The days of playing volleyball professionally were long behind Hinata Shoyo. All he was known for as now is being a streamer and YouTuber under the username NinjaSho, a homage to his old nickname from his days training in Brazil.

Miya Atsumu was living his dream, playing professionally in a top ranked team in the V. League and on Japan’s National team, when a tweet about some guy named Ninja Shoyo appeared on his timeline and an odd number of his friends and teammates were replying to it.

this is actually NOT the first haikyuu fic i've written, but it is the first one i'm posting bc i got too excited and couldn't wait to post this one. i'm genuinely so proud of it AHH I HOPE EVERYONE LIKES IT !!!!

i don’t make the rules

Atsumu appeared to have no choice but to do as NinjaSho said, and that was to tune into his stream. A closer look at the streamer’s account revealed he had tweeted not too long ago that his stream would be at 9PM tonight.

When 9PM came, Atsumu settled down on his sofa, his laptop on his lap and clicked on the link that was displayed on the tweet NinjaSho had posted earlier. It led him to a Twitch channel, a website he was only slightly familiar with. NinjaSho was already live, however the stream displayed letters spelling out Starting Soon and the background was orange and pattered with little crows and ninjas.

It was several minutes later that the soothing music came to a close and the screen shifted to a facecam that was stretched to cover the entire screen and Atsumu’s jaw dropped. This NinjaSho guy was really attractive. He had bright orange hair and it looked so incredibly fluffy, Atsumu was hit with the urge to run his fingers through it. He was dressed in a short-sleeved shirt that showed off his muscled arms and there were some bracelets on his wrists and a ring on each hand, along with a necklace that was tucked under his shirt.

Atsumu was fucked.

He was so mesmerised, he almost missed NinjaSho as he started talking and when his brain tuned back in, he realised the other had the most soothing voice ever.

“Hi, welcome back to the stream,” NinjaSho waved, a small grin playing at his lips, his eyes drifted to the side. “There’s a good amount more of you here than usual, so I’m assuming it was the shenanigans on Twitter that brought you here.”

“Okay, so… I have been thinking about it. Mainly because a lot of people I know live closer to Tokyo than to Miyagi, I mean you and Tobio are there, the rest of the Adlers too. Also it’s closer to Osaka, so the Jackals are closer.”

Atsumu thanked that user for asking.

“Why the Jackals? Well… Bokuto-san is on that team and I’ve known him for a long time, same with Sakusa-san although we’ve gotten acquainted more recently,” NinjaSho explained. “Speaking of, we should start the stream. I’m going to join the call with Kenma. It is in a server so some other people might join but I don’t actually know.”

Atsumu watched the light of the monitors wash over NinjaSho’s face, admiring the slope of his nose and his cheekbones and his jaw in the glow.

“Kenma!” He cheered.

“Hi,” Kenma’s softer voice filtered through Atsumu’s laptop speakers. He vaguely knew who Kenma was because of Bokuto, who was best friends with Kenma’s boyfriend. “I think you should start by introducing yourself.”

It looks like some people are stopping their lurking now that I’m exposing my past. Suga-san was my upperclassman in high school! He was a third year when I was a first year. We played volleyball together!”

“Aw, thank you!” NinjaSho beamed. “Okay, okay. Hi, you guys know me as NinjaSho or Sho but my name is Hinata Shoyo. The Sho is just a nickname and the Ninja part came from what the locals in Brazil called me when I played beach there.”

“It was so hard to switch to calling him Sho. I always just said Shoyo before.” Kenma complained.

“Yeah, Kenma has never called me by my last name either. We started our friendship on first name basis,” Shoyo nodded and Atsumu was so happy to have a proper name to put to his face instead of calling him NinjaSho like a weirdo. “You guys can call me Shoyo if you want, or Hinata, or Sho or my user. I don’t really mind.”

“Are you going to talk about the volleyball?” Kenma asked.

“Tobio said he didn’t want me to without him here. He’s convinced I’ll slander him and ruin his reputation as the number one setter and server in the League.”

Atsumu held back a scoff, he was barely above Atsumu. This was ridiculous.

“Hello?” Another voice appeared in the call, this one stifling a yawn.

“Tobio!” Shoyo greeted, brightening up. “You’re right on time!”

“Did you guys not see our conversations on Twitter? Tobio and I have known each other for a very long time,” Shoyo explained. “We were both first years at the same high school, which I probably shouldn’t say the name of but I feel like I might leak it somehow. It would be so easy for you guys to find out.”

“Don’t think it matters if you don’t go there anymore, dumbass,” Kageyama grumbled. “Who’s going all the way to Miyagi just for a high school. Speaking of Miyagi –”

“Yes! I’ve been thinking about Tokyo, I know!” Shoyo interrupted. “I’m… more likely than not moving there. Probably. Still need to find somewhere to live.”

“Volleyball.” Kenma reminded them.

“Oh, right. Anyways, yeah… Tobio and I were in the same year at high school. We were actually borderline enemies at first but then we got better. He was my setter all through high school!” Shoyo rambled, leaning his chin on the palm of his hand.

“And then…?”

“And then after graduation, he joined the Adlers right away and I took a year off before I went to train beach volleyball in Brazil. The plan for after that was to join the pro league but… uhm… due to some personal stuff happening, I stepped back from volleyball and I ended up streaming instead!” A look of melancholy and sadness flashed over Shoyo’s face and Atsumu frowned.

“Yeah, I don’t feel comfortable talking about why I stopped playing here on the internet. It’s kind of personal,” He shrugged. “I do still play sometimes, but not professionally. It’s just for fun sometimes. Sometimes Tobio sets for me, sometimes on a rare occasion I can get Kenma to set for me.”

