rito to have a child together…

“You mean, you will lay an egg soon?” Asked Revali calmly, but in his heart was a turmoil of different feelings. He felt nervous, but joy prevailed. He wanted to become a father…He and Mipha even discussed it recently. The blue rito just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

“Yes, dear, in a few months.” Mipha giggled. “I’ve found out two days ago…Are you…happy?”

After a short moment of silence, Revali hugged Mipha tightly (but gently!).

“Oh, goddess, Mipha! We’re gonna be parents! I’m going to be a dad!” Said Revali, his voice was trembling slightly.

“Yes, dear!” Tears of happiness streamed down Mipha’s face. She nuzzled the crook of his neck.

“ I wonder if our child is going to be a zora or a rito…” whispered Revali, softly pressing his beak against her cheek.

“We’ll find out when I lay my egg. Zora’s eggs are transparent and soft while Rito’s eggs have a hard shell…” said Mipha softly. “ It also means that we have to start preparing for both case scenarios…”

“Yeah, we definitely have to…I’ll bring the incubator from Rito Village next time, just in case. Gosh, I’ll have to prepare blanket nest if our child turns out to be a rito.” Said Revali, pressing his feathered finger to his beak thoughtfully.

“And I’ll prepare my pool for hatching the egg, if the child turns out to be a zora”

“Let’s make a deal! If our child is a zora, you’ll choose a name, but if a child is a rito – I’ll be the one to name him or her.” The avian smiled proudly at Mipha with a spark in his eyes.

“ Alright! I already have a few names in mind…” Mipha answered with a laugh. “ By the way, we”ll probably have to tell my father that he’s going to be a grandfather…”

Two months later.

Mipha has finally laid her egg. She was exhausted after hours of pushing it out of her body, so Revali laid her down in her pool, since Zora’s bodies healed better in the water.
It turned out to be a rito egg with a hard shell. While Mipha was resting, Revali carefully put the egg into the already prepared so-called ‘blanket nest’ and surrounded it with the warmth of his feathers.

“I’ll look after it” he said, trying to get into a more comfortable position.

“Well…It looks like you’ll be the one naming our baby…” Mipha said quietly. Even though she was very tired, she was smiling.

“Yeah…” Revali’s eyes reflected the lights of the fire, which was illuminating the room. It was already pretty dark outside.

Revali started thinking about his past. He never had a real family…Sure, he had friends and everyone in Rito Village was helping him when he was a small fledgling but still it wasn’t the same. He never knew his blood parents…Actually, he never wanted to know them, since they abandoned him when he was just an egg. He was supposed to die before he even hatched, but he was lucky enough that the rito guard found his egg before it freezed.
The first time he saw his and Mipha’s egg, it has already become something precious and dear to his heart…After all, it was his and Mipha’s future child…
He looked at the egg again.

“Hey there, little one,” Revali said quietly, still warming the egg with his feathers. He didn’t want to wake up Mipha, who had already fallen asleep. “You know, you haven’t even hatched yet, but your mum and dad already love you very much.”

Revali knew that at this stage, his child probably couldn’t hear him, but he still wanted to say that.

“I will not abandon you…You are safe with me…”
