Chapter 2: [1.1] Republic City.

Chapter Text

Word Counts: 2473 words.

Earth.

Fire.

Air.

Water.

When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang, told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred Year War. Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations, a society where benders and nonbenders from all over the world could live and thrive together in peace and harmony. They named the capital of this great land Republic City. Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life, but sadly, his time in this world came to an end. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew.

“What on spirit are you doing here?!” Lin felt every inch of her body met their boiling point, finding her adopted daughter in her office where she would've been not.

Yue promised her that she would take some time off and rest after her serial series of crimes findings and take-down. Lin is enraged by how fast Yue works, not that she is not proud, Lin is worried that Yue would soon become Equalist most wanted.

“Merely bringing you lunch! Can I not show some sort of affection around here?” Yue scoffed at her adoptive mother. To which made Lin shivers with ick.

“That may work on Tenzin but you know damn well I don’t need any of that!” Lin speaks before she could think, and not even after a second she states it. Lin felt guilty.

“...Look, you’ve done a wonderful job as a police officer and that in my book is more than enough. I just… I just don’t want what happened to Jin happen to you.” Lin spoke in a much more calm tone, she almost whispered even.

“Was he… was he truly killed by Amon then? I’ve looked into it. It made sense.” Yue confessed, her brilliant eyes were beautiful, it’s a shame they're practically useless now.

When Yue said she ‘looked into it’, it means she really thinks about it. Yue has her father’s brain and it never fails to impress Lin.

“Didn’t I say stop doing that? That’s my obsession, it shouldn't be yours.” Lin insisted, making Yue smile.

“I’m sorry… it’s just… I always envy your determination. You always seem to have a purpose where I act merely on what others need.” Yue took her walking stick that she uses mainly for disguise and tapped her metal rod to the ground in a slow tempo.

“Republic city needs its crime rate down and I took it upon myself, and then you told me to take some time off… it feels odd not doing anything.” Yue breathed out and took another weary breath.

“We had this conversation, one, you’re young, so do what youngsters do nowadays and two, you survived my mother. You deserve some rest.” Lin sat down and took a great look at what Yue had prepared for her.

Spirits, Yue can really cook vegetables into divine wonders. Must be because of Penma.

“Fine, I’ll spend my afternoon with Asami then. I think she had another race.” Yue laughs with the voice of her mother, Mirae.

“What are you waiting for then? Get out.” Lin shoo Yue away, wanting to enjoy her lunch with peace.

“Don’t overwork yourself, I’ll cook you that crispy duck you love.” Yue teases, making Lin’s eyes twitch with agony.

“Not another word!”

“Well, that went well.” Asami laughed at my story when I told her how the talk went down with my guardian, Lin Beifong.

“Considering my dense caregiver, it goes as well as it can. How are you doing my friend?” I asked my best friend, Asami Sato.

Asami Sato is the only child of the wealthy industrialist Hiroshi Sato and his late wife, Yasuko Sato, an architect. Although she was born in a luxurious upbringing, Asami is a very kind and genuine woman. From what I could sense, Asami had sharp features that made her look both graceful and elegant. She and I often spar together, training self defense and hand to hand combat as Asami is a capable, more than a decent fighter.

The bond I have with her is almost sisterly as she and I often bond over being an only child, wondering what it would feel like to have a sister.

“I’m doing just fine! How about you Yue? I heard you took some time off, I like that, you’ve been working hard.” I could practically hear Asami smile based on her rather happy tone.

She never changes, Asami never mind my disability but still often than not worries for me.

“It feels weird to be this relaxed, it feels like a crime.” I confess to making Asami laugh.

“Spirits, you said that too when we first met. I thought you were so intrigued by cars and races when in fact, you were lost and thought a great crime had took place.” Asami reminded me as my mind went back.

“In my defense, cars weren't a thing in a swamp and I’ve never felt so many vibrations in my life. At that time, I had nothing to do from being unemployed, remember?” I bite back and see with vibration that Asami’s smile widens.

“To be this relaxed felt like a crime you said after I told you to calm down.” Asami reminiscent.

“I must’ve looked so out of place then…” I wonder.

“Oh believe me, you stick out like a sore thumb.” Asami added.

“Hmm, who needs a sister when I have a friend as sassy as you.” I exhale as Asami then engulf me in her hug.

Asami always smells like jasmine where I prefer roses like freesia. But we often trade perfumes as scents is one of my ways to familiar myself with my surroundings. Asami has always made blindness easy for me.

“Good to know, so, if you’re free can we have dinner together? I haven’t found a schedule yet but I’ll let you know when I find one.” Asami said, still trapping me in her embrace.

“Then can we go to Kwong’s Cuisine? They often played her songs there.” I requested, mentioning the restaurant habits of playing my mother’s songs.

It’s one of the main ways for me to reconnect with her. I never had the chance to truly know my biological mother, seeing as she was taken too soon. But every memory we share is nothing but endearing. I wonder if one day I could love like how my mother loves me?

“Of course, we can Yue! I like that spot too, but you better try a dress at least once!” Asami now whines.

“...If you agree not to bring this up once more, fine.” I gave in, making Asami incredibly happy.

“Then go out there and start looking. I’ll try to find the time.” Asami finally let me go and stood from the stadium bleachers. “I’ll see you soon then.”

“I’m afraid I can’t, I’m blind.” I smiled.

“Yue!”

“Are you tired of living under the tyranny of benders? Then join the equalist!” I heard someone preach more or less five miles away. I was too caught up with my shopping at hand to hear his other words. But I do hear.

“Join Amon, and together we will tear the bending establishments.” The preacher preaches some more.

Hm, yeah, you lost me at Amon. No thanks, though I doubt they will take interest in some blind woman. At least that's how I act on a daily basis. To those who don't know me, I’m just a blind young woman with her walking metal sticks.