“Yeah, Kenma sets for me sometimes. But it’s rare and it’s never more than 10,” Shoyo laughed. “Oh yeah, you guys don’t know Kenma also played.”

“It’s in the past,” Kenma grumbled. “I played in high school. Shoyo and I met when he was a first year and I was a second year. I played setter. But I stopped after high school because going pro was a lot of effort and I did not want to put that effort in. So, I started streaming. I sponsored Shoyo when he was in Brazil.”

“He did!” Shoyo nodded fervently.

“Shoyo knows a lot of setters,” Kageyama mused. “That’s interesting.”

That made Atsumu feel a little jealous, he wouldn’t lie. He wanted to be one of those setters but he wanted to be more special.

“Oh, that’s a fair point. There’s you two, and Akaashi-san. He’s a manga editor by the way, chat. Also Oikawa-san, who plays for San Juan in the Argentinian League, and Suga-san of course. Who else?” Shoyo mused.

“Kogane.” Kageyama murmured.

“Oh true. I need to catch up with him soon,” Shoyo nodded. “He plays for the Sendai Frogs, chat. One of my old teammates from high school is also there, Tsukishima. He’s their middle blocker.”

“Mad Dog-chan from Aoba Johsai is their opposite hitter.” Kageyama added.

“He knows a lot,” Kenma replied to the chatter. “Like there’s so many people from so many teams. We wouldn’t be able to list them all.”

“They’re all people we played against or with during high school,” Shoyo said. “I stayed in touch with most of them.”

They spent the rest of the stream telling stories about their high school days and Atsumu listened to everything intently, feeling disappointment brewing in his stomach when Shoyo announced he was ending the stream.

Luckily it was a Sunday, meaning Atsumu had the day off from training and while he would normally be out at the gym or jogging, today was different. This was because he wanted to watch Shoyo’s stream. He clicked the link in the tweet and also bookmarked it so it would always be there for easy access and settled back to watch.

The same Starting Soon screen was displayed on the stream and then it disappeared to show someone’s blurry collarbones. The camera pulled back to reveal a beaming Shoyo and he was dressed in a pale blue shirt with some sort of track jacket thrown over it.

“Hi!” He waved at the camera and Atsumu remembered their conversation, smiling at his screen and grabbing his phone to text Shoyo. He could see the ginger had his phone in his other hand with his own channel pulled up so he could read the chat on the go.

He saw the notification appear on the screen and saw Shoyo’s eyes widen as he tilted his phone away from the camera, his cheeks flushing slightly. He cleared his throat and lifted the camera higher. “Fit check!” He showed off the slightly ripped jeans he was wearing and the trainers on his feet. “Nothing too fancy.”

“Are you going to introduce us?” A feminine voice came from behind the camera and Shoyo laughed, flipping the camera around to show a pretty blonde woman dressed in pastels. She waved to the camera and beamed. “Hi!”

“This is Yacchan! Yachi Hitoka to you all. She was our manager for high school volleyball for our second and third years mainly,” Shoyo flipped the camera back at himself. “I think we would have been done for had it not been for her.”

“He’s right!” Yachi called, giggling slightly.

“Tadashi’s also here but he’s… I don’t know where he is.” Shoyo admitted.

“Okay! I get it, Tsukishima! I’m sure he’s fine. We’re still at my place, he’s fine,” Shoyo rolled his eyes. “So you can find time to watch the stream but not to come join us? You’re in Sendai, you have no excuse.”

“You suck,” Shoyo sighed. “Anyways, the second Tadashi is here, I’ll introduce you and then we can head out and tour the area!”

“All of Miyagi?” Yachi asked.

“Of course not. I said a mini Miyagi tour, meaning around here and maybe the area around my parents’ house. School? Places from high school,” Shoyo explained and then there was suddenly the sound of a door slamming. “Was that Tadashi?”

“I think so.” Yachi whispered back.

“SHOYO? ARE YOU LIVE?” Someone’s voice called.

“YEAH, WE’RE LIVE!” Shoyo called back. “Yeah, that’s Tadashi. See, Tsukishima, he’s fine. I told you he was.”

“Thank you,” Shoyo sighed in relief. “Putting your personal life and friends on the Internet is kind of scary, so thanks for being so chill guys.”

“Oh, Tadashi’s here.”

“Hi.” Yamaguchi greeted from behind Shoyo and he lifted the camera to get both of them in the shot. Yamaguchi looked to be the same age as Shoyo and Yachi and he had dark hair with a tinge of green and a smattering of freckles spread across his cheeks.

“This is Yamaguchi Tadashi. We met in first year too. Us three, Tobio and Tsukishima were in the same grade. Tadashi is a great pinch server and he was our captain in third year with me as his vice-captain!” Shoyo introduced.

“You flatter me, I don’t even play professionally.” Yamaguchi laughed; his cheeks flushed.

“Only Tobio and Tsukishima do out of everyone who was on the team in our first year actually. Tobio is in the Adlers, as I’m sure you know…” he directed to the camera. “And Tsukishima is on the Sendai Frogs like I said in that stream I did with Kenma and Tobio. Same team as Kogane and Mad Dog-chan.”

“No one knows what you mean when you say Mad Dog-chan.” Yachi giggled.

“He means Kyotani.” Yamaguchi clarified.

“Oh. Yeah,” Shoyo laughed and Atsumu’s heart clenched at how wonderful his laugh was. “Sorry, Oikawa-san always called him that so it kind of stuck.”

“We should get going, shouldn’t we?” Yachi suggested. “We won’t be in trouble right? As in… people won’t try to come find us, will they?”

