Chapter Text
Shidou sighed deeply as he took in the sight of his target wordlessly tucking her shoes into a locker. As much as his every instinct was telling him to go against his intentions, he was unable to fully be convinced by them.
Come on Shidou… you can do this.
Curbing his hesitation, Shidou approached Kurumi while putting on his best smile.
“Hey, Kurumi!” Shidou called out. “Are you free tomorrow?”
“Hmm?” Kurumi looked confused at the sudden call out, her confusion vanishing as soon as she'd noticed it was Shidou who'd spoken to her. “Tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” Shidou said in a friendly tone. “I thought I'd show you around the city, get the lay of the land if you catch my drift.”
“Ah,” an understanding dawned on Kurumi's face, her expression knowing. “So are you… asking me out on a date?”
Better to not be too overly forward with this one. She's not actually in love with me, so there's no guarantee she wouldn't kill me the second we're alone. That is, if my assumption of us having an assassin to lovers relationship is even true. She might very well turn out to be a psycho, but so far this anime seems to be pretty grounded. Plus, truly far gone yanderes rarely ever actually show up in harem anime. They're mostly relegated to joke roles or what the anime itself revolves around. If one girl was actively trying to kill the others, the show would have to actively focus on her as the antagonist. And for a show that's centered around sealing Spirit chicks, my best guess is this is the introduction to the active stakes in a show. That being, each girl getting progressively harder and harder for the protagonist to swoon. Unfortunately for the plot, It didn't account for someone being able to dissect it.
“I guess you could call it a date. I'm certainly not against the idea.” Shidou lightly chucked. “I'd have to be an idiot to reject an opportunity like that. Though I guess it does all depend on you whether or not I go home with a broken heart.”
“Oh, no.” Kurumi playfully feigned shock, covering her open mouth with her palm. “I couldn't possibly be so cruel as to reject your heartfelt offer after you worked up all this courage. Of course I'd love to go on a date with you, Shidou.”
This is kinda fun, especially because we're both playing a part.
“Really?!” Shidou's face lit up in faux excitement.
“Fufu~, eager aren't we?” Kurumi giggled. “Don't worry, your ears haven't deceived you.”
“It's a date then!” Shidou exclaimed excitedly. “Let's meet in front of Tengu Station's ticket office at say… 10:30?”
“Certainly!” Kurumi shared Shidou's excitement, bowing in gratitude. “I'll be looking forward to it!”
Concluding her bow, Kurumi quickly turned and ran out of the school with a pep in her step.
Damn she's quick.
Though the talk had gone smoothly, Shidou couldn't help but get an uneasy feeling at what tomorrow awaited.
I hope what we discussed earlier really was the best decision…

“Mana Takamiya killed Tokisaki Kurumi yesterday, yet we don't understand why she's alive.” Reine said, monotonously. “Nevertheless, as long as she is, it's our duty to move forward with the plan.”
The screen changed, showing a feed of Kurumi walking down the street.
“You've got tomorrow off since it's the school's anniversary.” Kotori spoke up, swiveling around on the office chair she sat on.
Kotori turned her gaze away from the screen to gaze at Shidou.
“Go ask Kurumi out on a date!” She demanded.
…Seriously?
Shidou showed great reluctance at Kotori’s words.
“Are you sure about this?” Shidou asked. “I already mentioned why I think she's dangerous. What if she tries attacking me?”
“It’s because we know what's happened.” Kotori said. “There's no guarantee she'll come back to life if she's killed again.”
“That's not what I'm referring to.” Shidou corrected her. “That blood in the alley definitely didn't come from her or my sister. She's not innocent herself either.”
“That's not up to us.” Kotori argued, her tone serious. “It's what you signed up for. We don't decide who to save or not, none of this pick-or-choose business. Pull yourself together Onii-chan!”
“Tobiichi Origami should have already informed the AST of Tokisaki Kurumi’s revival.” Reine added her two cents. “Naturally, that includes Mana Takamiya.”
“Which means it won't be long until they make another attempt on her…” Shidou said.
Kotori nodded in agreement.
“Precisely,” She said sharply, pointing at Shidou. “We're on a time limit here, so we have to act now!”
“Okay… got it.” Shidou said resolutely, hesitantly preparing for his next sentence. “I'll.. I'll…”

“...I'll make her fall for me.” Shidou muttered to himself.
“...What did you say?”
Eek! Molester!
Shidou turned around, startled, and was met with the sight of Origami staring at him with an indescribable expression.
Oh, it's just her…
Shidou's relief was soon turned to confusion as Origami stepped closer, causing him to gradually step back towards the lockers.
Whoa getting a little aggressive there…
“I'll ask you again.” Origami said in an aggressive tone, pinning him against the lockers. “What were you discussing with Tokisaki Kurumi?”
What? Oh, she would probably know more about her given she's part of the AST. I guess it's natural she'd be a little concerned, but I thought we'd come to an agreement, right?
“Oh y'know,” Shidou said, smiling wryly. “We were just talking about FNAF lore. Matpat style discussion, the likes, I'm sure you're familiar with it.”
“Answer me.” Origami demanded, face serious. “This is extremely crucial.”
Shidou studied Origami's expression, noting that her stern gaze seemed to possess a twinge of concern. She was concerned, deeply in fact, but the reason why was lost on Shidou.
She didn't make this face back in her apartment, back then it was mostly worry and a twinge of sadness. Here it looks like… she's panicking? What the hell happened?
“...” Shidou suddenly found himself unable to continue joking like he usually does.
Origami bit down on her bottom lip, hard. As the seconds of silence between them stretched to minutes Shidou could see red begin to stain her teeth.

“Origami-san, I'd love to have you too.” It smiled widely at her, the act bringing chills down Origami's spine.
It licked its hand sensually before bringing it down to gently caress Origami's thigh.
…Disgusting, ugh!
Origami’s body stiffened at the contact, her face expressing disgust at its caresses.
“You look scrumptious!” It exclaimed sensually, gradually moving her hand up Origami's thigh.
NO! STOP!
Origami closed her legs, preventing it from reaching up her skirt. She glared down at it as it expressed disappointment in having its path blocked.
“Aw, you're not fun…” It pouted playfully. “Oh well, we'll have our fun later.”
I WON'T LET YOU!
It continued rubbing her thigh sensually for a few moments before seemingly growing bored. Origami felt the pressure on her limbs disappear as it separated itself from her, releasing the hands keeping her restrained. Origami fell to the ground roughly, letting out violent coughs as she clutched her throat.
Bastard…
“I'll take you after I've had Shidou-san.”
NO!
Origami’s eyes widened in panic at its words, her gaze shooting up only to find herself sitting alone. She didn't waste any time, groggily picking herself up and running down the stairs in panic, nearly tripping against her own feet.
Shidou! Shidou's in danger! SHIDOU! SHIDOU!

Origami involuntarily brought a hand up to her neck as she recalled the earlier event, double checking that there wasn't a hand around her throat. She looked up towards his face, noting the mild concern it seemed to show at her actions.
“Are you okay?” He asked, worried.
I… I…
“No…” Origami breathed out, tears forming at the corners of her eyes.
I'm so scared… scared of losing you…
Origami felt a pair of arms wrap around her body, a sudden warmth surrounding her.
“Hey, it's okay.” Shidou said, his voice soothing. “I’m here, you're okay.”
Origami buried her face in her chest, staining his uniform with freshly shed tears.
It's not me I'm worried about, it's you…
Any argument Origami could have made died in her throat as she felt Shidou place his hand on her head, gently stroking her hair. Origami could do nothing but bask in the warmth of Shidou's embrace, her fears dissipating.
He's here… he's here…
She took in Shidou's scent, confirming his presence once more.
He's here… he's okay…
“Hey, is that what I think I see?” A voice Origami recognized suddenly broke their silence. Ai, a girl from her class, Origami recalled. “Shidou Itsuka is with the super genius?!”
“He was leading poor Tohka-chan on the entire time?!” Another voice exclaimed, Mai if Origami's memory served her right. “We gave her those tickets for nothing…”
“That's so la-”
Mii, if Origami could recall, was cut off by Shidou sending a quiet glare her way. The gesture seemed to convey a message the three gossiping girls immediately understood, now was not the time.
“Two timer.” One muttered under her breath as the girls quickly left, leaving them to their own devices once more.
“What was that about?” Shidou muttered to himself. “I don't remember ever telling anyone I was dating either of you.”
You don't know?
“She told everyone the first week she was here.” Origami's voice came out muffled, her face still buried in Shidou's chest.
How could you not know?
She let out a snort of amusement, marveling at how he'd missed such an obvious detail given his usual perceptiveness.
“Well forgive me, princess…” Shidou said wryly, his voice trailing off as he glanced over at something. “Speak of the devil…”
Devil…!?
“Shidou!” Origami could recognize Princess’ earlier grating voice from a mile away. “Where were you during lunch?! I was- You!”
Princess stopped upon noticing the intimate position Shidou and Origami were in, her face growing red with indignation.
Ah… it's you.
“What are you doing, Tobiichi?! Trying to steal Shidou away from me again?!” She shouted in outrage, flailing her arms up and down. “Fuuh! I won't let you! Get away from him ri-”
“Tohka,” Shidou's gentle but stern voice cut her off. “I'm sure that's not what her intention was, please calm down.”
He's… siding with me…?
Origami withdrew her face from Shidou's chest, allowing Tohka to view her eyes, red and puffy from crying.
“Ah…” Tohka's indignation was quickly replaced with concern, her voice unusually kind as she approached the white haired beauty. “Tobiichi, what's wrong…?!”
You're concerned? For me…?
“Tohka,” Shidou spoke softly, grabbing the Spirit's attention. “Let's give her some time. She'll tell us when she's ready.”
“Ah, okay Shidou...” Tohka looked uncomfortable with Origami's proximity, but put up with it for the moment, swallowing her jealousy.
Origami tightened her hold around Shidou.
“Muh…” Tohka bit her lip.
Hahaha… I won against one…

This is so awkward…
Shidou and Tohka idly walked the path towards their home in complete silence, neither able to find the words to say given their situation. Origami had ended up falling asleep in Shidou's embrace, leading to him having to carry her on his back.
Whatever the hell happened to her must've shaken her up pretty badly. She's kinda heavy, but given how she looked earlier, she probably really needs this…
“Muh…” Tohka pouted, breaking the silence. “I still don't like this Shidou…”
Well that's a given considering what Origami did to even join the harem, still…
“And I don't expect you to.” Shidou replied, attempting to be reassuring. “I know you two have never gotten along, but something major clearly happened to make her like this. I just need you to put up with it, at least until we get home so she can explain what happened. Oh, and for the record, I'd do the same for you.”
“O-Okay…” Tohka replied, a twinge of pink staining her cheeks at Shidou's last comment. “But the moment we're home you're putting her down so… so she can rest! Y-Yes, that's it! So she can rest!”
Well, at least she's trying... Goes to show how much of a cinnamon roll she is.
“You're so thoughtful Tohka,” Shidou smiled gently, a hint of amusement in his tone. “Thank you.”
“Uh… Ah….” Tohka nervously murmured at Shidou's gratitude before looking up at him with a smile. Y-You're welcome, Shidou.”
You're too good for a guy like me, both of you… but it doesn't mean I can't try to live up to your expectations.
“Hey Tohka,” Shidou started, making the girl look up at him curiously. “Can you take my phone out of my pocket? I need to make a couple calls.”
If something could cause the normally stoic Origami could be reduced to this… I'm gonna need all the help I can get.

