Work Text:
It was surprising, to say the least when the original seven agreed to Wally’s suggestion. He never thought it would happen; the original seven were going on a road trip, in a camper for a week. It took quite some time to convince everyone, especially Bruce, but with some help from Dick, it was on. (It was right before he proposed to Dick that he had the idea but it was only afterward Bruce had given in.)
——
Wally was packing for the trip when Dick came in.
“Hey, baby girl.” Wally greeted.
“Excited?”
“To be without you for a whole week? No. To be with your dad at the same time? Also No. But, I am excited to go on the trip.”
Dick snorted at that. “Sap”
“Your sap babe.”
Just at that moment, there was a honk and Wally was off. But once he was in the car he forgot something. And raced back into the apartment where Dick was waiting by the couch, he smirked and gave him a loving kiss. And then he was gone again.
Once in the camper, John gave him a questioning look and asked, “What did you forget?” Thinking quick on his feet Wally answered “Oh, just my phone. But I got it.” He grabbed his phone from his pocket waving it in the air. In all actuality, he did forget his phone but Dick was the more important detail.
After they all were settled in, Shiera asked the question in almost everyone’s head “Wally, since when did you live in Blüdhaven?” Wally having his headphones in didn’t hear the question and ignored her completely. John, also wanting the answer to the question, throws his empty soda can at him to get his attention.
“The heck dude? What was that for?” Wally now, very much present in the conversation, asked. “Shiera asked you a question, dimwit.”
“Oh. Sorry, what's up?”
Shiera, somewhat annoyed at the antics asked her question; “How long have you been living in Blüdhaven? You’re centered in Central but we picked you up in Blüd. How come?”
Wally took a moment to process this and answered, “I was just visiting a friend who lives there.” Bruce, who was in the front seat next to Clark who was driving, gave him a knowing look that the rest didn't notice.
After that, they all went back to what they were doing; Bruce and Clark talking to each other, J’ohn, who hadn't moved since they started the trip, stayed the same (Wally guessed he was sleeping), Shiera and John also went back to talking, Diana was still reading her book, and Wally went back on his phone.
——-
About 2 days in, Wally was talking to Clark and Diana about something, but it didn't matter when he got it. A text from Dick, the first one since Wally had left.
D: It's gone. The apartment is gone.
W: What! What happened?
Wally waited for a response, but none came. After that Wally tried calling him but no reply. Thinking it was because of being in the camper he thought quickly, like he was all too good at at this point.
“Bruce pull over,” Wally stated, all mirth from the previous conversation gone.
“Why? Wally, what's wrong?” Clark asked.
“Just do it, Bruce, now!” finally, he complied and pulled over.
Once they were in a safe spot which happened to be in a tiny town. Wally jumped out and started calling Dick. Still no response. Bruce came out to see what the matter was.
“Wally, what's the matter?” and was promptly ignored in favor of what was occupying Wally’s attention.
“Damn it, Dick. Pick up.” Wally muttered to himself. The rest of the leaguers had gotten out at this point, some were worried others were annoyed, one of the annoyed was John, and finally took the phone from the frantic man. Unable to use any powers because of the civilians, Wally couldn't get his phone back.
“John, I swear to all the deities worshiped on Earth, give me my phone back,” Wally growled. Getting weird looks from pedestrians.
“Not until you tell us what has gotten your panties in a twist.”
Wally opened and closed his mouth like a gaping fish. When his phone rang in John's hand.
Before anyone could react Wally got down on the ground and swept John’s feet out from under him. Causing him to fall and drop his phone at the same time. Wally grabbed his phone and immediately answered the phone, leaving the others with faces ranging from anger to awe.
“Dick, I swear. You can’t do that! You text me something like that and don't answer me!” Wally said instead of a greeting. Grabbing the attention of every leaguer present, especially Bruce.
I know babe I’m sorry. I was being questioned by the police. Dick sounded like he was crying.
“ It’s alright, baby girl. I was just worried. What happened? What do you mean the apartment is gone?” This got Bruce worried, the apartment was gone? Was Dick alright? The rest were just confused. Who was this Dick? Why was Wally so worried?
John, still on the pavement, was feeling guilty for taking the phone.
After a moment Dick answered:
Blockbuster. He blew up the apartment. People died because they talked to me, Wally. How am I going to stop him? He is the city, I can't go up against that much. They had families and now they're dead because of me!
Dick was spiraling, Wally knew this, Dick knew this, and Bruce knew this. Bruce, apparently the only one who can read the room, ushered everyone inside the camper and left Wally to this conversation.
Once inside the rest of the leaguers all turned to Bruce for answers. Who was still looking at Wally through the window.
“Who was that, Bruce?” Diana asked after a moment of silence.
“That was Dick. He's my son and Wally’s fiance. He lives in Blüdhaven as a teacher.” Bruce said solemnly.
It took a moment for this to sink in. When eventually the questions came.
“You have a son?”
“Wally’s engaged?”
“What the actual hell?”
When finally J’ohn asked the largest question; “What does your son have to do with Blockbuster?”