Shoyo angled the camera away from Yamaguchi and focussed it solely on himself. “Alright, listen chatters… please don’t go out of your way to come and find us, if you happen to come across us then that’s totally fine but don’t leave your homes specifically to find us because frankly that’s a little weird and stalkerish.”

Shoyo looked at his phone as it buzzed once more and then tossed a thumbs up at the screen with a smile and Atsumu knew it was a response to him. He exhaled in relief. “Okay! Let’s go! I’m gonna hide the camera a little as we leave because I don’t want my home to be leaked.”

“I will not die, Tobio. Shut up.” Shoyo mumbled, the camera pressed close to his shirt as they left the apartment and the building. He waited until they had walked several streets away before lifting the camera up once more. Yachi was shown to be standing on one side while Yamaguchi was on his other side.

“Safe zone!” Yamaguchi smiled. “We’re far enough away from Hinata’s place now!”

“Yippee!” Yachi cheered.

“Where to first?” Shoyo asked. “We could go to our high school. It’s a weekend so no one will be there so we can just show you the outside.”

“Sure!” The other two nodded.

“Let’s go then!” Shoyo beamed. “By the way, don’t come to this school or this area to try and find me because I’m moving to Tokyo soon so there’s no point. I’m not gonna say when I’m moving but you’ll know because you’ll see my setup has changed.”

Plus there’s way more to do in terms of streaming and stuff in Tokyo.”

Shoyo snorted and both Yachi and Yamaguchi sent him questioning looks. “Sorry,” He chuckled. “Someone’s watching the stream and texting me at the same time. It’s a little funny. To reply to you, yes I’ve seen matches. Some of the earlier ones when Bokuto-san joined and then a couple when Sakusa-san joined too. You wouldn’t have been able to tell I was there, I covered up my hair because I was with Kenma and he was well known by then.”

“We went to Nationals every year. We went to the Spring Tournament in my first year ‘cause we didn’t make it to the Interhigh. We got to the quarterfinals. In my second year we also didn’t make Interhigh but in the Spring we made it and got to the third round. And in my final year we made it to the semi-finals of the Spring Tournament and ended up third in the country.” Shoyo explained.

“Third in the country in our final year felt surreal.” Yamaguchi’s eyes widened.

“I don’t know how many of you have kept up with high school volleyball so you probably won’t know the name of our school but I went to Karasuno,” Shoyo grinned. That name was vaguely familiar to Atsumu but he knew Inarizaki had never played them, he knew that for sure.

“Shoyo was crying when the match ended.” Yachi teased.

“So were you!” Shoyo defended himself.

“Yeah, I was. And so was Tadashi. All three of us were crying.” She giggled.

“I can see the school!” Yamaguchi changed the subject and Shoyo huffed out a laugh as he flipped the camera around to reveal a building at the end of the road. “There it is!”

The rest of the stream carried on similarly, with the trio showing off places they frequented in high school such as the convenience shop where their own high school volleyball coach worked when he wasn’t coaching. They stopped by to see Tanaka and Kiyoko as well and then ended the stream sitting in a restaurant with a hot meal and a wave goodbye.

After a brief call with Kita, Atsumu feltcalmer and he had received assurance that his outfit was, in fact, not stupid looking like he had convinced himself it was earlier. Shoyo texted him not too long ago to confirm what time his train would arrive in Tokyo so he could come pick him up at the station and with that sorted, he headed off to the station.

The journey was two and a half hours, and at first Shoyo had protested, saying he couldn’t possibly subject Atsumu to that long in a train just to take him out and that he should come to Osaka instead but Atsumu waved it off saying he would rather avoid running into people he knew and having them tease him because they all “love to hate him”.

In the end, Shoyo caved and Atsumu found himself seated on a comfortable seat with a pair of headphones and the Jackals’ most recent match pulled up on his phone, ready to watch and analyse everything. Before he even knew it, the train was pulling into Tokyo and Atsumu looked up, nudging his headphones off, and sticking them in his bag.

Atsumu kept an eye out for a Kageyama poster and just like Shoyo said, he was stood right under it. Atsumu’s lips quirked up when he caught sight of Shoyo leaned against the wall beside the poster, his attention on his phone. Shoyo looked up just as Atsumu started heading his way and his lips turned up in a massive grin as he pocketed his phone and stepped forward.

The setter opened his arms when he was close enough and Shoyo wrapped his own around Atsumu’s middle. “Hi.” Shoyo’s voice was muffled as he tucked his chin against Atsumu’s shoulder.

“Hi,” Atsumu laughed softly, squeezing him back. “Ya give good hugs.”

“I could say the same about you.”

Atsumu lets go of Shoyo, albeit hesitantly. He said he wanted to take Shoyo out and that was exactly what he was going to do.

Atsumu didn’t think he could like Shoyo more but today had proved him wrong. He hadn’t enjoyed himself this much with something other than volleyball in what felt like a decade. Shoyo seemed to match his energy for everything and even though he didn’t play volleyball anymore, he still had the same enthusiasm and passion for it as Atsumu did and he was more than happy to discuss matches and techniques and such.

“Would ya ever let me set ta ya?” Atsumu had asked over dinner.

“Not right now but I’m sure eventually I’d be okay with that,” Shoyo nodded with a small smile. “What made you ask?”

“Ya seem so passionate about volleyball, I’ve always wanted ta play with people who love it as much as I do, an’ the only other person who I can think of like that is Tobio-kun, but I can’t exactly set ta the other setter, can I?”

“You’re not saying that because you watched my matches and want to replicate a certain quick?” Shoyo’s tone turned teasing.