“Your actions today were quite foolish. Though, I suppose it shouldn't be too surprising, you were always prone to acting without much thought.”
She saw Herald's shadow before she saw Herald itself, hovering a few feet atop the secluded rooftop.
Ugh… you again….
Kurumi internally groaned, her expression reflecting her displeasure at Herald's presence. She looked up, glaring at Herald with thinly veiled irritation.
One day! ONE DAY! Was it too much to ask for one day without you hovering around?!
“Why are you here?” Kurumi asked, irritation evident in her tone.
“You should have exercised more restraint.” Herald replied, their voice stoic but commanding. “The Wizard has already informed your target of your actions, the Wizard that's been hunting you has also been informed. They, alongside the three Spirits your target sealed, currently view you as a threat.”
What…?!
Kurumi's irritation was soon replaced with shock at Herald's words, her one visible eye widening in shock.
I figured Shidou and Tobiichi-san be familiar with each other… but that blue haired annoyance too? He had AST connections this whole time and you didn't think to mention that when you sent me his way? I can run circles around the AST, but adding the two Spirits he's already seduced…
“Shit…” Kurumi bit her thumb in irritation, the force of the act eventually drawing fresh blood. “Damnit…”
“Ironic, isn't it?” Herald asked rhetorically, her voice was monotone yet Kurumi could still sense the ridicule behind it. “Three Spirits working alongside two Wizards, all to combat you. Never thought I'd ever see it. And you only have yourself to blame.”
Kurumi's anger flared up at Herald's words.
“Shut up!” Kurumi shouted in anger. “I'm trying to think!”
She bit down harder on her thumb, drawing more blood.
Damnit… Damnit! Damnit! She's right, I can't do anything…! I could always bear the animosity of the others, it didn't matter, only as long as Shidou still trusted me, but if he's wary of me as well then… I can't do anything! He'd be guarded by too many people for me to eat him! Damnit!
Kurumi gritted her teeth in anger.
“He never trusted you to begin with,” Herald said, seemingly reading her thoughts. “He was always wary of you, your actions today merely proved his suspicions had merit.”
“What…?” Kurumi looked up in shock. “...He knew I was trying to eat him from the beginning? But he didn't…”
“He's a very good actor.” Herald replied. “It’d stand to reason he'd be able to hide his wariness from you.”
Ah…
“Perhaps Shidou aren't too different. Perhaps…” Kurumi dryly laughed to herself, finding a bit of humor from Herald's revelation. “...He's just as two-faced as me.”
Herald didn't reply, remaining as impassive as it'd been since arriving.
“Well… it was fun while it lasted.” Kurumi said absentmindedly, coming to terms with the loss of such a promising meal. “As irritating as your advice was, I'll keep it in mind with the next town I visit.”
Kurumi readied herself to jump off the roof, to cut her losses and vanish into the night, only to resurface in a town that wasn't as hostile as Tengu City.
“He'll still be appearing at your agreed spot.” Herald spoke monotonously.
Huh?
Kurumi stilled, caught by surprise. She turned her head slowly, glancing back at Herald in confusion.
“What…?”
He's still showing up?
“Naturally his companions protested his decision,” Herald said impassively. “However, despite everything he remained adamant that he could still save you.”
Kurumi's eyes widened in shock with a twinge of hopefulness, but those emotions were quickly discarded.
“Hah!” Kurumi laughed, displaying genuine amusement. “Him? Save me? How arrogant!”
What an idiot… though his idealism is adorable.
“Wait,” Kurumi paused, seemingly coming to a realization. “How will I know it isn't a trap?”
“You'll be monitored throughout the entirety of your time together,” Herald informed. “But, I can grant you a brief moment alone with your target. Take advantage of it.”
In other words, I'll need your help. Great…
Kurumi grumbled in irritation, throwing a scowl Herald's way. Though she couldn't see it's face, Kurumi was sure she was smirking.
Bitch… I hate this, but Shidou is too valuable of a meal to pass up…
“Well then,” Kurumi said, her fists clenching in irritation. “I suppose I should get ready for my date tomorrow, no? I wouldn't want to leave a bad impression on Shidou.”
“Don't act impulsively.” Herald cautioned once more.
“Yeah yeah, I got it!” Kurumi replied, exasperated.
“Excellent,” Herald said before dropping into a lower tone. “Then perhaps this operation will be a success after all.”
Operation?
As Herald turned and left, Kurumi couldn't help but wonder what Herald was referring to.
Using me to further your own goals huh? …Disgusting.
She spat on the floor in revulsion.
Screw that bitch… enough about them. I should focus on the positive, I got a second chance.
“Save me, huh?” Kurumi chuckled to herself. “What an idiot… well meaning, but an idiot nonetheless.”
I wonder... Shidou-san. Will you still continue spouting that nonsense as I devour you?
....
...
..
.
.
.
.
.
“So…” Shidou started, his tone unsteady. “Then she said she'd eat you?”
Origami nodded numbly from her spot on the couch, her eyes red and irritated from shed tears.
That's pretty fucked up…
“That's awful!” Tohka exclaimed in indignation. “Tokisaki-san…”
Yeah, it's even worse than I originally thought… an honest to God psycho bitch. An Amber Heard even.
Tohka gritted her teeth, making no effort to hide her agitation.
“I won't let her anywhere near Shidou!” She shouted, moving her body closer to the person in question. “Shidou's not food, I won't allow him to get eaten!!”
“I'd like to have a private chat with this Tokisaki girl.” Yoshinon said from his spot on Yoshino's hand, their tone unnervingly neutral. “They seem like a very interesting character.”
“Mhmm.” Yoshino nodded her head in agreement, her expression unseen as she stared down at the floor.
You doing okay, Yoshino? You look like you're about to tell me not to come to school tomorrow.
“This news is… certainly enlightening.” Kotori muttered, shocked by the new revelation. “But I also have to ask…”
She held up her hand, pointing at a girl in the room who bore a striking resemblance to her brother.
“What is she doing here?!” Kotori hissed, looking between Shidou and his long lost relative.
“Me?” Mana pointed at herself in confusion. “Nii-sama called me.”
“I thought she might know something…” Shidou said sheepishly.
Wasn't expecting Origami to immediately dump everything out as soon as she woke up though… Now Mana knows that we all know about the AST and Spirits, fuck.
“More importantly,” Mana said, turning a stern gaze towards Origami. “Tobiichi-san, regulations state we're not to tell a single civilian about what we do, let alone this many!”
She gestured towards everyone present.
“Sorry…” Origami apologized numbly. “Though I didn't tell him...”
“Yeah, she's right.” Shidou went to her defense. “I found out on my own. I Kinda… went out during a spacequake and saw her in action.”
“...”
Sorry?
“YOU DID WHAT?!” Mana shouted so hard everyone present flinched.
Ow…
“Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?!” Mana grabbed Shidou by the shoulders and shook him roughly. “You could've died!”
“You tell him.” Kotori commented from the sidelines.
Don't turn on me! You're no longer the favorite sister!
“Wait,” Mana stopped, suddenly coming to a realization. “That still doesn't excuse all the others knowing.”
Ah, do we tell her?
Shidou locked eyes with Kotori, silently seeking permission to tell Mana everything.
‘No.’ Kotori mouthed.
Shidou hesitated.
Is that really the best decision? She was able to easily kill Kurumi. Whether or not Kurumi was a weak Spirit or not, Mana still killed a Spirit. That's something both incredibly valuable and dangerous. Lying or deceiving her would probably alienate an important character, and can we really afford to do that? Hell it might even end up turning her against us. I can't risk her harming Tohka or Yoshino, at least if I tell her here we can get the jump on her should she prove hostile. But still, is this really the best choice?
Shidou glanced at Mana, who was patiently waiting for an explanation, before glancing back towards Kotori.
I'm sorry Kotori…
Shidou looked away guiltily, making his intentions clear.
“No!”
....

Why can't you just listen to me?!
Kotori, once again, felt something off.
Argh! Onii-chan!

“So like, don't freak out or anything.” Shidou cautioned. “But we're sorta part of an organization that's dedicated to saving and rehabilitating Spirits, and two of the people here just so happen to be an example of our work.”
““Shidou!”” Everyone, sans Origami, exclaimed in shock.
“What? Do you want me to say that we all just so happened to walk out during a spacequake?!” Shidou said defensively. “She might suck at her job, but I don't want Origami to get fired!”
Origami idly blinked at Shidou's unintended jab.
I can't explain my full reasoning here…
“What?” Mana asked, confusion written all over her face. “Wait…”
Mana adopted a defensive stance as she laid eyes on Yoshino, her body tensing in recognition.
“YOU'RE HERMIT!” She exclaimed as streaks of light began to manifest around her.
Oh shit, she's changing into her stripper clothes!
Shidou quickly got between Mana and the target of her hostility, who looked like she was about to cry any minute now.
“Don't be hasty now,” Shidou cautioned, attempting to diffuse the situation. “Just let me explain everything!”
Tohka joined Shidou's side, standing next to him in case things got violent.
“Shidou's sister, Yoshino doesn't want to hurt anyone.” Tohka said, attempting to talk her down. “But if you try to hurt her…”
Her silent threat was heard loud and clear, somehow.
It won't come to that.
“What she said…” Kotori said ominously, her eyes becoming dangerous.
Three against one, four if you include a Yoshino who's willing to fight back. But I think it's the fact that her only family will be against her that'll be the real deal breaker.
“Listen to them…” Origami's monotone voice suddenly grabbed everyone's attention.
They stared at each other, a silent conversation happening between the two Wizards. After a tense moment of silence Mana let out a deep sigh, the streaks of light dissipating as she adopted a non-defensive stance.
“...Fine.” Mana conceded. “I'll hear what you have to say.”
Yoshino let out a sigh of relief at Mana's words, most of the fear leaving her body.
“Woah… that was scary.” Yoshinon spoke, attempting to lighten the room. “I almost thought we'd have to make like a banana and split.”
You're not fun- Ack!
Shidou felt a sharp pain on his foot, looking down he was greeted to the sight of Kotori’s own foot roughly planted down on it.
“Idiot.” She muttered, glaring up at him.
Yeah… I deserve that one.
....
...
..
.
.
.
.
.
“Ah,” A realization seemed to dawn on Mana as her laid back demeanor returned. “You should've just said that from the start.”
She sent an apologetic look towards the Spirits in the room while rubbing the back of her head.
‘Sorry…’ She mouthed out.
“““HUH?!”””
Everyone present, sans Origami, keeled over in unison.
That shit worked? Well erm- of course it worked! It had no reason not to. Hahaha, eat shit Kotori!
“See?” Shidou turned towards Kotori with a smug grin. “Told you everything would work out.”
*Whack*
Shidou's smug expression vanished the moment Kotori's fist met his face.
Alright, I deserve that one so I'll let you have it…
Shidou idly rubbed his face to quell the pain.
“So…” Mana began, grabbing Tohka and Yoshino's attention. “Nii-sama saved you two?”
They both nodded in response. Mana smiled at their reply.
“That's my Onii-chan for you…” She turned to look at Shidou with admiration.
Ah don't look at me like that. There's no pride in this work…
“...Takamiya-san.”
“Hm?” Origami’s sudden vocalization turned Mana's attention to her. “What is it, Tobiichi-san?”
Origami hesitated for a moment, seemingly trying to formulate how to express her next inquiry.
“Why aren't you upset?” She finally asked after her brief silence. “You’ve killed a Spirit before… how could you so easily…”
What the hell?! Do you want her to try to kill them?! Nevermind, scratch that. She wouldn't try to stop her, and probably devote her time to protecting me from stray shots, leaving the only person capable of killing Spirits to take care of things… but then again, she did help diffuse the situation earlier. Maybe she's finally coming around.
Mana looked at Origami with a sense of warmth, seemingly able to see through her fellow wizard’s anxieties.
“Tobiichi-san… I'm only a Wizard because it's the only thing I've known.” Mana replied, a bittersweet edge to her voice. “As far as I can remember, I've always been here… It's not a noble goal like yours, but it's the only thing I have. At least until now…”
She turned towards Shidou and smiled warmly, an action so pure even Kotori couldn't bring herself to bitch about it.
“You can live with us.” Shidou's sudden offer grabbed everyone's attention.
Ack-
Shidou winced as Kotori stomped on his foot.
“Stop… doing that.” Shidou grunted.
“What are you thinking!” She whispered back.
“If you have nowhere else to go besides the AST, why not live here.” Shidou resumed talking to Mana, ignoring Kotori's whines and the pain in his foot. “This house was remodeled after it was decided Yoshino would live here, it can fit around 20 people.”
“Impressive…” Mana commented. “I did notice it was bigger than all the other ones in the neighborhood, but I figured you were simply well off.”
It's even more impressive how they were able to get it done during an entire school day. Reine said something about realizers, but it all just went over my head. I'll just chalk it up to magic, they used magic.
Shidou glanced towards Origami.
I should also invite her too…
“So, what do you say?” Shidou asked.
“I'll have to think about it…” Mana replied solemnly. “This isn't something I can decide on a whim, nii-sama…”
“I understand.” Shidou replied. “Take as long as you need.”
Kotori silently glared at him from the side.
Quiet you, she's family.
“Takamiya-san…” Origami suddenly spoke, reminding everyone of where the conversation began.
“Ah right. Where was I? The reason I believe there could be good Spirits..." Mana continued, turning back to gaze at Origami with a serious expression. “...is because I don't believe there could be a Spirit worse than Nightmare.”
A long silence followed Mana's finishing statement, allowing everyone to properly digest it.
“Ah, she's that bad huh?” Shidou asked.
“Yes.” Mana stated, expression stern. “Which is why it concerns me that nii-sama is being targeted by them.”
She stepped closer to him, grasping Shidou's hand in hers.
“Please, nii-sama.” She pleaded. “Please tell me you haven't tried to save Nightmare...”
Ah shit.
“...”
Shidou stood silent.
“Nii-sama?” Mana found Shidou's silence concerning.
“Um…”
“Nii-sama!”
“Okay, okay! I've already set up a date with her!”
“You did WHAT?!” Mana's shout almost knocked Shidou over with its intensity.
She looked into his eyes pleadingly, as if she was begging him to say it wasn't true, wishing he'd tell her she misheard. But Shidou's rebuttal never came.
“Don't go.” Mana ordered, squeezing Shidou's hand hard enough to bruise. “You can't go.”
Shidou looked back at her with an indiscernible expression.
I'm with her honestly. If I wasn't sure before, Origami's testimony basically spelled out Kurumi's intentions with me. I shouldn't go, I don't think it's a good idea either. But I feel like going through this date is something that's supposed to happen. The original probably wouldn't have had a good relationship given her forwardness and a harem protagonist's fear of intimacy not mixing, so… he likely didn't ever get her warning. He also wouldn't have questioned the video- oh who am I fucking kidding. He's a harem protagonist, he's going to be stupid. And the stupidest thing to do would be to go on that date. Kurumi is attractive, attractive girls enter harems. She's a future harem member, I know she is. And I'm worried skimping out on this date could jeopardize that plotline. Is going on the date the intended route?
Shidou knew his mental gymnastics had to go into overdrive for this one.