After that, the questions stopped and they all waited for the answer. Bruce was about to answer when Wally came inside looking worse for wear and answered for him.
“Dick is the vigilante Nightwing and he's been fighting Blockbuster for the last 2 years. It's gotten worse recently when he found out Dick’s identity. He's been targeting everything and everyone close to Dick.”
“Today was the largest attack and it was on our apartment building. Thankfully Dick was getting groceries at the time but it was too close.”
This left everyone speechless. Wally looked like he was about to cry. When Bruce put a hand on his shoulder and gave him a small smile.
Wally went to his bunk after that. Nobody disturbed him for the rest of the day. The next however was free game.
——-
The next day Wally was more active and more willing to talk about Dick.
Clark was the first person to ask, “ So, how long have you been engaged?”
Wally laughed “3 months. And before you ask, yes I was going to invite you guys.” Successfully stopping the next question.
“Okay, so how come you didn't tell us that a. you have a significant other and b. that the legendary Batman has a son? Mr. ‘I work alone’ and all that crap.” John asked both Wally and Bruce. Wally snorted and Bruce grumbled.
“Batman does not work alone. He has the biggest team of bats. It's funny. Dick is just the oldest of his children.” Wally responded.
“How many children do you have, Bruce?” Diana asked.
“Legally or emotionally?”
“The fact that there's a difference scares me,” John muttered.
“ Legally,” Diana decided.
“6. Plus Wally, Roy, and Bernard.”
“Who are Roy and Bernard?” J’ohn asked.
“Jason’s and Tim’s boyfriends,” Wally answered this time.
“ Jason and Tim are?” Shiera this time.
“The brothers. Do you want to hear the family tree so far?” Wally asked excitedly.
They all nodded.
Wally began, “First there's Dick Grayson, my soon-to-be husband, he was the first sidekick and the first Robin. Then there's Jason Todd who was the second Robin, died then came back as the Red Hood and Roy's boyfriend.” Wally paused so that could let that sink in.
“Then there's Cassandra Wayne, a total badass and was the third bargirl, and now is Orphan. She could sneak up on almost everybody. Then there's Tim Drake, who was the third Robin and now is Red Robin, he is a total genius.” Another pause this time so he can think.
“Duke Thomas is the newest member of the family and is the only meta in the family, he can manipulate light. Then there's Damian Wayne, the only biological son of Bruce, who was raised by the League of Assassins and now is the current Robin.” During the explanation, he pulled out his phone to show them a family photo and pointed to all of them.
For the next few hours, they all talked about Dick and his family.
———
The rest of the trip went smoothly, and it was then final. They were going to end at The Hall of Justice so they could go their separate ways. Wally had texted Dick to come up so they could go home together.
When they pulled up to the Hall, Dick was taking pictures of the flowers with a camera that Wally had found in an old antique shop. To Wally, Dick looked stunning but in reality, he looked as if he hadn’t slept in days. He was wearing a hoodie that was Wally’s from university and some plain jeans, his hair was as wild as always but his eyes weren't as bright, and that worried Wally.
Once Wally exited the camper, Dick looked up and smiled. It wasn’t a relatively large smile but it was there and Wally was happy for it. Wally started walking towards him and once he got there? They hugged each other like they hadn’t seen each other in months.
During all of this, the rest of the seven got their things and we're waiting to meet the infamous Dick. Well most of them were, Bruce just wanted to see if he was okay, he and Wally had talked about Dick the other day, and well they were glad that he had more safe houses and that Tim was willing to stay with him that week. It was also summer break so there wasn’t nearly as much stress on Dick.
After a few moments, the two lovers broke apart and, Dick faced the league, and silently waved to them.
“So you're the infamous Dick, that we've heard so much about,” Shiera said.
“Yes. And it's a pleasure to meet you all.” Dick responded.
“And you. We will all have to meet up soon to talk more but, I’m sure that we’re all tired and wanting to go home. I will take my leave first.” Diana cut in, so they could all go home.
“ Thanks, Diana. We better get going home. It's been a really fun week,” Wally said, placing a hand on Dicks waist, “we should do it again.” He added cheekily.
Everyone groaned at that.
“Not for another 100 years, at least.” John chuckled.
They all went their separate ways after that. Dick and Wally got into the car with Wally in the driver's seat, Dick never really liked driving in a car, it was too easy to zone out, and that made it dangerous, that's why Wally almost always drove when possible.
In the car, they shared one meaningful kiss and set off for one of the more habitable safe houses. They were going to stay there until they could find a new apartment building to live in.
The drive home was silent except for the radio station the couple loved to listen to.
———-
When they got home Wally used his speed to quickly put away his clothing, while Dick settled up a movie for them to watch. They were going to order in since they were both too tired to cook anything.
They ended up watching The Nightmare Before Christmas. The night ended with Dick fast asleep on Wally’s chest. Wally turned off the TV and carefully picked up Dick and brought him to the bed.
Wally was still worried for Dick and where his mental state was. But right now the only thing important was for them to be together. Wally was certain of 2 things, that he loved Dick Grayson and that they could get through any trials together.
Things will get better.