“I am sayin; this with full honesty, I haven’t watched any of yer matches. I didn’t know if ya’d want me ta,” Atsumu shrugged. “None of the high school ones, an’ none of the Brazil ones.”

“Do you want to watch them?” Shoyo raised an eyebrow. “I could show you our semi-final match in my third year. It was against Itachiyama.”

“Of course I want ta see them! I want ta see any an’ every match I can get my hands on!” Atsumu’s eyes widened and he leaned closer. “Yer sure though?”

“I’m sure. Wouldn’t offer if I wasn’t.”

A few minutes later saw Atsumu had moved to the other side of the table to sit beside Shoyo, who pulled his phone out of his jacket pocket and found a recording of the match, holding his phone between the two and pretending he couldn’t feel how close Atsumu was to him. As soon as him and Kageyama did the freak quick, he could see Atsumu’s eyes widen and he paused the recording.

“What – what was that?” Atsumu whispered. “How did ya –”

“They liked to call that the freak quick. Tobio used to tell me to use my highest speed and highest jump, and he would get the ball to me wherever I was.” Shoyo explained.

“Oh my god, that is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” Atsumu’s voice was dripping in awe. “How come I’ve never seen Tobio-kun do that in the pro leagues?”

“No clue. I know he’s tried doing it with people but it never works like ours did,” Shoyo shrugged. “I do miss hitting that. The feeling I felt every time after I hit a spike like that, it’s unparalleled.”

Their evening ended with Shoyo accompanying Atsumu to the train station in the dark as he was headed back to Osaka. “Tell me when yer back in Tokyo, yeah? I’ll take ya out again.” Atsumu breathed, hugging Shoyo.

“What if I wanted to take you out?”

“I would be honoured,” Atsumu smiled softly, pulling away from the hug. “Whenever yer in Tokyo, I want a message okay?”

“I might be coming to Osaka sometime soon too, not sure when. Got a trip with Kenma,” Shoyo murmured. “Maybe I’ll come watch a game.”

“You have ta tell me then! I gotta play ta impress!” Atsumu whined playfully.

“You always impress me with your playing, idiot.”

“Aw, Sho, ya’ll make me blush,” Atsumu flushed. “Okay, I gotta go or I’ll miss my train.”

“Text me when you’re home, okay? I’ll still be up, might join Kenma’s stream.”

“Yeah, I’ll text ya. Or call ya?” Atsumu looked a little unsure.

“You can call me.” Shoyo laughed, nodding a confirmation.

“Okay, I’ll call ya later.” Atsumu said softly, pulling away from Shoyo and going to step away but his wrist was caught by a slightly smaller hand and he was yanked back only to find a pair of lips pressed against his cheek and then Shoyo pulled away, let go of him and stepped back to wave, leaving Atsumu to wave back, dumbfounded and walk to his train with bright red cheeks and a dazed look in his eyes.

Atsumu came to pick Shoyo and Kenma up from the train station and the second he saw Shoyo, he wrapped his arms around him in a tight hug.

“If you’re going to be like this the entire time, then I’m just going to kill myself.” Kenma deadpanned.

“Kenma, you and Kuroo-san are like this and you don’t see me complaining.” Shoyo rolled his eyes, pulling away from the hug and instead lacing his fingers with Atsumu who bit back the massive beam threatening to take over his face.

“I… rescind my previous statement,” Kenma said after a short pause. “Nice to meet you Atsumu, I’m Kenma.”

“Nice ta meet ya too, Kenma! I know who ya are, not just from everythin’ Shoyo tells me. I hear a decent amount from Bok-kun too.” Atsumu chuckled lightly.

“Oh, great.” Kenma groaned.

“Are ya guys stayin’ close ta here?” Atsumu asked as they started heading out of the station. “Like do I call fer a taxi?”

“Nah, it’s walking distance.” Shoyo waved him off.

“Shoyo, your walking distance and my walking distance are not the same,” Kenma whined, dragging his feet. “I won’t make it.”

“You want a piggyback?” Shoyo offered, holding his bag out to Atsumu who took it and slung it over his shoulder.

“Are you sure?” The look on Kenma’s face changed to a slightly concerned one.

“Yeah, ‘s fine,” Shoyo assured him, bending over slightly to let Kenma climb onto his back and wrap his arms around his neck. “Sho Express!” Kenma huffed out a little laugh.

“How often do you go to the gym?” Atsumu asked Shoyo curiously as they walked down the street.

“Every other day but I go jogging every morning and I do yoga every morning too. Something I picked up in Brazil and it’s stuck ever since.” Shoyo said.

“He’s insane,” Kenma sighed. “Although I guess I can’t really say that to you, considering you’re a professional athlete, and you probably do the same if not worse.”

The hotel wasn’t too far and soon enough they were in the lobby of the hotel, Shoyo setting Kenma down and flopping down onto a sofa in the lobby. Atsumu stood beside him, running his fingers through the messy ginger curls as the younger made a sound of content.

“Hey, I got the keys,” Kenma came back with two keycards and handed one of them to Shoyo. “We got rooms right next to each other. They’ll bring our bags up so that’s dealt with.”

“Are ya guys not hungry?” Atsumu asked.

“I’m tired, gonna go to bed,” Kenma shook his head. “Shoyo?”

“I could go for some food.” Shoyo nodded, standing. A faint expression of pain flashed over his face but it disappeared so quickly Atsumu thought he imagined it.

“You’re sure you’re not too tired?” Kenma asked.

“Mhm. I’m sure, don’t worry ‘bout me,” Shoyo assured him. Kenma nodded and waved before heading to the elevators. “Where to?”