“I mean…”
Shidou was muttering to himself.
“Psychotic pussy is tremendous…”
In a room filled with uneven tension, with his long lost sister looking at him with worry…
“That shits what made Johnny Depp stay.”
He was muttering to himself.
“But what if she isn't Amber Heard crazy…?”
She slapped her forehead in frustration.
My work is cut out for me…

Okay okay okay. Hypothesis, hypothesis time… I'm in a harem anime, one that seems to be more grounded than its contemporaries but still full of anime bullshit. It's taking the savior complex thing to the logical extreme by having me need to save each harem member from a problem imposed on them by the world. So far the established trend with the girls is that they're all suffering from something. Tohka with loneliness, Origami with grief, and Yoshino from self esteem. They all seem to be victims of their own circumstances… could the same ring true for Kurumi? Why did she threaten Origami? Because she's AST? Hell why is she going after me in the first place? My power? But what would she need it for? More importantly, is she even truly evil? Following standard anime conventions, they're probably going to give some bullshit reason to redeem her or justify her actions. It doesn't matter either way, it'd be more logical to get her to actually fall for me instead of potentially making her a permanent enemy now.
“Nii-sama!”
…!
Shidou was snapped out of his thoughts by Mana's sudden shout. Breaking free of his thoughts Shidou turned to look up at her, seeing the concern and fear etched across her face.
“Nii-sama… what are you talking about?” She asked, her face a mixture of worry and confusion.
“I’ll tell you after I finish talking with this cutie.” Shidou said before grabbing Kotori by the shoulder and ushering her away.
“Ah hey! Who are you calling a cutie?! Wha- hey!” Kotori complained as Shidou dragged her over to a corner in the kitchen.
“Nii-sama…” Mana never took her eyes off the pair as they began to quietly converse, watching both like a hawk.
The others also eyed the pair like hawks too, but not to the same degree.
“Okay.” Shidou started, patting both of Kotori's shoulders. “What do you think?”
“Hah?” Kotori looked up at him, confused.
“Did that stick up your ass pierce your brain?” Shidou asked incredulously. “I'm asking if I should go through with Kurumi's date tomorrow.”
A vein popped in Kotori's forehead. She attempted to angrily stomp his foot once more, but Shidou expected it and easily sidestepped the attack.
“Don’t talk to me like that!” Kotori angrily huffed, crossing her arms and turning her head away from Shidou. “Shouldn't the answer be obvious? Of course we're going through with the date, we don't get to pick and choose who gets saved.”
She took Shidou's silence as an opportunity to jump up and begin tugging on his ear as revenge for earlier.
“Ow ow ow ow!”
“And if she's dangerous...”
She tugged harder.
“That's all the more reason to seal her power!” She huffed, releasing her grip on his ear. “We can't just let her run around unchecked.”
“Ow…” Shidou rubbed his bruised ear. “But then what are we gonna do about…”
Shidou's eyes subtly gestured towards Mana and Origami, who both looked at the siblings with tense anticipation.
“I don't think we'll ever be able to convince them, unless you happen to be very persuasive?” Shidou asked.
“Onii-chan…” Kotori let out a deep sigh in response. “You're always causing problems. Ugh, looks like I'm gonna have to clean up your mess, you'll have to repay me for this headache.”
“Alright.” Shidou instantly agreed. “I'll go on a date with you too after this is all over how about that?”
“I-Idiot…” Kotori's face grew beet red at Shidou's offer, her demeanor becoming bashful. “S-Stop saying stupid things! You're not making any sense!”
“Whatever you say, King Bach.” Shidou Shidou said dismissively, grabbing Kotori by the shoulders and spinning her around before giving her a gentle nudge in Mana's direction. “Fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it.”
Everything will work out, Kotori will fix it.
“Ugh…” Kotori grumbled as she stepped forward, placing a hand on her hip and pointing at Mana.
Everything will work out, Kotori's in charge of fixing it.
Shidou's face paled at the realization.
Oh fuck, Kotori's in charge of fixing it!
“Alright, listen up!” Kotori barked, producing a lollipop from her skirt pocket and popping it in her mouth. “Ratatoskr’s number one mission is ensuring that every Spirit, no matter how unpleasant they may be, is safe and sealed.”
Mana's eyes narrowed, her face distorting as gained an indignation fueled glare.
“Nii-sama can't. Nightmare will kill him…” She stated. “...you'll kill him.”
Kotori's arrogant bravado faltered, the lollipop in her mouth breaking from her gritted teeth.
“Ratatoskr exists purely to assist Shidou in attaining that goal. The responsibility of sealing them falls onto him but… but he has us and our resources backing him up!” She recovered quickly before gesturing to the two Spirits present. “We have them as well. If one lone Wizard was able to neutralize Tokisaki-san, we'd seldom have an issue against her with two Spirits on standby.”
Yoshino and Tohka nervously nodded in agreement with Kotori.
“I… I don't care.” Mana glared at Kotori with barely contained rage. “Nii-sama shouldn't have to need protection, nii-sama shouldn't be in danger! Why are you so dismissive about this!? Do you not care if nii-sama gets hurt!?”
…Things are getting too real for my liking.
“Yes I do!” Kotori barked back, spitting the useless stick in mouth into the ground before crushing it. “I simply have faith in Shidou's ability to succeed, something you clearly lack. Hah, maybe if you were actually in his life instead of prancing around being useless you'd actually understand. But no, you were too busy fruitlessly trying to solve an issue Shidou could in a heartbeat!”
Kotori… why?!
“Argh that's it!” Mana had enough, quickly storming past Kotori and firmly grasping his wrist as she was afraid if he would fly away any minute. “Let's go nii-sama.”
“Mana?!” Shidou exclaimed in shock. “What are you-”
“I'm sorry nii-sama, but I can't let you anywhere near nightmare.” Mana replied solemnly. “They’ll kill you.”
“Yeah I get that but I got protection and stuff, more than any normal guy can ask for.” Shidou resisted, stopping Mana's advance. “Where are you even gonna take me anyway?”
“I wouldn't care if you had the heavens themselves defending you, you shouldn't even be in a situation where you'd need protection. The fact that you are means your current family has failed you.” Mana pulled harder, dragging an unwilling Shidou with her as he fought to break free. “I won't. We're leaving now. Far away, where Nightmare will never find you. We- We'll be safe, you'll be safe. So please…”
She turned around, the whites of her eyes stained an irritated red as tears fell down her face.
Mana…
“Go with her.” A monotone voice broke through the tense silence, grabbing everyone's attention.
“Origami…?” Shidou breathed out.
I shouldn't be surprised…
“Please go with her Shidou…” Origami looked at him pleadingly. “I don't want to lose you.”
“Origami…” Shidou trailed off, unsure how to respond. “I…”
Is it really okay…? Is it fine to just abandon everything? Everyone? I wouldn't have to deal with any of this anymore…
“No!”
…!
Tohka, who had so far been silent, suddenly sprang up and blocked the house's exit.
“I… I won't let you take Shidou away.” She said amid barely hidden indignation. “I don't… I don't understand everything, but you're worried about Shidou right? Well y-you don't have to worry. Shidou will be safe, he has me. S-So there's nothing to worry about Shidou's sister. Shidou saved me so… if he's in danger I'll save him.”
The resolve to run vanished from Shidou within an instant. With a sudden burst of strength, Shidou yanked his arm free from Mana's grip, gently massaging it with his other to ease the soreness.
“Ugh… as much as I think Nightmare is fucking terrifying, even she deserves a chance.” Shidou said wistfully. “Besides, I can't abandon Tohka. I made a promise to her.”
“Shidou…” Tohka smiled warmly as the two made eye contact.
“Um… I agree with Shidou.”
The sound of the last occupant in the room standing up drew everyone's attention to the back of the room.
Hah… You too huh? Glad to see you having courage when it counts.
“Mhmm.” Yoshinon nodded from their position on Yoshino's hand. “Listen up missy! Shidou's a big boy, so he can make his own decisions. And if he says he ain't going anywhere, he ain't going!”
“Th-that's right.” Yoshino squeaked in agreement.
Tohka took a step forward, Yoshino following her example soon after. Mana and Origami took a step back in response, inching their way closer towards Shidou.
“I…” Mana started, looking conflicted for only a moment before her expression hardened. “I don't have time for this.”
“Wait, hold on a moment!” Shidou hastily exclaimed, seeing where the situation was heading.
I just had to call Mana here.
“You’ve left me with no choice…” Mana sighed in resignation. “If Nii-sama won't leave willingly I'll-”
*Bang*
Mana's sentence was cut short by the sound of a frying pan colliding with the back of her head. Her expression one of shock as she fell to the ground, catching a glimpse of the red haired girl who attacked her with a cooking instrument.
“Y-You… bi-” Mana hissed out as she fell unconscious.
“...”
“...”
“...”
The room went silent, everyone present struggling to process the aftermath of Kotori's attempt at making breakfast using Mana's head.
“Kotori… what?” Shidou was the first to break the silence.
“We didn't fail Shidou.” Kotori said plainly. “I didn't fail him.”
Ah… that comment really got to you.
“Well, that just happened.” Shidou stated.
“Lieutenant Takamiya…” Origami murmured to herself, eyes wide in shock.
Oh shit, Origami-
“Tohka, Yoshino!” Kotori called out, pointing towards the white haired super genius. “Get her!”
““What?!”” Her words broke both Spirits out of their stupor.
They blankly stared at the shocked Origami as they considered what to do, giving the girl in question the time to recover.
“What are you two waiting for?!” Kotori barked out. “Ugh! Must I do everything?!”
Origami wasted no time in dashing forward and delivering a punch to Yoshino's face. Knocking the weaker Spirit down, Origami quickly maneuvered to land a powerful kick into Tohka's abdomen. Tohka's eyes widened as she finally registered what was happening, but it was too late.
“Ahhh!” Tohka squealed, closing her eyes in preparation as she braced for impact.
Origami's leg met its target, landing a devastating kick that… had no effect.
“...!” Origami's eyes widened in shock as her attack never so much as pushed the Spirit in front of her. “What?”
“I'm fine?” Tohka asked herself as she slowly opened her eyes. “Did she miss?”
“Haha, excellent!” Kotori exclaimed, laughing triumphantly. “Tohka! Grab her arms!”
“Oh, right!” Tohka quickly hooked her arms under Origami's shoulders, using her superior strength to hold the AST member in place. “Like this?”
“NO! LET ME GO!” Origami struggled violently, clawing, scratching, biting, and screaming fruitlessly as she tried to escape the Spirit’s grasp. “Shidou please! Don't do it! Don't go! She'll kill you! Shid-”
*Bang*
Origami fell silent as the iron pan hit its mark, her body slumping as she joined her colleague in the world of unconsciousness.
“Hah… it's over.” Kotori grinned triumphantly, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead. “I don't think we could have won if they activated their CR-Units…”
“What's a CR-Unit?” Tohka asked, carefully setting the unconscious Origami down before quickly moving to check on Yoshino. “And will… will they be okay? They weren't bad… but, they wanted to take Shidou away.”
“They’re weapons.” Shidou answered for Kotori. “It's that armor they wear when fighting… I think.”
“I see.” Tohka replied in wonder, cradling the awakening Yoshino. “You really know everything Shidou…”
I don't know everything, I just know what I know.
Shidou leaned down to study Mana's unconscious form, taking note of her steady breathing.
Turns out it did, in fact, have to come to this.
“They're just asleep.” Shidou continued, releasing a sigh of relief. “They'll be alright… but was this really necessary Kotori?”
“Hah?” Kotori looked at him like he was an idiot, and in many ways he was. “Of course it was! They were in the way, and they were going to kidnap you! There was no way I was letting that happen! My pride as a little sister depended on it.”
Kotori let out a ‘humph’ as she crossed her arms and turned her back to him.
“Now, make yourself useful and watch the prisoners.” Kotori barked out. “I’ll have to call Fraxinus and figure out how we can restrain these two…”
“So I guess I'm going on that date after all.” Shidou said absentmindedly, laying Mana and Origami on the couch.
“Are you stupid? Of course you are.” Kotori asked incredulously. “Prepare yourself lover boy, after this is all over I'll be cashing in my favor.”
“Ah, so you did want that date after all?” Shidou teased.
“S-Shut up!” Kotori angrily stormed off.
That never gets old.
Shidou glanced towards the small Spirit on the floor.
“You okay Yoshino?” He asked hesitantly. “Yoshinon? Are you good?”
She wasn't being helped out by residual Spirit powers like Tohka, so she must've taken that punch with the resistance of a regular human… that looked like it hurt.
“Mhmm…” Yoshino gave a shaky thumbs up before her arm fell limply onto the floor.
“Just peachy.” Yoshinon groaned.
Good, good…
Shidou turned his attention to the unconscious Origami, her face contorted. He unconsciously reached out to soothingly pat her head.
“I'm sorry things turned out this way…” He said. “But I promise you Origami, I'll be okay.”
I will.
Her expression softened.