I just want to continue with my life but before I could, someone bumps into me when I had not yet moved. I stayed unswayed but the man who bumps into me fell, bringing my bag with him. Judging by how the earth vibrates around him, my seismic sense tells me he's a young man.

“Oh, my, are you okay?” I asked him, hearing his heartbeats quicken.

“Uh, yeah. My bad I didn’t see where I’m going…” The young man apologizes to me sincerely and I smile at his manner.

“Oh I doubt your vision is worse than mine. I’m going to outstretch my hand and you guide me. How’s this?” I tested him further, I want a little bit of tomfoolery to be honest.

“Slightly to your right, and stop.” The guy guided me patiently and took my hand.

He then gave me my bag and I felt a bit of his skin, most likely the tips of his fingertips. I can feel a high temperature, though he’s wearing a fingerless glove. My instinct tells me he’s a fire bender. And to prefer a fingerless glove, maybe he often works with electricity.

“Are you a firebender?” I asked him softly.

“How do you know?” He raised his voice slightly, as if he’s shocked with a hint of amusement.

“Your hand is very warm.” I told him with a chuckle that escapes my better judgment. “Hm, but I’m sure you have somewhere to go. I shall not mess with your schedule.” I added.

“But I must pay you.” He insists.

“What for? You only bump into me.” I ask.

“I still cause you inconvenience…” He whispered, seemingly lost for words not knowing what to say next.

Maybe he thought of something but only remembered now that I am blind.

“Nevermind my lack of vision, I’m sure you’ll find a way.” I assure him. “Though again, you’re forgiven already. There’s no need for such a hindrance over inconvenience such as this. It would be a different story if one of us hit the other with a moped.”

Grraadakk

Crash!

I heard a commotion somewhere not too far, as the earth beneath my feet was shaken slightly. Oh, it seems like someone is wrecking chaos. Would be good if I at least feel what’s going on.

“I would love to chat with you some more. But it seems like I’ve forgotten to turn off my stove. Bye-bye clumsy stranger!” I took off running towards the chaos direction.

“Uh, wait…” The firebender reacted too slowly as I was already far.

Finding myself into the local chinatown, an area notoriously known as the triple triad region. I felt a satomobile crash into one of the buildings. The source of the chaos was from this young girl who just earthbend the road. The satomobile once more revved up its engine, maybe trying to get away still and hastily tried to move forwards but went in my direction instead so I gave myself a push and hops out of harm's way.

The triple triad’s satomobile must’ve run into another shop as I took a deep breath wondering how such a girl could cause such havoc. She must’ve taken notice of my presence now, as I felt her turn towards me.

“Oh, hey, are you okay?” The girl asks with nothing but worry.

“I’m fine. But pray tell… just what do you think you’re doing?” I felt my expression harden as rage began to seep through my skin.

Merciful spirits, the more I look into the aftermath, the more I felt bad for my caregiver as the chief of the police. This girl ruined three shops like it’s nothing.

“Huh?” The girl was confused as her polar dog I assume sniffed me to get to know me.

But before she could really ask what I mean, the metalbender police announce their arrival with officers making their way quickly with their cables. Dropping my bag, I went into a stance and had my cables ready at both sides of my hips. The girl was at awe when I bent my wires and had both her and her ginormous pet up in the air now struggling.

“WHAT?! HEY!” She resisted my holds, but I made sure she had no limbs free and at a safe distance from me.

“Whatever it was you’re trying to do, you had caused damages to at least three livinghood. For this, you must be questioned for your lack of awareness.” I said simply as the floating ships of the forces grew closer.

“I WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP!” The girl shouted but my hold remained the same as I took her with me to custody.

“Well, me too.” I paid no mind to her further protest as we made our way towards the headquarters.

“Well, if you just open your eyes and see, maybe you would understand what I’m trying to do!” The girl then shouted, making every police stare at her with round eyes and their mouths wide open.

“De - detective!” An officer stood in between me and my victim.

“Be at ease, it’s quite alright now.” I pushed their worries aside as the girl still had her gaze on me, I think. I can feel her glares.

“I don’t need to see; I don’t know who you are or who you think you are. But you’ve done enough. Keep your energy to rant to someone else, I’ll listen to you no longer.” I strapped metal strips over her mouth, rendering this girls’ mouth capability to speak useless.

“She’s the avatar?!” I asked my guardian in disbelief as I helped her tend to the damages the avatar had apparently caused. “As in the reincarnation of Avatar Aang?”

“Yeah, well apparently, she’s no Aang is she?” Lin spatted, pouting as she glared at the new addition piles of her tasks.

“Do me a favor and keep an eye on that troublemaker. Knowing Tenzin, he’ll bend the moment that girl mentioned his father. Do report to me if she’s up to no good.” Lin gave me a new purpose and I was almost too quick to take it. Almost too happy to do something.

“On it!”

“Um, Hello? I’m Korra.” Korra stood on top of a podium, about to announce herself as the current avatar.

Using discreet clothes and sunglasses, I watch from afar as she continues.

“Your new avatar.” Korra declared and was soon bombarded with questions from journalists left and right.

“Uh yes, I’m definitely here to stay but honestly, I… I don't exactly have a plan yet… see I’m still in training but look, all I know is that avatar Aang meant for this city to be the center of peace and balance of the world… and I believe we can make his dream a reality.”

“I look forward to serving you.”

The crowds clap as you remain still. I have a mixed feeling towards this avatar.

“She’s so naive and sheltered. Can she really?” I question no one in particular.

But I have to admit, I wish to see how further her journey will be paved. I wish to see how she will endure her tasks and responsibilities.

“With great power comes great responsibility after all.”