Atsumu led them to a ramen place he knew that wasn’t too far from their hotel and soon enough, they were settled into a corner of the fairly empty restaurant, lit with dim lamps enveloping them in a cosy atmosphere. Atsumu talked about the most recent Jackals match, showing Shoyo some footage on his phone and getting his opinion on some things.

Soon enough, their bowls were empty and they were walking out of the place. They were about half way back when Shoyo stumbled, his hand reaching out to brace himself against the wall of the building beside them. “Sho?” Atsumu’s called, alarm in his tone, wrapping one of his arms around Shoyo’s waist to support him.

“Fuck.” Shoyo hissed under his breath, his knees buckling under him.

“Woah –”Atsumu’s eyes widened and he lowered Shoyo so he was sitting with his back leaned against the wall and his legs stretched out in front of him while Atsumu was crouched in front of him, one of his hands placed on one of Shoyo’s calves and the other bracing himself on the ground. “Sho? Ya… are ya okay?”

“Sorry,” Shoyo lifted his eyes up to meet Atsumu’s. “Didn’t think this was how you’d find out.”

“Find out?”

“I – I said there was a personal reason I stopped playing volleyball, didn’t I? And – and I was going to tell you but I just – I didn’t know how, you know?” Shoyo rambled. “Which is stupid really because… because I’m basically over it, right? So –”

“Shoyo, hey, easy. It’s okay,” Atsumu murmured, dropping to his knees, and shuffling so he was beside Shoyo, grabbing his shoulder and tugging him against his chest, arms wrapped around him tightly. He could feel Shoyo’s hands reach up behind him and fist his jacket as a shaky breath escaped the ginger’s mouth. “It’s okay, ya don’t need ta work yerself up over this or give reasons fer things.”

“Okay.” Shoyo whispered into Atsumu’s hoodie.

“An’ ya don’t need ta tell me if ya don’t feel comfortable doin’ it,” Atsumu pulled away and cupped Shoyo’s cheeks with both of his hands, his fingers brushing away the tears gathered at the corners of his eyes. “Okay?”

“I want to tell you.” Shoyo said.

“Then, I promise I’ll listen ta everythin’ ya have ta say,” Atsumu assured him, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Do ya want ta do that here though? Or do ya want ta go back ta yer hotel room?”

“I can’t walk back.” Shoyo shook his head.

“I can carry ya,” Atsumu wasted no time in offering. “Think of it as weight trainin’.”

Shoyo huffed out a tired laugh. “If you’re sure.”

“’Course I’m sure,” Atsumu stood, holding one of his hands out to Shoyo. “Come on.” Shoyo took his hand and Atsumu heaved him up before crouching down slightly to let Shoyo climb onto his back.

“Be… be careful around my right knee.” Shoyo murmured as he wrapped his arms around Atsumu’s neck and rested his head on his Sholder.

“Okay.”

When they were back at the hotel and in Shoyo’s hotel room, Atsumu lowered Shoyo down onto the bed gently before taking a seat beside him and taking one of his hands, lacing their fingers together and brushing his thumb over the others knuckles.

“So…” Shoyo took a deep breath and exhaled it shakily.

“It’s just me, Sho.” Atsumu said softly.

“Mhm, yeah,” There was a slight pause. “Uhm… so you know I went to Brazil a year after graduation so I could train in beach and get… better. The plan was to spend two years there and then come back and join a pro team. Actually had my eyes on the Jackals.” He huffed out a laugh.

“No way?”

“Yes way. Anyways, uh… yeah, two years. It was really hard being away from home, having to learn an entirely new language and also train basically from the basics. It got easier sure but there were times when shit seriously sucked,” Shoyo sighed. “It was looking really good though, I was getting really recognised in the circuits and I had a great partner. Even went to his wedding.”

“That’s really cool.”

“Yeah, yeah it was. Maybe two months or so before I was supposed to come back to Japan I fucked up my knee really bad. Bad enough that the doctor said if I kept playing volleyball it would mean I’d never be able to use that leg properly at some point.”

“Sho…” Atsumu’s eyes widened.

“Volleyball was my life; it still is such a big part of my life. And to have something that important to me get taken away… I was in a really rough spot for those last two months in Brazil and the first couple months when I came back to Japan. Kenma was the one who suggested streaming as something to get my mind off it. And then I made YouTube videos too, and people liked it and I found something that I liked doing.

“But I could never play professionally. And I have bad days sometimes. When it rains, my knee gets kind of stiff and I gotta limp everywhere or use a stupid crutch. Usually don’t leave the house on days like those. I can push myself too hard sometimes too, which is what happened today, ‘cause I carried Kenma after sitting still on a train for ages. I still play volleyball on occasion, for fun. When Tobio comes to visit, he sets for me sometimes. He never does the freak quick though… I think he might be scared of hurting me,” Shoyo whispered the last part. “Or maybe he’s afraid we’ll do it and… and it’ll make me sad because I can’t do that anymore.”

“Oh, Shoyo.” Atsumu whispered, tugging the shorter boy to his chest, and resting his cheek on his head, squeezing him. “I can’t imagine how that must feel, so thank ya for tellin’ me. It means a lot ta me.”

“’Course I’d tell you.” Shoyo’s voice was muffled by the fabric of Atsumu’s shirt.

“Hey,” Atsumu pulled away and looked at Shoyo, eyes gleaming. “Be my boyfriend.”

“Wh –” Shoyo’s eyes widened.