“You’re going on a date with a strange girl while your two girlfriends watch on.” Kotori said teasingly. “Truly, your lechery could only be the work of a higher being.”
“My date hasn't even arrived yet and you're already talking shit about me.” Shidou sighed, ruffling his hair as he continued to idly wait for his date to arrive. “That's a new record, if you keep it up you might even make it to the state finals.”
“Your snark is noted.” Kotori replied smugly, Shidou could almost hear the smirk on the other end. “And duly ignored. Look sharp Shidou, here comes the lucky girl.”
Sure enough, Shidou's gaze soon fell upon a familiar figure as they slowly approached. Kurumi wore a black frilly Gothic lolita dress and large boots, her appearance carrying an aura of nobility as she steadfastly approached.
Holy shit, she's so pretty…
“Have I kept you waiting all this time, Shidou?” Kurumi spoke softly as she came to a stop. “I apologize for not coming sooner, I would've appeared sooner had I known...”
“Ah, no it's not a big deal.” Shidou said placatingly, displaying that he wasn't bothered. “I just got here myself, I see you really took the date idea seriously.”
“Of course I would.” Kurumi pouted, holding up a finger and poking Shidou's chest. “I wouldn't be able to face myself if I didn't give it my all. I've been looking forward to this all day after all.”
Her touch sent shivers down Shidou's spine, his lower head didn't get the memo however. Shidou looked Kurumi up and down, his gaze remaining on some parts longer than others.
Jesus this beauty is terrifying…
Kurumi noticed Shidou's blatant ocular harassment, standing still as he drank up her appearance while sensually smiling.
“Do you like my outfit?” She asked, giving Shidou a twirl to fully show it off. “I picked it out just for you~.”
“Yes I do.” Shidou replied immediately. “Though, I would've been just as happy if you chose an outfit for yourself.”
“Fufu~, is that so?” Kurumi smiled. “Then perhaps I'll show you next time, look forward to it.”
“I will.” Shidou replied.
…
Wait what am I doing?! This bitch plans to kill me! Why the fuck am I being so cordial with her?!
“Where would you like to go first?” Kurumi asked innocently, grabbing Shidou's attention.
Ah… right.
“Well…”
Shidou nervously scratched his ear and muttered a single word under his breath.
“Kotori.”
I'd like to not take any chances with her… so I'll just let the plot decide for me. In this case, the plot is whatever Kotori and those love gurus come up with. Whatever, those guys weren't doing anything anyway. They might as well make themselves useful now.
“Heh.” Shidou heard Kotori giggle on the other end. “Shidou, repeat after me…”
“Lingerie shop?” Shidou repeated absentmindedly. “Ah… wait.”
Nevermind I shouldn't have trusted Kotori.
“Uh H-Hey listen.” Shidou stammered. “That was just…”
Kurumi brought a hand up to her chin, cupping it as she pondered Shidou's suggestion.
“If you'll pick something for me,” Kurumi quickly looked away then back towards Shidou as she bashfully replied. “Then I suppose…”
“She actually agreed!” Shidou heard Yoshinon’s exclamation on the other end.
“So bold…” Shidou heard Yoshino mumble.
Glad to see you're enjoying yourself, Yoshino. It's a shame you won't be able to help much out here considering you haven't unlocked your spirit powers, but…
Shidou spared an apologetic glance towards a suspiciously Tohka shaped bush in the distance.
At least I have some protection, so it should be fine… I probably jinxed myself.
“Haha…” Shidou nervously chuckled. “Let's go then.”
“Yes, let's!” Kurumi excitedly replied, gracing Shidou with a hopeful smile. “I hope you choose something cute!”
She wasted no time in wrapping her arms around Shidou's right arm and leaning against him as they walked towards their destination. Shidou couldn't help but don a stupid grin as he
enjoyed the Spirit’s closeness.
Ahahaha… this ain't so bad. Maybe Johnny Depp had the right idea here.
Somewhere in the distance, a Tohka shaped bush silently seethed in envy.

.
Shidou found himself feeling awkwardly looking around like a lost child as he surveyed the interior of the shop, fruitlessly waiting for an adult who would never save him.
So… this is a lingerie shop. Gonna be honest I can't really ever imagine a girl shopping here. I mean, I know they exist back home but I can never imagine a girl actually having the confidence to shop here. Like, what percentage of people have ever gone to a bowling alley, or ice skating? Maybe it's a normie thing, what I consider attractive isn't exactly conventional…
“My, there are so many!” Kurumi exclaimed as she parted from Shidou to examine the lingerie on display.
Hmm, Kurumi would look good in a suit. Tch, I'll save that for a future encounter.
Kurumi grabbed two lingerie sets, one light blue, the other pink with black dots. Turning around, Kurumi held them up side by side for Shidou to scrutinize.
“Which of these looks better to you?” Kurumi asked, her one visible eye glancing between the two.
“Hmmm…” Shidou made noises to indicate he was giving the question serious thought when he really wasn't.
Honestly I don't really like either one…
“The black one.” Kotori supplied.
Black one?
Shidou looked behind Kurumi, where a mannequin wearing a set of black lingerie sat a small distance away.
That'll work. Who would've thought you'd be useful for once?
“Both of those look pretty nice,” Shidou said before raising his arm to point at the mannequin behind her. “But I prefer that one.”
Kurumi glanced at the mannequin, eyes widening in mild surprise as she took in Shidou's choice.
“That's what you want me to wear, Shidou-san?” Kurumi asked inquisitively.
“Well you definitely don't have to if you don't wanna…” Shidou replied sheepishly. “I was just thinking that it'd suit you, it compliments your hair and outfit since they're… y'know, both black.”
“Fufu, you certainly put a lot of thought into it didn't you, Shidou-san?” She said, her tone doing little to conceal her amusement. “You don't have to worry, as it's something you selected…”
Kurumi reached her hand out and grabbed a set of Shidou's chosen lingerie.
“I would love to try it on for you.” Kurumi uttered a final comment before eagerly strolling into a changing booth, closing the curtain behind her.
Shidou let out a huge sigh once Kurumi was out of sight.
Man, I'm really out of my element here… this is the first girl I've dealt with that actively prioritizes my own feelings over her own. I guess it's fine cause she keeps insisting, but I still can't help but feel like an asshole regardless. Uh…
Shidou suddenly felt as if a million eyes were shooting daggers through him. Turning around, Shidou found himself on the receiving end of a very angry group of women, likely due to his shamelessness.
Where the fuck did you all come from?! This store was not that full when I arrived!
Shidou gritted his teeth anxiously as he considered his next move.
Seems like more anime bullshit… The original would probably whimper in fear of this. While it is certainly mortifying, I didn't do anything wrong. And I'm sure as hell not letting them guilt trip me, that's a me thing. I patented it.
“Fuck y’all looking at?” Shidou said confrontationally, drawing shock from the crowd of angry women. “I ain't forcing her to do anything. I just said she'd look good in it. And y'know what? I think it'd look good on all of you too.”
The group's reaction to Shidou's outburst was… mixed to say the least. Some sneered, others looked shocked, and one even blushed. Shidou’s words had their intended effect. One by one, the women dispersed, not before imparting Shidou with choice words.
“Disgusting…”
“Pervert.”
“Freak.”
“Call me…”
Uh huh, whatever you say. Like you were all here for pure reasons. I'm sure.
“Bitches…” Shidou muttered under his breath.
The last of the crowd disappeared, leaving Shidou alone with his thoughts and a very displeased looking Tohka.
Wait, Tohka?!
“Muuh… Shidou...” Tohka grumbled.
“What are you doing here?!” Shidou whispered harshly. “Youre supposed to be watching from a distance…!”
“I couldn't see you from outside, so I got worried…” Tohka said softly. “You're only supposed to focus on her…”
Tohka glared at Shidou, daring him to explain why he was seemingly hitting on an entire crowd of girls.
“You know I just said that to make them go away, right?” Shidou explained. “I'm not capable of making every girl my girlfriend y'know? Those girls would never wanna be my girlfriend.”
“Why not?” Tohka asked, her head tilted to the side. “I like being your girlfriend…”
“There's this thing called preferences.” Shidou replied. “You enjoy being my girlfriend, but can you imagine being say, Tonomachi’s girlfriend?”
Tohka’s face contorted in response.
“Ew…” Tohka blanched. “No way! Stop being gross Shidou…”
“Heh…” Shidou laughed at Tohka's reaction. “Like I said, what you like about me might be something another girl wouldn’t.”
“Muuh… Well they're dummies! All of them!” Tohka exclaimed.
“Maybe so.” Shidou noticed Tohka still seemed upset. “Hey, what's wrong?”
“I’m not your preferences am I, Shidou?” Tohka asked, her tone melancholic.
“That's not-”
“The way you look at Yoshino, Kotori, Tobiichi, and me… You don't give us the same look we give you.” Tohka turned her gaze towards the changing booth. ”But you gave her that look.”
The token airhead having a sudden bout of introspection, another cliche. Wait, this is serious. Why the fuck am I thinking about cliches right now? This really isn't a good time to have a serious conversation… fuck.
“It’s not because I don't love you.” Shidou placed both hands on Tohka’s shoulders reassuringly. “I don't look at you three like that because I believe it's too soon for that. I care too much about you four for that. Kurumi… she's just very good at forcing it out of people.”
I really don't want you to explain that ‘the look’ is desire. Sure as hell isn't love, It's impossible for me to fall in love that quickly. I'm not a native to this world. I can see myself falling for you Tohka... but not as fast as you fell for me.
“You're still upset, aren't you?” Shidou asked, noticing Tohka's expression changed very little. “I'm sorry…”
“Uh uh, that's not it.” Tohka shook her head. “It's… we've been apart more and more lately. The more time passes the further you seem, Shidou.”
“Things are changing too fast for you, aren't they?” Shidou guessed. “You feel like ever since your arc got finished the plot’s been preventing you from getting what you want.”
“Shidou… I don't understand a lot of those words.” Tohka smiled at Shidou sheepishly, her mood uplifted. “But I think you're right. You really know everything…”
“Just what I know.” Shidou replied.
A wistful smile etched itself across Tohka's face.
“I don't like when things change, Shidou.” Tohka said.
Shidou blinked.
Not what I was expecting, but understandable.
“Things used to be one way for as long as I could remember, I would appear in this world then have to defend myself from the mecha-mecha squad… until I met you.” Her voice became low as she spoke nostalgically. “And when I met you, that was a good change. You showed me how amazing this world could be, that I deserved to experience it, and that I wouldn't do it alone.”
A pause.
“But then… things changed.” Tohka clenched her fist. “You told me there were others like me, then suddenly it wasn't just us. I had to share you with them all of a sudden. They became your girlfriends too, you spent time with them too, y-you… kissed them too.”
Another long pause.
“I hate that.” Tohka said simply, her tone reminiscent of Shidou's first encounter with her.
Shidou didn't respond, mostly to help Tohka get it all out of her system. So Tohka kept going.
“Everything is changing, you're meeting new girls like me… and suddenly I don't feel so special anymore, Shidou.” Tohka shifted her weight. “I wanted to go on another date today too, but then you asked her on one before I could ask…”
“Abandoned.” Shidou replied. “You feel abandoned. I'm sorry Tohka…”
“Muuh…” Tohka grumbled, blinking away potential tears. “Don't say sorry Shidou. I can't hate you, even if you do leave me behind…”
Tohka sniffled.
“The world may reject you…” Shidou began, grabbing Tohka's attention. “And circumstances might divide us, but I will never, and mean never, abandon you.”
He brought her into a soothing embrace.
“I know I made a lot of promises that day, and you might not remember them all.” Shidou murmured. “But know that I intend to follow every single one.”
“I never forgot…” Tohka replied, head buried in his chest. “I could never.”
Tohka broke free from Shidou's embrace, turning to look towards the black lingerie he'd picked out for Kurumi.
“D-Do you think it'd look good on me too?” Tohka shyly asked.
“Yeah, I do.” Shidou replied matter of factly. “But I think you should be going… Kurumi could get out any second.”
“Ah, right!” Tohka exclaimed, her face beet red as she hurriedly rushed out of the store. “Thank you!”
…
“...”
And there she goes.
“I'm surprised you didn't stop her.” Shidou said simply.
“We all agreed it was something she needed.” Kotori replied. “Her emotional state happens to be the most volatile. You were doing a decent job of keeping her lid from bursting, but this in particular needed the most attention. If it wasn't addressed now it never would be. I don't want to criticize your work, but you were far too effective at winning her heart. Tone it down a little next time, okay bro?”
Hmmm, well-
Shidou heard the curtain move.
“How do I look, Shidou-san?” Kurumi asked.
“…”
Kurumi, feeling flustered by Shidou's silence, lightly fidgeted in place as she showed off the black lingerie that exposed her pearly white skin.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Shidou's hearing was blocked out by the sound of his rapidly beating heart as the image of Kurumi in black lingerie was burned into his eyes.
“Yoo-hoo? Earth to Shidou-san?” Kurumi's faint voice could be heard through the thumping of his heart.
SHIDOU! CALM YOUR ASS DOWN, SHIDOU! IT'S NOT LOVE IT'S JUST LUST, IT'S NOT LOVE IT'S JUST LUST!
Kurumi was right in front of him now, in front of him while wearing the lingerie…
“Oh my fucking god!” Shidou blurted out.
“Kami- What? Shidou-san?” Kurumi asked. “Is something wrong?”
“Nothing!” Shidou replied, furiously ruffling his own hair. “Please ignore this man's ramblings!”
Why couldn't I have been reborn as that smartphone bastard? This shit would've been so much easier if the harem was like 80% children. Wait no, that sounds bad. Man… fuck these supernatural girls! I should've just run away when I had the chance! I could've made my own harem, with blackjack and hookers. And 90% less incest, not 100 though, just in case I have a hot cousin I don't know about.
Her lips curved, and her eyes glittered with amusement.
“Was I that stunning, Shidou-san?” Kurumi teased, taking a step forward.
Shidou took a step back.
“You look beautiful in that outfit.” Shidou replied, averting his gaze. “This type of beauty should be illegal.”
“Shidou-san, please!” Kurumi playfully slapped his shoulder. “You're going to make me blush…”
Ugh… If I didn't know you were trying to kill me I would have fallen apart by now. She's dangerous for all the right reasons.
“Itsuka-kun, what are you doing here?” A voice called out from behind Shidou.
Oh no…
Shidou found himself staring back at the three girls who'd been psychologically torturing him more effectively than the literal murderer in this world, Ai, Mai, and Mii.
“Why are you with Tokisaki-san?” Ai asked.
“At an underwear shop, no less!” Mai continued.
“That's so lame.” Mii gave her input.
“Ehehe,” Shidou laughed sheepishly. “I can assure you there's a completely normal explanation for this that doesn't include any infidelity.”
Shidou reached into his pocket and handed the shocked Kurumi a wad of cash before leaning in to whisper in her ear.
“Meet me at the park after you're done changing back. You look cute in that, by the way.”
“Oh my,” Kurumi replied slyly, rubbing her cheek bashfully.
Shidou turned back towards the three gossiping trio.
“I'll tell you after I finish taking a shit!” Shidou exclaimed before quickly pushing past them and rushing outside.
“Hey!” A voice called out.
“Where do you think you're going?!” Another voice continued.
“That's so lame!” A third voice gave her input.
“Screw you guys!” Shidou yelled as he rushed towards the park.
“My how crass.” Kurumi covered her mouth with her free hand as she spoke coyly. “Is that how you talk to every girl you come across?”
Shidou jerked his head around and smirked, having heard her.
“Only the annoying ones!”

Huuurgehh… heh… heh…
Origami coughed violently, the act of breathing becoming more and more painful with each breath she took.
Ack… ack…
She retched, attempting to empty the content of her stomach onto the pavement. It was empty however, her gagging only producing thick balls of spit which she violently spat out.
Mom… Dad…
Tears clouded her vision, the vile inferno surrounding her transforming into a myriad of orange and yellow blotches.
“T… chi…”
She blinked out the carbon stinging her eyes, finally spotting two blurry figures that stood out among the flames. Wiping her face, she finally found who she'd been looking for.
Mom! Dad!
“To… bii…”
She sprang forward with energy she didn't know she still had, quickly rushing to her parents as fast as her little legs could carry her.
They're ok-
A flash.
“Mom…?”
And then they were gone.
“Dad…?”
She called out to them.
“Mom! Dad!”
…
But nobody came.
No… it can't…
Her parents were gone, reduced to nothing.
You…
A myriad of emotions flooded her head, sadness, fear, but most prominently anger. She felt anger towards the figure hovering in the sky a good distance away, it had taken them from her. It will not go unpunished.
I swear… even if it kills me…
A pair of gentle arms wrapped around her.
Huh…?
She turned around, just barely being able to make out the visage of a boy with blue hair before-
“TOBIICHI-SAN!”
Origami shot awake.
A-a… it was a dream? Where am I?
She found herself sitting in a cramped white room, her arms bound, and pressure pushing against her back. Perhaps if she suffered back pain the pressure would be soothing, she wasn't however, so it was just uncomfortable in this instance.
“Takamiya-san?” She asked, monotonously. “What happened?”
“She must've hit you pretty hard, huh?” Takamiya-san let out a dry laugh. “Hits hard for her size too...”
Who?
Pain reverberated through her head as the memories from a few hours ago resurfaced.
Ah… I remember now.
“Sister in law…” Origami whispered.
“Finally come back to you?” Takamiya-san sighed.
“Where are we?” She asked, ignoring Takamiya-san's words and getting straight to the point.
“Bathtub.” Takamiya-san replied.
“What?”
“Look around.” She replied.
Sure enough, upon looking around she found that they were surrounded by porcelain walls, the exit just barely visible over the edge.
How did I miss that? Brain damage?
She attempted to recall what was most important to her, finding nothing wrong there she quickly dismissed the hypothesis.
I have to go.
Origami attempted to stand up, but was unable to due to something at her legs. Looking down, she found a bulky pair of electronic handcuffs binding her feet together.
Ah. Perhaps the brain damage was purely isolated to my situational awareness.
“It's no use.” Takamiya-san bitterly replied. “They handcuffed both of us together so we couldn't get each other out.”
“So I'm stuck with you?”
“That's your main take away from this?”
Origami ignored her, opting to use a tried and true method to get out of the trickiest of situations, thrashing violently.
“Ow! Stop!” Takamiya-san recoiled. “What part of ‘it's useless’ do you not understand? I don't know how they got their hands on them, but these cuffs were made to restrain Wizard's that go AWOL. Hear me? AWOL. We can't even activate our CR-Units with these on.”
Origami merely continued to stare blankly at her.
“We can't escape.” She said with finality.
She turned away, tears stinging her eyes.
“All we can do now is… is hope nii-sama comes back.” Takamiya-san breathed out.
Hope?
The word was foreign to her. Hope belied both logic and reason, it was something used only when one's actions failed them. When one found themselves exhausted of all options and could only rely on the expectation that one's emotions could turn a situation around, that's when hope was utilized. Hope was a tool used by emotional quitters. And far as she was concerned, she lacked either qualities. Origami Tobiichi did not rely on hope.
But it doesn't seem like I have much of a choice…
*Sniff* *Sniff*
Her attention was grabbed by the sound of sniffling behind her.
Are you crying? That won't solve anything you know? Actions are what drive the world forward, if you want something done you have to act on it.
‘You were crying earlier as well.’ A voice in the back of her head interjected.
Was I? That doesn't sound like me. Crying requires emotions, which I've given to Shidou. I have no sadness to give. Crying isn't productive either, I wouldn't waste precious time like that.
‘You were crying earlier, after Nightmare let you go.’ The voice replied.
Ah yes, in Shidou's arms. I'd say crying was productive in that case, he must've temporarily returned that emotion to me. It's to be expected, the amnesia must've prevented him from keeping a firm grip on it.
‘It's not just that.’ The voice continued. ‘You’ve been more emotional ever since you became Shidou's girlfriend. You've let your judgement become clouded.’
I have?
‘If you were thinking logically, siding with Shidou would have been the correct course of action.’
But it would have put Shidou in danger, Takamiya-san was right in being cautious.
‘You forget Shidou's wishes.’ The voice replied. ‘As his girlfriend, you should've listened to his desires as well.’
I did listen, I simply didn't agree with them.
‘Therein lies the problem. You forgot to consider Shidou's stubborness.’ The voice continued. ‘Not to mention the stubbornness of his pets.’
The Spirits?
‘As repugnant as they are, Shidou's gained their full loyalty.’ It paused, letting her digest the revelation before continuing. ‘Logically he would have been the safest in their company, even with his intentions to confront Nightmare in mind. In that regard they're more loyal to him than you.’
Now you're speaking nonsense.
‘No, you're talking idiotically. If you sided with Shidou you would be staring at him right now instead of a bathtub, in the company of more powerful beings he's won the loyalty of.’ The voice scolded. ‘You let your selfishness and emotions get you in this situation. He's relying on them instead of you now.’
No…
Her eyes watered for a moment, before she caught herself and quickly blinked the tears out of existence.
‘We’'ll never hold a candle to them. We're just as useless now as we were then. Just a little girl crying out to parents that'll never come, wallowing in self pity. As if that would bring them back…’
NO!
Origami closed her eyes tight, her breathing coming to a standstill.
I'm not that little girl anymore! She's… not here, Shidou's taking care of her.
‘Are you sure?’ Origami replied, her tone mocking. ‘You're speaking to her right now.’
She took a pained breath, inhaling large wafts of air her body had been deprived of.
Hah, talking to myself… It seems I really did receive brain trauma.
‘I've been back for a while, you could say I never fully left.’ Origami replied. ‘I’m the root cause of your current state, though this is good. Your volatility allows me to finally converse with you.’
So this is your fault? We have nothing to discuss. Go back to Shidou, I haven't asked him to give you back.
‘Angry are we? Ironic. That's why I was even able to come back.’
What do you mean?
‘You gave Shidou everything except your anger, your desire to rip apart the creatures that took everything from us, in the end you were never able to fully part with me. If you want to get rid of me, you know what to do.’
Origami gritted her teeth.
You're asking for the impossible.
‘I’m not asking for anything,’ Origami replied. ‘I wish to see that vision come to fruition as well. That desire originated from me after all. Unfortunately though, it seems we can't be as greedy as we want to.’
Greedy?
‘You remember don't you? How we'd always beg Dad for the newest toy everyone talked about in school, how we'd beg him to buy us ice cream in the summer, and when we couldn't decide on a flavor he'd give in and buy us all of them despite knowing mom would yell at us after. Or how about when Dad bought Mom a box of chocolates on her birthday, and they looked so yummy we begged to try one until she got mad and tossed the whole box at our head.’
I try not to remember.
‘We can't kill every Spirit.’
What?
‘We have to be honest with ourselves. That ship sailed the moment Shidou decided he needed to start bedding them.’
You sound like you're whining.
‘Because it’s not fair!’ Origami whined, her voice shifting to a childlike tone. ‘Why'd he have to be such a horndog huh?! If Dad were here he'd beat Shidou up for not being satisfied with us! Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid Shidou!’
Shidou's worth it. If you're me you should know that. Besides, Dad couldn't touch Shidou, I'd be protecting him.
‘Even if that involves forgiving those hussies he surrounded himself with?!’ Origami shrieked. ‘I thought you were going to kill all the Spirits while I was gone.’
I am.
‘Then why haven't you killed them?!’ Origami asked incredulously. ‘You had so many chances to try!’
Because…
‘Yeah. Because of Shidou.’ Origami interrupted. ‘He wants to save them all! The big idiotic hero he is.’
But I-
‘What will we do if he tries to save the one who took them from us?’ Origami asked, anger coloring her tone. ‘What will we do if he attempts to forgive something he has no right to.’
Shidou wouldn't.
‘What if he does?’
He wouldn't.
‘But what if he did?’
He wouldn't.
‘But if he-’
Wouldn't.
‘Ugh stop interrupting me!’ Origami whined.
You earn uninterruption privileges when you stop saying stupid things.
‘But you have to understand!’
He wouldn't.
‘But-’
Say it with me.
‘Okay fine he wouldn't!’ Origami relented, huffing in irritation.
Good.
‘You suck.’ Origami replied. ‘You can't kill his current hussies, and you can't kill his future ones. We've become his girlfriend but even then we're not his focus.’
I got the farthest.
‘Yeah, and then you made him feel like a dookie on the inside after.’ Origami blanched. ‘You’re so gross, I still can't believe you did that!’
It felt nice. Worth it.
‘You’re gross!’ Origami shrieked. ‘Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross!’
You like Shidou too don't you? You should understand.
‘Lalalalalalalalala I can't hear you!’ Origami replied. ‘Look. We’re going to have to abandon our initial plan if Shidou's going to keep converting Spirits. He seems to think that not all of them are bad. And unfortunately, he hasn't been proven right yet. The only one he'd be willing to let us kill is Efreet… if he knows what's good for him.’
I think he'd understand.
‘He better.’
He will.
‘I hope he's okay…’
I don't need to hope, I need to get out of here and confirm he's okay. Now unless you have something useful to say, be quiet. I need to think.
‘What? Rude. This is why you don't have any friends.’
I don't need friends, they're irrelevant to the goal at hand.
‘What about Shidou?’
That was a necessary friendship.
‘uh huh.’
…
‘You figure something out yet?’
You're still here?
‘I told you, I'm the emotional part of you. I will always be a part of you.’
Go away. I tire of your voice.
‘Is that irritation I sense? You can thank me for that.’
Go back to Shidou. And don't come back.
‘...’
…
‘...Alright, I'll go.’ Origami relented. ‘I'll take that anger with me too.’
No.
‘?’
That stays. I didn't give him permission to take it.
‘You know I'll come back again if you keep it, don't you?’
…Don't come back.
‘I am you, and you are me.’ Origami replied. ‘You can't fully kill a part of yourself if you keep a piece of it y'know?’
Shidou promised to put up with you. You are his burden, this anger is mine.
‘It's more like he's carrying a lot of tiny grocery bags while you carry the milk jugs.’
What is that supposed to mean?
‘It's nice to be carried by someone, but it's embarrassing as well. Having someone help you stand is the best in between those two.’
I don't follow.
‘If you won't let go of the jugs, at least let him help you hold them up.’ Origami replied sagely. ‘Ahhhh that was so embarrassing, I can't be here anymore!’
What?
…
The absence of a response left Origami's head feeling lighter, as if a weight had been lifted off of it.
So they left.
Origami resumed trying to brute force her way out of the handcuffs.
“Ow…” Takamiya-san vocalized between sobs. “...Stop it.”
Tch. Useless.
“So… you really are his sister?” Origami asked, attempting to make small talk.
Takamiya-san turned to give her a tear filled glare.
“Sorry, Ryouko told me small talk helps in stressful situations.” Origami said, monotonously.
It's more for your sake than mine. You cry a lot.
“Hah…” Takamiya-san let out a dry laugh. “You don't look like you've engaged in small talk in your entire life.”
“I never had the need to.” Origami replied succinctly.
“Until now?” Takamiya-san blinked the last of her tears away, baffled. “And seriously, that's the question you think to ask?”
“I was curious.” Origami replied. “You seem too prideful to cry without meaning it.”
I'd know.
“Yes I am.” Takamiya-san answered, her eyes watering once more. “Like I've already said, he's the only family I have so...”
“I understand.” Origami replied. “He's the only one I have left as well.”
“I see.” Takamiya-san said, her tone melancholic.
“...”
“So how did you meet nii-sama?” Takamiya-san asked shakily. “It's fine if you don't want to answer, but it would be nice to hear how nii-sama helped a human instead of a…”
Should I? No, it's between me and him. She has no business knowing.
“My memory is failing me. I couldn't tell you if I wanted to.” Origami lied. “We were childhood friends, but we didn't reunite until recently.”
“So you two got separated when you were kids?” Takamiya-san asked curiously. “Did you move or something?”
Or something.
“I asked my aunt to help me join the AST.” Origami replied. “My obligations prevented me from meeting him again until this year. Though I did research him prior to reuniting.”
“Research?” Takamiya-san inquired.
“I learned of his interests from asking around, his hobbies, what time he leaves for school, where he lives, what he-”
“Uh, that sounds like stalk-”
“It was research.” Origami said blankly.
“I… pfff-” Takamiya-san giggled, her voice seeming to break out of the melancholic haze it was drenched in just moments ago. “Ahaha, you're funny Tobiichi-san. I didn't know you could make jokes.”
What?
“That wasn't a-”
“Thank you for that.” Takamiya-san said, her voice tinged with gratitude. “Keep going please. Tell me more.”
I don't know how to tell jokes.
“About Shidou?” Origami asked, monotonously.
“Yes.” Takamiya-san replied simply. “I didn't get the chance to fully catch up with nii-sama last time. I might never now…”
I doubt he could have told you much given his amnesia. Though, there is one thing…
“He likes to watch anime on his way to school.” Origami informed.
“Anime?” Takamiya-san inquired. “Nii-sama likes anime?”
“Yes.” Origami replied. “Though, lately we haven't watched it together.”
“You watch it together?” Takamiya-san asked, befuddled.
“Of course, it's quite intriguing.” Origami replied.
“Ah this is terrible!” Takamiya-san exclaimed. “Nii-sama might become a smelly otaku!”
What's so bad about that? If he smells I can bathe him myself.
“How interesting. So that's where the crystal went…”
What?
“Did you say something?” Origami asked, confused.
“How can an otaku have a girlfrie- huh?” Takamiya-san looked back at her with equal confusion. “You said something?”
“Did you hear that?” Origami repeated her question.
“Hear what?” Takamiya-san replied.
“Forget it.” Origami dropped the subject, though she could swear she saw something blurry over the edge of the bathtub.
“It's alright Tobiichi-san.” Takamiya-san attempted to comfort her. “It's just nerves, being here really makes you anxious huh-”
Takamiya-san suddenly went quiet as she grabbed the edge of the tub and… stood up?
How-
Origami brought her hands up to her face, realizing they were no longer bound. Quickly turning around, she found the handcuffs laying on the ground.
They're open…
Any further questioning as to how the handcuffs were opened were quickly snuffed out as Takamiya-san helped her to her feet and out of the bathroom.
“They must've used a faulty model… thank goodness.” Takamiya-san said as they stepped out into the empty living room. “My prayers were answered… I'm coming for you nii-sama.”
Origami meanwhile, was baffled by the sudden turn of events.
Hope… actually worked?
She wasn't going to complain though.
How corny…