“I was gonna wait an’ take ya ta a nice place for dinner ta ask ya, maybe after we won our game or somethin’ so I’d be ridin’ on this high of victory, an’ I would feel confident enough ta ask ya, because honestly I get so fuckin; nervous around yoa, I’ve never felt this way about someone ever before, an’ I –”

He was cut off by Shoyo’s lips on his and his hand cupping Atsumu’s now flushed cheek, his fingers brushing against his cheekbone before they dragged all the way back to his nape, threading through the hairs at the base of his neck. Shoyo pulled away from him before leaning back in to plant a kiss, then another and then he pulled back fully.

“Yes.” He said, lips curving up.

“Yes?” Atsumu’s eyes widened.

“Yeah. What, you expected a no?”

“No! I just –” Atsumu shrugged. “Never been this inta someone I guess.”

“Yeah? Me neither,” Shoyo grinned, pressing another kiss to Atsumu’s lips. “You want to spend the night? Just spend the night, Atsumu.”

“Of course I want ta spend the night,” Atsumu looked offended at the question. “I have trainin’ tomorrow though an’ no clothes.”

“Easy solutions,” Shoyo said nonchalantly. “You can borrow something of mine to sleep in, as for training tomorrow. We get up around the same time, I’ll come with you.”

“Ya think ya’ll be allowed inta trainin’?” Atsumu asked.

“I’ll come with you to your dorm. See Bokuto-san and Sakusa-san, then I’ll go on a jog, then I got some stuff to do with Kenma. I’ll come to your game the day after though, I’ll vlog it. We could do an IRL stream that day too! After the game maybe?” Shoyo said, looking excited.

“That all sounds absolutely incredible.”

Shoyo needed help standing so he could get changed but it wasn’t long until they were laid on the bed in the middle of the room, Shoyo with his head resting on Atsumu’s chest and Atsumu’s arms wrapped around him.

“Hey, are ya goin’ ta tell the internet about us?” Atsumu asked, his voice low.

“It doesn’t really matter to me whether they know or not I guess. What if we didn’t say anything but we didn’t hide it either? If they figure it out, they figure it out you know?”

“Sounds like it would end in a lot of chaos. I’m so down fer that.”

Both of them were grinning as they walked down the street the following morning, hands linked and swinging between them. Shoyo had no idea where the Jackals dorms were so he was just following Atsumu.

“I feel like I should warn ya but ya already know both of them so I don’t know how effective a warnin’ is,” Atsumu paused just as he was about to open the door. “They’ll have so many questions about why I didn’t come back last night.”

“It’s the thought that counts. Maybe seeing me will answer those questions.” Shoyo shrugged.

“Or bring up new ones,” Atsumu sighed, sticking his key into the keyhole, and unlocking the door. He pushed the door open and flicked the light switch on, bathing the living room and kitchen area in a gentle glow. “No one’s awake yet apparently.”

“Go get changed. I’ll look through your kitchen.” Atsumu pressed a kiss to Shoyo’s cheek before disappearing into one of the rooms in the dorm, leaving Shoyo to his own devices in the middle of the dorm. He stifled a yawn and ambled over to the kitchen, looking through the fridge and sighing in disappointment when he saw how empty it was. For a household of three professional athletes, they sure as hell didn’t have the food to sustain them.

“Miya?” Someone’s voice sounded from behind Shoyo and he whirled around, closing the fridge.

“Atsumu’s getting changed in his room.”

“Hinata-kun?” It was Sakusa Kiyoomi, dressed in athletic gear, just leaving his own room.

“Morning Sakusa-san!” Shoyo beamed. “Sorry for barging in like this, I said I’d walk Atsumu back because I was going jogging anyways so might as well.”

“No, it’s – it’s fine. Just wasn’t expecting to see you until the game tomorrow.” Sakusa shook his head.

“Yeah, me neither honestly. But… things happen, you know,” Shoyo shrugged, laughing lightly. “Oh! Speaking of the game tomorrow, I was thinking I would do an IRL stream after the game, we could all go and get drinks or something to eat maybe, but I wanted to ask if you’d be okay with that because it is live…”

“I don’t fully understand all of this streaming stuff, to be honest.” Sakusa admitted, walking closer to sit at the kitchen island.

“I don’t mind explaining it to you!” Shoyo beamed. “We might have to wait until Bokuto-san is awake though, because I want to ask him about this too!”

“Did I hear my name?” Bokuto’s door slammed open and there he was. “HINATA!”

“Bokuto-san! Hello!” Shoyo laughed. “Nice to see you after so long.”

“Bok-kun, yer goin’ ta put a hole in the wall if ya keep slammin’ yer door like that,” Atsumu also opened his door, stepping out in training gear just like the other two. “Sho, I’ll bring the hoodie with me tomorrow, ya can grab it then, yeah?”

“Keep it.” Shoyo waved it off.

“Did I miss something?” Bokuto asked, still standing in the doorway of his room.

“I believe I have also missed something,” Sakusa added, looking back and forth between the couple. “Miya, why exactly did you not come home last night?”

“He spent the night with me,” Shoyo explained. “Just spent the night, Bokuto-san, before you get ahead of yourself.”

“Thank you for clarifying,” Bokuto nodded, closing his door, and joining Sakusa at the island. Atsumu shut his own door and went to lean on the counter beside Shoyo. “Anything else happen?”

“Yeah, we’re datin’ now.” Atsumu said with a nod.

“Really?” Bokuto’s eyes widened as he gasped. “That’s wonderful!”

“Mhm, could have happened under better circumstances than my fucking knee giving out, but it is what it is.” Shoyo shrugged.