Kurumi waited outside the lingerie store for Shidou-san to return. She held a bag containing the black lingerie he'd asked her to try on earlier.
I can't believe I actually bought it.
She peeked inside the bag, her pale skin flushing as she quickly closed the bag to hide its contents from God.
I'm so embarrassed…
She hid her blush as she heard a familiar sound of footsteps approaching.
“Hey,” Shidou-san said, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. “Sorry I took so long. Those girls wouldn't let me be.”
Kurumi smirked as an idea came to her.
“You know Shidou-san,” she said. “With how long you keep me waiting, I'm starting to think something else has grabbed your attention. Or perhaps… someone?”
A member of our audience perhaps?
She glanced at a nearby bush.
“Ah damn, I'm sorry.” Shidou-san looked like a kicked puppy as he spoke. “I didn't mean to make you feel neglected.”
Oh, did I take it too far?
“Don't look so sullen Shidou-san.” She cupped his cheek with her soft hand. “It was a simple joke, nothing more. Sadness doesn't suit a face as cute as yours.”
“...”
Shidou-san suddenly found himself immensely interested in her footwear.
Fufu, cute. Seems he's self conscious about being seen as a neglectful partner.
“So where are we going next?” Kurumi asked.
“That's a surprise.” Shidou straightened up and held out his hand.
Kurumi intertwined her fingers with his, the gesture feeling… safe and natural to her, and let Shidou-san lead the way.
Hold on, why did I care about his feelings? I shouldn't… there shouldn't be a point.

Dog.
“Fua! They're so cute!” Kurumi squealed in delight, her hands pressed against the glass.
Or more specifically, puppies.
Shidou and Kurumi stood in front of a pet store that had a vast assortment of cute animals greeting them on the other side of the glass, puppies being the most notable.
Chicks dig em. This might be one of the only times me and Ratatoskr made the same decision. Lingerie shop was what Bob Ross would call a happy accident. The only reason I even lived after accidentally suggesting it was because she a freak. Thank God we're actually playing it safe now, or whatever this universe's God is.
“Seems you appreciate the surprise.” Shidou noted. “Either that or you're trying very hard to not make me feel bad, in which case impeccable acting.”
“I could never!” Kurumi let out an embarrassed sequel as she pressed her face against the glass, causing the puppies to lick the glass. “Ah hello little babies~.”
The sound of a bell chiming forced their attention to the pet store’s entrance, where an exasperated female employee looked at the two of them like they were members of that one group.
“You know you and your boyfriend can come inside, right?” She asked, before her eyes widened in recognition once she fully took in Shidou. “Oh, it's you.”
“Oh. Hello there.” Shidou replied robotically. “Fancy meeting you here.”
Kurumi looked between the two in confusion.
“Someone you know, Shidou-san?” She asked, curious.
Barely.
“He should, he took something very near and dear to my heart after all.” The employee spoke softly. “My, I'd say I was never the same girl I was after that.”
“Okay, what the hell are you talking about?” Shidou interjected before she could make things worse. “Quit being cryptic, we met once and all it amounted to was me looking like a feminist talking point.”
“My previous job.” The girl replied, rubbing the back of her head in faux sheepishness. “Yeah, my manager wanted me to clean up that mess you and that girl left behind, I refused and well… I have a new job now.”
Is it still too late to say sorry?
“You can send Tohka the bill.” Shidou said dismissively, gently separating Kurumi from the glass and helping her to her feet. “Look, former Walmart employee, can we go inside?”
“Ah of course, though there's no need to ask.” She opened the door and gestured for them to enter. “You always had permission.”
Can't say I missed you Walmart girl.
“Such a cute kitty!” Kurumi exclaimed as she dashed inside, kneeling down to play with an orange tabby kitten.
It looks like a Chinese farmers market here.
Shidou thought to himself as he surveyed the inside of the store, before he reread his thoughts and immediately blanched.
Wait, was that racist? Well I'm Asian too, so that should cancel it out right-
“Meow.”
Shidou was pulled out of his controversial thoughts by a gray kitten with black stripes, who for some reason thought it would be socially acceptable to climb up his leg.
Ah hello small creature…
Shidou sheepishly stood still and let the kitten do its thing, like a little bitch.
“Fua, I think it likes you Shidou-san!” Kurumi exclaimed, the orange kitten by her side meowing in annoyance at being ignored. “Ah sorry, don't think I forgot about you little cutie.”
She resumed petting the kitten.
I can't believe I'm getting cucked by a cat.
He felt a hand on his shoulder.
“If it makes you feel better, anyone in her situation would have chosen the kitten.” The employee said reassuringly.
“It doesn't make me feel better, actually.” Shidou deadpanned.
“Oh well.” The employee said dismissively. “Look on the bright side, I can name at least one individual who'd pick you.”
Shidou sighed, reaching down to pick up the kitten at his feet.
“What's their name?” Shidou asked, a blank look on his face. “And gender identity, preferred pronouns, trigger words, race, and voting history?”
Don't wanna be a bigot.
“Dude, it's a cat.” The employee crossed her arms, exasperated. “I only really understood half of that, but she's a girl. And she doesn't have a name, none of the cats here do. Individuality is not to be tolerated here.”
Shidou placed the kitten on his shoulder, who proceeded to snuggle up to him.
“What, are you afraid they might overthrow you or something?” Shidou quipped.
“Or something…” The employee mumbled.
“What.”
“Nah, I'm just messing with you.” She brushed him off, her face becoming melancholic. “I lost a kitten not too long ago, little scamp ran into that park nearby and I never saw him again. I try not to get too attached to them now.”
Way to bring the mold down…
The kitten on his shoulder seemed to share the same sentiment.
“Please?” Shidou heard Kurumi ask.
Turning his attention back to his date, he found himself graced with the sight of her trying to beckon over a timid looking kitten.
“I promise I won't hurt you, just a little touch…?” Kurumi tentatively reached her out to the kitten, only to have it dash away and hide behind Shidou. “Wah- no fair! Why are you okay with Shidou-san but not me!”
Now I'm doing the cucking. The cuck becomes the cuckee.
“That's unusual.” The employee said, perplexed. “She doesn't even let me get close to her.”
Guess I'm special then, just one of the many mysteries of the world.
Shidou looked towards the heartbroken Kurumi and smirked, crouching down to scratch the timid kitten’s chin.
“She's pretty scary huh?” Shidou asked the kitten, earning an affirming meow in response. “Don't worry little guy-”
“Girl.” The employee corrected him.
“Don't worry little girl, I'll protect you.” Shidou finished, smugly side-eyeing the source of the kitten's distress.
“Shidou-san…” Kurumi grumbled, reluctantly returning to petting the first kitten she'd laid eyes on.
Wait, didn't we enter to play with the dogs?
Shidou turned towards the windows, being met with the sight of the two display puppies pawing at their enclosure with sad expressions.
Sorry little guys… ack-
Shidou looked down to see the timid kitten replaced by a white kitten aggressively climbing up his leg.
“What…?” The employee said in confusion. “That one rarely emotes, I always thought it was more of a statue than a cat.”
She looked up at him as if he'd grown a second head.
“What are you?” She drawled.
“The politically correct term is ah… human.” Shidou replied, wincing as the white kitten climbed up on his shoulder.
Dedicated aren't you?
The white kitten stared blankly back at him, his hazel eyes meeting its blue. The eye contact was finally b
roken once it noticed the other kitten on his shoulder.
“Sssss.”
“Khlllsss!”
The two kittens hissed at each other, both making to pounce on each other before Shidou gripped them both by the back of the neck and placed them on the ground.
“Gray kitten, play nice.” He said sternly before turning to the other kitten. “White kitten, check your privilege.”
He let go of them.
“Muawww!”
“Khlllsss!”
The two kittens immediately dove for each other, claws poised to dig into each other. Luckily they both just bumped into the employee's leg, who'd placed herself between the two violent kitties.
“Time out for both of you.” She said sternly, picking them up by the scruff of their necks.
The employee stormed over to a line of glass cages and locked them away.
They found out.
“At least I still have you, eh?” Shidou spoke to the timid kitten, who'd returned upon realizing the others had involuntarily left.
“Fua…” Kurumi grumbled, approaching Shidou with envy in her eyes. “How come they all come to you? I have to work to get their attention and here you are getting them to fight over you. Are you some kind of cat whisperer, Shidou-san?”
“I rarely had any interactions with cat's prior to this.” Shidou said, attempting to placate his date. “I've never owned one either. Sometimes someone drowns while other's die of dehydration. You really like cats huh?”
“Yes, I love cats.” Kurumi spoke softly. “I've been in love with cute kitties ever since I met Sawa-”
Her expression grew serious upon uttering that word.
Sawa? A friend perhaps?
“Forget it, it's embarrassing.” Kurumi’s tone belied her embarrassment. She spoke with an edge, her tone making it evident that any further prying would put Shidou's mortality at risk. “Oh look, a kitty.”
Shidou turned towards the employee, noting the presence of a red tabby kitten rubbing against her legs.
“Even she gets her own kitty?” Kurumi frowned, unenthusiastically reaching out a hand to pet the kitten. “Ow!”
Only to get scratched.
Heh, watch how the pro does it.
“There ther- oh shit.” Shidou recoiled as the kitten scratched him as well.
“Would you look at that?” The employee smirked. “Seems the kitten whisperer has finally met his match.”
Racism, that cat is racist I tell you. There's no way an animal would just hate me for no reason, animals just don't do that.
Shidou inspected his wound, watching in fascination as the red lines adorning his hand slowly disappeared.
Oh right, I have a healing factor.
“What's his deal?” Shidou asked, hiding his healed hand in his pocket.
“He's very selective about who he lets touch him.” The employee explained, leaning down to scratch the kitten's chin. “So selective the only one he was ever friendly towards was my predecessor. Anyone else…”
She made a scratching motion with her free hand.
“Why is he letting you touch him then?” Kurumi asked, looking at the employee enviously. “You said there's only one person he likes.”
“That's the funny part, y’see.” The employee turned to face them, waving a hand in front of her face. “His vision isn't so good, all he can see are blotches of color. I might not be who he thinks I am but I sure do look it.”
“Ah, I get it.” Shidou's eyes widened in realization. “To them, you look exactly like your predecessor, so it's as if nothing has changed. The soul is different, but they don't know that, because the appearance hasn't changed…”
Shidou looked down at the kitten, its image replaced by that of a red haired girl for just a second before Shidou looked away.
Just like me.
“Shidou-san?” Kurumi seemed to pick up the bad mojo Shidou was giving off.
“What if… they found out?” Shidou asked slowly. “What if they learned you were an imposter? That who they believed was their family was merely tricking them?”
“Shidou, what's wrong?” The familiar voice of Kotori resonated through his head, each word seeming like a needle to his skull. “Your heart rate is elevated, is something off?”
“If they discovered you were a fake, what would you do…?” Shidou finished , his breath shaggy.
“Hmm.” The employee crossed her arms and closed her eyes. “That's a tough one.”
She tapped a finger against her chin, deep in thought. After a few moments she opened her eyes and turned her head towards Shidou.
“Alright, here's how this is gonna go.” She moved forward and gently grasped his shoulders. “Pretend you're the kitten.”
“What?” Shidou asked, confused.
She stepped back, turning around and letting out a deep sigh.
“You'll have to get over the fact that the good times are over.” She turned her head to glance back at him. “Whining is pretty pathetic, even more so when it's about something that'll never change.”
Kurumi looked between the both of them with steadily growing concern.
“Whether you like it or not you'll have to move on, and as cute as seeing you beg would be, it simply wouldn't be practical. And you like being practical don't you?” She turned around and stepped closer to Shidou, reaching out to gently rub his cheek. “That's what I would say if you were a cute kitten, unfortunately you're neither cute nor a kitten so my advice is useless to you.”
Right…
“Shidou-san…” Kurumi grumbled, stepping forward and gently removing the employee's hand from his face. “I think we should move on now.”
“Of course.” The employee smirked and stepped away from both of them. “If you won't be buying anything, company policy states I have to ask you two to leave.”
“Yes, let's.” Shidou interlaced his fingers with Kurumi and stepped outside.
What the hell is her deal? It felt like I was talking to a less hot Kurumi.
“What was that, Shidou-san?” Kurumi inquired.
“Just… something personal.” Shidou shook his head. “It's alright now.”
“Shidou.” Kotori’s voice rang out from his earpiece. “We have a problem.”
Great.
"I promise you I'm okay Kurumi.” Shidou donned a reassuring smile. “Nothing short of the world ending could ruin this day for me, not when I get to spend it with such a beautiful girl.”
“How bold…” Kurumi giggled. “Who are you and what have you done with my Shidou-san?”
“Yours?” Shidou smirked. “The day's not even over and you're already staking a claim?”
“Oh my, it almost sounds as if you have a problem with it?” She raised an eyebrow, her expression shifting to one of faux indignation. “Is Shidou-san the type to lead girls on? You're breaking this maiden's heart…”
“Oh heavens no!” Shidou exclaimed, his expression reflecting hers. “I wouldn't dare break a fair maiden's heart so crudely.”
The couple laughed at each other's antics, drawing smiles from passersby.
“So, Shidou-san…” Kurumi started, wiping a tear away as she recovered. “Where to last?”
“Shidou.” Kotori's voice returned with greater urgency. “This is important.”
You can tell me on the way…
“How about the park?”

“Stone… skipping?” Kurumi asked, confused by Shidou's chosen activity.
“Yup.” Shidou said as he searched the ground for the perfect rock.
“I don't mean to criticize you Shidou-san.” Kurumi started, looking at Shidou awkwardly. “But this isn't what most would consider an appropriate date activity. It's too… normal.”
The point of this entire day was to pull an ‘i can fix her’ on the seemingly homicidal Kurumi, it's why we're here. But it's useless if I don't actually succeed. This entire time I've been catering exclusively to what she wants… and while it's clearly worked to make this day enjoyable, it just feels disingenuous. Isn't the point of a date to get to know each other? I kinda feel like I understand her, but I haven't given her much in terms of understanding me.
“It’s something I used to do with my dad when I was little.” He said absentmindedly, standing up and holding out his hand, revealing a smooth stone. “Besides, just standing around and doing nothing is pretty boring, no?”
He got into a throwing stance, ignoring the sharp intake of breath Kotori took through his earpiece, and sent the rock skidding across the pond before them.
“Hmm, 3 times.” Shidou crossed his arms in disappointment. “In my defense, I haven't done this in a while.”
Shidou turned back to see a surprised and curious Kurumi staring back at him.
“How did you do that?” She asked.
No teasing, no sensuality, no squealing, just simple curiosity.
“It's all about the shape of the stone.” He grabbed two rocks, one smooth and the other jagged, holding them up for her to examine. “Normies think just any rock will do, but you have to use the smooth disk shaped ones.”
He handed her the smooth stone, gently putting a hand on her shoulder and guiding her to the edge of the water.
“You're gonna want to adopt a Frisbee throwing stance… but downwards if you catch my drift.” Shidou explained, gently guiding her arm to the desired position. “Put your thumb on top, index finger on the side, your middle finger underneath, and just… throw it.”
“...”
Kurumi's eyes narrowed in concentration, her arm pulling back to launch the rock… directly into the water, splashing water onto her dress.
“Ah… great.” Kurumi said, slightly irritated.
“It's okay.” Shidou assured, picking up another rock. “Try again. Remember, like a Frisbee.”
She threw again, she failed again.
“Try one more time.” He said, handing her another rock.
She tried once more, she failed once more.
“Again.”
Fail.
“Again.”
Fail.
“Again.”
Fail.
“I can't do it, Shidou-san.” Kurumi grumbled, her brows scrunched up in irritation.
“Wow, a Spirit can't do what a normal human can. It's pretty simple too.” Shidou said dryly.
“Funny guy…” Kurumi hissed, holding out her hand beckoningly. “Give me a rock.”
Shidou obliged.
Kurumi took the offered stone and threw it one last time, it skipped across the water once.
“I did it!” Kurumi yelled excitedly, throwing her hands up in the air before quickly returning to her original demeanor once she remembered Shidou was watching. “Ahem, I did it.”
“That you did.” Shidou replied, giving her a warm smile. “You know when my dad first taught me, I spent the whole day furiously chucking rocks at the water, trying in vain to get just one rock to skip. And here you are, one upping my 7 year old self by doing it in thirty minutes.”
“Shidou-san, you sweet talker~.” Kurumi said sarcastically before she couldn't hold it in and giggled to herself. “There was no need to say anything, I was already feeling inadequate, thank you.”
“Shidou.” Kotori called out. “She's here.”
Ah… I was hoping we'd have more time.
“Ah…” Shidou groaned.
“What's wrong?” Kurumi asked.
“I have to go to the bathroom, actually this time.” Shidou smiled powerlessly.
“Judging by the lack of crudeness in that statement, I think you're telling the truth.” Kurumi giggled. “I suppose it can't be helped, I'll wait for you here.”
“You may have gotten it once, but I think you should keep trying while I'm gone. Practice makes perfect.” He suggested. “See if you can match my score okay.”
“Hmm, very well.” Kurumi smiled. “Just don't break down over being beaten alright?”
“Hah hah.” Shidou dryly laughed before beginning to run off. “I'm really sorry about this!”
Kurumi waved him off, kneeling down to pick up a smooth looking stone.

Kurumi let out a breath as she watched the water fall still.
Two this time, really? What was his secret?
The date so far had been… interesting. She couldn't recall a time in recent memory where she genuinely found herself… enjoying. She had enjoyed herself, truly enjoyed herself for the first time in decades.
I've had fun before? No… satisfaction.
Killing people brought her no joy, no fun. She didn't partake in taking lives for amusement, she did it to fulfill a goal, for the satisfaction of coming closer to the end. And if removing one more vermin from this mortal plane was part of that, well, she wasn't going to complain.
“Two again.” She whispered to herself, kneeling down to pick up another stone to try again.
Honestly, why'd he have to choose something so normal?
She was an inhuman killing machine, not some pedestrian schoolgirl in love. Yet whenever she thought back to Shidou's hands on her as they guided her form. She felt her body warm up.
I can't throw like this!
The stone slipped from her grasp before it could hit the water, landing at her feet.
So pedestrian… me, skipping rocks. What am I doing?
Yet despite her conflicting thoughts, she knelt to pick up the fallen stone.
It's so boring, so normal. What kind of guy would make his date skip rocks?
He should've been boring. He should've meant nothing, he served no other purpose but to die to fuel her ambition after all. Yet when she thought of Shidou-san, she couldn't help wanting to know more about him. She gazed at the smooth unblemished stone in her hand, clutching it tightly.
Beyond skipping rocks, what are his interests? His thoughts. His… flavor.
“Hehe.” She held the stone to her chest as her body warmed up. “My, I need to contain my excitement. My cheeks are so flushed.”
What's wrong with me?! I- I need to cool down…
Kurumi walked the park with light steps, her hand still clutching the stone. She came to a stop upon coming across a vending machine.
Not what I meant by cooling down… but that could work.
“Mew…” An unpleasant sound reached her ears, stopping her in her tracks.
It's coming from there…
The weak sound came from deeper within the forested area of the park, growing louder and louder as she approached, eventually coming to be accompanied by the laughter of young boys.
“This little guy's pretty quick!” She heard a boy's voice call out, accompanied by what sounded like pebbles hitting the ground.
““““There! Take that!”””” She heard multiple boys exclaim in amusement.
She entered a small clearing with four youths carrying model guns, surrounding a small kitty that Kurumi was sure was a baby. The kitten cried out in pain with each pellet the boys shot into its skin.
“My, my. I see you're doing something quite intriguing.” She said with half open eyes.
Kurumi opened her hand, the stone leaving her grasp in
a fine dust, carried away by the wind.
“Whoa!” The boys took a step back, surprised by her sudden arrival.
“Pay me no mind.” She stepped forward with a charming smile. “Please, allow me to join in on your amusement. I'm quite adept with a gun, despite my appearance.”
The boys looked at each other in confusion.
“What should we do?” One asked.
“Guess we'll let her.” Another replied smugly.
“Thank you so much.” She said gratefully. “I would, however, like to make a suggestion. Why don't we modify the rules? Nothing serious…”
She took another step.
“Let's just try… a different target.”
Satisfaction.