“Is your knee okay? Did you strain it too much?” Sakusa questioned.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. It was stiff from the train ride then I gave Kenma a piggyback and it just gave up on me later. All good, Atsumu gave me a piggyback to the hotel.” Shoyo sighed.

“Atsumu knows?” Sakusa asked.

“Yeah, told him last night,” Shoyo nodded. “Bokuto-san knew way back when it first happened because I stayed in touch with him all through high school and after, and I told Sakusa-san when we became good friends.”

“So, the stream…” Sakusa turned the subject back.

“Right!” Shoyo nodded. “Bokuto-san, Sakusa-san, I was just wondering if you’d be okay being in my stream tomorrow after the game. I was thinking I’d IRL stream and we could go get drinks or food after the game and stuff.”

“Sure!” Bokuto beamed.

“Sakusa-san, basically IRL streaming is just streaming outside of my set up in my house or someone else’s set up, so me outside in the city and stuff like that. I have a backpack and a camera with it that lets me stream outside so I was just going to use that. just wanted to make sure you were okay with it because it’ll be live which means everything that I record on the camera is broadcasted at that exact moment to whoever is watching.” Shoyo explained.

“Do I have to be on the camera all the time?” Sakusa asked.

“No, of course not. Camera will be on me most of the time, except some moments but I can keep the camera away from you if you want.”

“Then it’s fine with me.” Sakusa nodded.

“Awesome!” Shoyo grinned. “Okay, I have to go on my jog and then meet up with Kenma for business stuff. I probably won’t be able to see you guys today but I’ll definitely be at the game tomorrow!”

“Take care, call me later.” Atsumu said softly, leaning down to brush a kiss to Shoyo’s forehead before the shorter waved to the three Jackals and disappeared out of the dorm.

Atsumu had secured them seats with a really good view and they were even sat with Akaashi, who was there to see Bokuto, of course. Shoyo had the time of his life, watching the game. He always enjoyed watching games, even if he couldn’t play himself anymore.

The Jackals won 3-1 and Kenma now had a video of Shoyo leaping to his feet after they took their third set, cheering loudly.

“We won!” Atsumu cheered, accepting the hug Shoyo offered and kissing his cheek as well. “It’s because ya were there ta cheer us on!"

"Sure, we can say that," Shoyo laughed, pulling away. “I have my camera and everything ready to start the stream.”

“This is excitin;, I’ve never been on a stream? In a stream?” Atsumu grinned. “Whatever it is, this’ll be fun.”

“IRL streaming is exhausting,” Kenma groaned. “What if people recognise us and come up to us in the street?”

“I’ll give a warning just like last time, but other than that there’s not much we can do,” Shoyo sighed, shrugging. “Okay, let’s start this.”

“Do you want to introduce yourself?” Shoyo flipped the camera back to himself, showing how he was grinning.

“I would love ta,” The person’s body can be seen moving next to Shoyo but their face still isn’t visible until Shoyo tilts the camera up to reveal Atsumu. “Hi, I’m Miya Atsumu.”

“Uhhh…” Shoyo gave a helpless look to Atsumu who shrugged. “I don’t know… they should be here soon though?”

“Do you… want to?” Shoyo asked someone else.

“I’m… not opposed to it. But only for a little.” Came the response.

“Sure, no worries,” Shoyo nodded and flipped the camera to another man standing there beside Atsumu. “Guys, this is Sakusa-san! He’s also on the Jackals! Three Jackals here right now, wow this is kind of cool!”

“Hey.” Sakusa waved.

“Sakusa-san probably won’t be on camera as much as everyone else, so don’t ask for him to be on camera. He’ll pop up if he wants to, okay?” Shoyo said to the chat, flipping the camera back and pointing a finger at it threateningly. “Also, once more, please don’t leave your homes and come to find us specifically, it’s fine if we run into each other but don’t go out of your way to come look for it.”

“It’s weird and borderline stalkerish. We would have your face on camera and I’ll go to the police. Shoyo has contacts.” Kenma added.

“I don’t have contacts! I know a policeman. A singular one!” Shoyo spluttered.

“You know a policeman?” Bokuto questioned.

“Bokuto-san… Daichi-san is a policeman,” Shoyo explained and Bokuto made a sound of realisation. “Daichi-san was our volleyball captain in my first year in high school. He was a third year. We’re still in contact, I talk with most of the people I went to high school with and chat have met Tadashi and Yacchan.”

Three weeks of constant texting and video calling and Atsumu watching every single one of Shoyo’s streams, even if he was at the gym. He would just prop his phone up in front of him to watch it, subjecting himself to relentless teasing from his teammates but he didn’t really care.

Soon enough, Atsumu decided three weeks was long enough and he knew they got some time off for the winter break so he made sure his entire schedule was cleared, then he booked a train ticket to Tokyo and packed a bag.

A week later and he was getting off the train at Tokyo with Shoyo’s address pulled up on his phone. Despite him having been to Tokyo several times to see him, he had never actually visited his place. The address wasn’t too far from the station and he could take the subway to it quite easily, which was exactly what he did.

Shoyo and Kenma lived in a building quite close to the centre of town, meaning Atsumu was surrounded by big skyscrapers and lots of lights and sound when he left the subway station. He checked the address once more and walked to the right building, sighing as he stepped into the warm lobby away from the coldness outside. He wouldn’t be surprised if it started snowing in a few days as the weather grew even colder.

Thankfully, he also knew which floor and flat number Shoyo occupied, so he took the elevator up and was soon enough stood outside a door that had a cat-patterened welcome mat. The flat a few doors down had a crow patterned one and Atsumu guessed that was probably Kenma’s place.

A deep breath in, and then he rang the doorbell.

“Coming!” Shoyo’s voice rang from inside and Atsumu could hear footsteps approaching the door before it swung open to reveal his boyfriend standing right there. Shoyo was dressed in a faded old shirt and a pair of pyjama pants, his hair adorably messy and a popsicle stick in his mouth that he tugged out as his eyes widened in shock at the sight of Atsumu.

“Hi.” Atsumu smiled.

“Atsumu…” Shoyo breathed, cupping his cheek. “Wha – how are you here?”

“Surprise!” He beamed, eyes widening as he was tugged closer and then Shoyo was kissing him. There was a lingering taste of something quite citrusy on his lips and his hair felt so soft as Atsumu threaded his fingers through it. “Ya taste nice.” He commented when they pulled away.

“Just finished a popsicle,” Shoyo waved the popsicle stick with a small grin. “Come in, come in!” He moved out of the way to let Atsumu in and as soon as they were both in and the door was shut, Shoyo lunged forward once more to wrap his arms around Atsumu’s middle.

“Hey.” Atsumu whispered softly, hugging him back and pressing kisses to his head.

“Missed you. A lot.”

“I missed ya too.”

A few hours later found them lying in bed together, Shoyo tracing lines on Atsumu’s fingers absent-mindedly.

“Ya don’t have any plans fer the next like… two weeks… do ya?” Atsumu asked.

“I feel like that was something you should have asked before you decided to come here for two weeks.” Shoyo chuckled.

“Listen –”

“I’m going to Miyagi for a few days, to see my mother and Natsu and see everyone from high school too. We all meet up during the winter break.” Shoyo said.

“Oh.”

Shoyo rolled to his side and propped himself up on his elbow, leaning over Atsumu and reaching out to run his fingers down the blond’s cheek. “You could come with me? We’ve always said that if any of us had significant others, they’d be more than welcome. But no one except Tanaka-senpai and Kiyoko-san got to that point and they’re both part of the group so they always come anyways.”

“Are ya sure it’s okay?”

“I’ll ask them in our groupchat if you want?” Shoyo said. “Pass me my phone, it’s on the bedside table beside you.”

Their first week together in Tokyo consisted of sleeping in a tad more than they usually do, before they went on a jog together and occasionally the gym. Upon returning to Shoyo’s flat, they showered, and then Shoyo made them breakfast every day while Atsumu clung onto him from behind. The remainder of the day either consisted of just spending time together indoors or going out somewhere.

Evenings were different however as Shoyo would stream, so Atsumu liked to sit in the living room with his stream open even though he was just a room away. Sometimes he appeared in frame but with his head cut out so no one knew it was him. It was quite funny to see the entire chat freak out, and then freak out even more when one of the VIP’s or one of his friends revealed that they knew who the mystery person was.

“Hinata, we have a surprise for you.” Sugawara said after they had spent a while catching up inside a warm restaurant.

“Really? Just me? How come?” Shoyo tilted his head to the side in confusion.

“Maybe if you waited to see you’d know. Dumbass.” Kageyama quipped.

“Why do you feel the need to insult me every chance you get?” Shoyo groaned, leaning his head against Atsumu’s arm, who chuckled and ruffled his boyfriends hair.

“Gross,” Kageyama shuddered. “Okay, come on. Let’s go.”

They all got up from the restaurant and followed Suga somewhere. As they walked, Shoyo realised they were taking the familiar road to their school. “Why are we –” He broke off and went silent. Atsumu squeezed his hand and Shoyo squeezed back with a small smile.

“We managed to get the gym for a few hours. Just for today. Thought maybe you’d like to spike some balls.” Tanaka said in an uncharacteristically soft voice as they approached the gym and Daichi unlocked it.

Shoyo stood at the door, not stepping in, his eyes wide and his jaw slack. “Oh,” He took a breath in shakily and wiped a hand across his eyes to wipe the tears away. Atsumu tugged him closer for a hug, kissing his forehead, running a hand up and down his back reassuringly. “Thank you.” He said to them all.

“Stop crying and spike some damn balls!” Nishinoya urged, a wicked grin on his face. He walked over to the crate of volleyballs and tossed one over to Shoyo who caught it and spun it in his hands.

“Will you set for me?” He asked Atsumu who’s eyes widened.

“Me? What? But Kageyama –”

“Tobio’s set for me a million times before. You’ve never set for me. Would you?” Shoyo smiled softly.

“Of course I will!” A bright grin appeared on the blond’s face.

“Yacchan!” Shoyo called Yachi and the second she looked over; he threw the ball towards her. “Help us, will you?”

“You got it!” She giggled.

“Start with easy ones first, Hinata!” Sugawara said from where he was setting for Asahi.

“You heard Suga-san!” Shoyo nodded at Atsumu.

Atsumu’s sets were so easy to hit, they curved perfectly and Shoyo hit every single one. They gradually got faster and higher and before Shoyo knew it, he was running as fast as he could and had leapt in the air as high as he could, only realising what he had done when he was mid-air. He fucked up.

But then the ball appeared right where his palm was and then it was slamming down on the other side of the court. Shoyo landed back down with a stumble and looked down at his hand in awe. “I –”

“Was that –” Kageyama’s eyes widened as everyone grew silent.

“Oh my god. You –” Shoyo turned to Atsumu who was just as wide-eyed as him. “YOU DID THE FREAK QUICK WITH ME!”

“It just… happened…” Atsumu whispered.

“Thank you! Thank you!” Shoyo launched himself at Atsumu who caught him and spun him around, the both of them laughing. “I haven’t hit that in years! The feeling never changes! I feel like I’m on top of the world when I hit a spike like that!”