“Shidou, we lost sight of Kurumi!” Kotori urgently exclaimed.
Oh it's just one fucking problem after another!
“Commander, we've detected Spirit waves in the area!” Shidou heard a man exclaim through the other end.
“Fucking great…” Shidou whispered to himself. “As if this whole thing couldn't get worse.”
Shidou eyed the girl across from him with a tired gaze.
“How did you even know I'd be here?” Shidou asked, exasperated.
“It's a popular dating spot for couples.” Origami replied, monotonously. “I'd planned on taking you here myself.”
“Shidou…” Shidou heard Tohka’s worried words from behind as she stepped in front of him. “Stay behind me.”
“Don't have to ask me twice.” Shidou said as he took a few steps back. “Y'know Origami, the last… what is it? Hundred times you fought Tohka you didn't exactly win, did you?”
“I'm not here to force you to come with me.” Origami shook her head, adopting a non defensive stance. “I’m here to return something to you.”
What, your virginity? You're not exactly above manipulation to get what you want.
“Yeah, I think I'm fine where I'm at.” Shidou said dismissively, clapping Tohka on the shoulder. “Right behind my trusty shield.”
“I'm not lying Shidou.” Origami replied, dismissing her armor and returning to her default school uniform. “Please… trust me.”
Eh, I don't know…
“Her vitals don't line up with any deception.” Kotori supplied. “No shade to the two of you, but I don't think you could beat her as she is now. Tohka’s not at full strength, Yohshino can't access her sealed power yet, and you aren't a fighter. She might lack in power compared to a Spirit, but she's still a WIZARD, and a highly skilled one at that. I suggest hearing her out, then asking about Lieutenant Takamiya’s whereabouts.”
Wow, I got the shonen battle talk, that's how you know shit is serious.
“Hey Tohka.” Shidou said. “Can you show me how to throw a punch?”
“Uh… sure Shidou.” Tohka agreed before quickly demonstrating her lack of fighting knowledge.
She gripped her thumb when throwing a punch… yeah we're screwed.
“Alright we'll hear you out.” Shidou surrendered. “Just promise not to kidnap me okay?”
“Promise.” Origami replied.
“Wha- Shidou!” Tohka sputtered, looking at him with shock and betrayal. “We can't trust Tobiichi! She tried to-”
“Please, trust me.” Shidou gave her a reassuring smile.
“Ah… okay.” Tohka stepped away, dismissing her astral dress. “But I'll be watching you Tobiichi!”
She pointed an accusatory finger at Origami… who promptly ignored Tohka's warning in favor of approaching Shidou.
“Fuh…” Tohka grumbled.
Origami held up her hand and placed it on Shidou's chest, closing her eyes and doing… something.
Uh…
“What are you doing?! Trying to steal Shidou's heart?!” Tohka exclaimed, waving her arms around frantically. “I won't let you!”
“There.” Origami opened her eyes and retracted her hand. “Just making sure.”
“Make sure of what?” Shidou asked.
“Don't worry.” Origami replied. “Everything is as it should be now.”
“Why wouldn't it be?” Shidou asked, confused. “You know what? Forget it. Where's Mana at?”
“Maintenance.” Origami replied.
“What?”
“She returned to base to ensure her CR unit would be at full capacity.” Origami informed. “Told me to buy time.”
Tohka's eyes widened in understanding.
“Shidou, she tricked us!” Tohka exclaimed, resummoning her astral dress and moving to stand in front of Shidou. “Tobiichi… I should've known.”
“I won't be fighting you.” Origami shook her head, not at all intimidated by Tohka's display. “I came to protect you.”
“What.”
Did I catch that right? Origami came to protect Tohka? Tohka the Spirit, that Tohka?
“You care about Princess, do you not?” Origami asked.
“I do.” Shidou replied.
“Takamiya-san isn't thinking clearly.” Origami continued. “She won't hesitate to kill Princess, should she stand in her way.”
“Shit.” Shidou said. “We should leave then, I'm not risking someone's life for my sake.”
“Shidou?” Tohka asked, concerned.
“I'll buy time for you.” Origami said, biting her bottom lip hard enough to draw blood. “So you can seduce… I'll make sure Princess isn't killed while we stall Takamiya-san.”
“What, Tobiichi?!” Tohka exclaimed.
“Sister in law, I'm trusting you.” Origami's tone dropped tenfold. “Now…”
She roughly grasped Shidou by the shoulders and turned him around.
“Go.” She urged.
“But-”
“Go!”
She roughly pushed him forward as a loud boom reverberated through the sky.
“She's here.”
He didn't need to be told three times.

.
.
.
The first thing he noticed was the smell, it wasn't hard to miss, people don't tend to forget the smell of blood once they'd experienced it once. The concerning thing was how prevalent it seemed to be as Shidou walked through the foliage.
This is a supremely stupid idea. Why? Why did she let me go? Did she think it was because I was just that desperate for Kurumi's ass? She was so against it earlier too… What the hell am I even doing? She's hot, but not suicidal hot.
The smell of blood grew stronger.
Why do I keep moving forward? I'm in the world of an anime, but that doesn't mean I'm anchored to its plot. I don't have to do this. As great as the date was, there's no guarantee she won't immediately kill me the moment she sees me. And judging by the smell, the chances of me living seem slim.
He furiously scratched his head, his hair becoming unkempt.
Seriously what the fuck am I doing?
His foot hit something.
Oh, it's…
A human foot, its owner nowhere to be seen, or everywhere depending on who you ask.
I don't… I'm too tired to even freak out. Let's just get this over with.
Shidou reached up to his ear and ripped off his earpiece, throwing it onto the floor and stomping on it.
There's no reason for them to see this.
Shidou leaned against a tree and emptied the contents of his stomach onto the floor.
“Oh my, Shidou-san you're already here?”
Shidou looked towards the source of the voice, coming upon the sight of Kurumi and a shirtless boy with a target on his chest in the middle of a clearing surrounded by blood and gore. Kurumi was wearing a black and white Gothic Lolita outfit, her hair styled into two tails, and her eye patch removed, revealing a single golden pupil.
Hold on a second.
Baring the dismembered foot, the clearing seemed to just be stained with blood. Granted, it was a lot of blood, but that seemed to be it for the most part.
Oh right… anime. Man I was freaking out for nothing.
Shidou sighed, straightening up as he wiped the spit from his mouth.
This is so stupid. I'm stupid.
“H-Help me! She's crazy!” The boy pleaded to Shidou, his pants gaining a distinct wet stain across his groin.
“You were ready to kill another creature, yet you're scared of being killed yourself.” Kurumi asked, waving her pistol for him to see. “Don't you think that's strange?”
She raised her pistol.
“When you point a gun at a living thing…”
She pulled the trigger.
“This is the meaning of that act.”
The body dropped.
There wasn't anything I could do to stop it, no use… no use fretting over what I can't change.
“So why'd you kill him?” Shidou asked upon noticing her turn to look at him. “Or any of these people for that matter?”
“They aimed to kill a defenseless creature, I simply repaid the favor.” Kurumi replied. “I must say, I'm confused, Shidou-san. A normal person would be far more disturbed seeing a scene like this.”
“Eh, once I took stock of the whole thing I realized it wasn't so bad.” Shidou shrugged. “Besides, freaking out wouldn't have done any good.”
Kurumi's eyes widened in realization.
“Our audience isn't here, is it?” Kurumi asked, causing Shidou's eyes to widen. “I apologize, Shidou-san, but I wasn't the only one keeping secrets. I'm quite aware of Tobiichi-san sharing our secrets.”
“You… you knew?” Shidou asked breathlessly. “But you still showed up today.”
H-How…?
“And I don't regret it.” White hands sprung up from the ground and wrapped themselves around Shidou's legs, keeping from running. “I enjoyed our date very much, it's a shame it'll have to end so soon.”
Ah, I've been had.
....

.
.
Shidou's seeming indifference to her horrific actions had stunned her at first, but she refused to show it on her face.
‘Not that bad’ he says, but the subtle widening of your eyes belies you Shidou-san. It bothered you, you're just very good at hiding it. You might be a good actor, but you're not as good as me.
“Wait, why do you want to kill me anyways?” Shidou asked, curious. “As far as I know we've never even met.”
Hmm. Well I suppose I could grant a dying man his last request.
“It's nothing personal Shidou.” She reached out to rub his cheek. “You simply have something I want.”
“And that is?” He inquired.
“The reiryoku you've absorbed from- I see what you're doing. Naughty naughty, Shidou-san.” She booped his nose. “Trying to stall for time so you can outnumber and capture me?”
“No, I was actually being curious.” Shidou replied without skipping a beat.
Her smile slipped for a moment, but she quickly recovered.
“Regardless.” She spoke, holding the muzzle of her pistol under Shidou-san’s chin. “Your fate stays the same.”
“This isn't you.”
…
“What?”
“I think Drake said something like that?” Shidou-san said, unsure. “Eh, schematics. Regardless, the meaning stays the same.”
Ah… right, his altruism.
“Tell me something before I eat you.”
“Kinky.” Shidou interrupted.
“Shush. Now tell me, why do you do it? Why do you capture Spirits?” She asked.
Shidou's face became obscured, his demeanor becoming melancholic.
“Because I have to.” He replied. “I don't have much of a choice.”
Hmm? Well they do say a man is most honest when facing his death.
“I don't regret it though.” He continued, unprompted. “The problem lies entirely with me, it's not them. Objectively speaking, I've saved them from a worse life.”
There it is, the nonsense Herald mentioned.
“My hero.” Kurumi said sarcastically. “You neglected all the possible dangers in order to pursue a stupid dream.”
“Oh right.” Shidou-san said, more to himself than her. “I came here to save you, of course…”
"Hahaha," Kurumi burst out laughing. "That's funny Shidou-san. Truly hilarious, and hopelessly naive. We Spirits are a danger to the world. We never should have been born!”
“Which is why it'd be better to turn you back into a human.” He replied.
What?
“I don't know who did this to you.” Shidou-san shook his head. “Nor does it really matter. What does is the fact that if you kill me, you kill your only ticket to a normal life.”
Normal… life? How do you know that?
“Kurumi, think about it. I can make it so you're not hunted anymore. You'll be undetectable by the scanners, and you'll be able to live a normal life.” Shidou said.
Herald's words reverberated through her head.
‘then perhaps this operation will be a success after all.’
Aah…!
Kurumi stepped back, distancing herself from Shidou-san.
Is this what she meant? Was this all some elaborate ploy? What, get me to settle down and play house with this altruistic idiot? The bitch!
“I don't think you're a truly evil person if I'm gonna be honest.” He spoke clearly and without doubt.
“Are you stupid?” Kurumi exclaimed. “What bullshit are you spouting now?!”
Shidou-san seemed surprised by her language, but continued nonetheless.
“Look, I'm not fucking Batman.” Shidou-san said, looking at her with a face she couldn't discern. “I'm not gonna criticize you for killing people. From what I've seen you've only killed people who can be considered evil. Like these guys. I'd even go as far as assuming those guys you killed in that alley were probably rapists or something.”
How did-
“Liar. Look around, Shidou-san.” Kurumi gestured to the blood soaked terrain. “There's no redemption for this, this isn't the work of an angel. This is the work of a devil, a nightmare. And if you believe otherwise you're a damn fool.”
“Facts don't care about your feelings.” Shidou-san stated.
“What-”
“Let's say hypothetically, that the one thing in the world you'd hate the most is being forgiven,” Shidou-san inhaled before continuing. “Would it not be presumptuous to assume that the appropriate punishment for one such as yourself is forgiveness?”
“What are you…?”
“There is no greater punishment than forgiveness for a self loather.” Shidou-san looked at her with… warmth, his expression a stark contrast with the scenery surrounding them.
No! No!
“Think you got me all figured out huh?!” Kurumi tossed him aside, keeping her distance as she spoke with manic anger. “Well you're wrong!”
Shidou groaned, but slowly pushed himself to his feet. Kurumi flinched as he took a step towards her.
“No greater punishment…”
“SHUT UP!” Kurumi screamed.
“NIGHTMARE!”
A scream of fury, followed by a dust cloud as a new figure entered the fray.
“Mana!” She heard Shidou exclaim. “Damnit! I was so close…”
T–Time to go…
Kurumi staggered as she walked backwards, slowly fading into thin air as it rippled around her. Shidou-san widened his eyes and reached out for her.
"Kurumi, wait!" Shidou-san shouted as he lunged for her.
Dumbass…
