An AU where the One Piece really was the friends we made along the way

Summary:

Finally, the Strawhat Pirates had done it. They had sailed across the world, amassing fortunes (and then spending it all on food for Luffy) and forming allies everywhere they went.

All that was left, was to open the grand treasure chest left behind by Gol D Roger, and everyone's dream would be completed, including Nami's second but still important dream of being the richest person alive.

..Right?

Notes:

This idea came to me in a dream. In no way am I bashing Nami's character, I just think she would rightfully be outraged that the money she was promised actually was her friends. I do think Nami loves her friends but also she would try kill Luffy if this happened.

Also I know that Nami's dream is to draw a map of the world but honestly she would so try to become the richest person alive while she was at it. Girlboss

Work Text:

Finally, the Strawhat Pirates had done it. They had sailed across the world, amassing fortunes (and then spending it all on food for Luffy) and forming allies everywhere they went. It had been a long and hard journey, and everyone couldn't wait to find the One Piece in order to settle down again. Sanji was looking to sail Zeff and the rest of the crew at Baratie to the All Blue, Usopp was planning on settling down with Kaya back in Syrup Village, Franky and Robin would probably build a house that tried to kill intruders somewhere nice, Chopper would become a travelling doctor, Zoro would get lost, Luffy would probably follow him and make him go on crazy adventures, Brook would become a travelling musician and Jimbei would finally return to Fishman Island, where he would stay. And Nami? She would head to Alabasta, and with the gold collected from Roger's stash, she would fund her and Vivi's wedding. The wedding HAD to be perfect, and they would not settle for the cheaper version of what they really wanted. As such, the Strawhat's debts to Nami rapidly increased, and she found herself becoming more money-hungry than ever. But just through this cave would be Roger's treasure, and Nami would have all the gold she needed (and more!).

All that was left, was to open the grand treasure chest left behind by Gol D Roger, and everyone's dream would be completed. Everyone would get to live happily ever after, and return back to their home, and be celebrated as heroes. All that was left was this final, final obstacle.

As Luffy slowly raised the lid of the chest, Nami felt her heart beat rapidly. This was it! All of her hard work would pay off, and she would never have to work another day in her life, she could just live comfortably with her wife (her wife! Nami wished she could be married sooner if only to call Vivi that to everyone she met). The massive castle was just a plus. As the lid finally fell back with a 'clunk' sound, the Strawhats peered in to see what their final adventure had led them to.

.........
.....

A piece of paper. A massive treasure chest that was easily the size of The Going Merry contained one sheet of paper. Nami felt her blood pressure rise. "Maybe there's a map on the paper? Otherwise it would have been quite enraging for the One Piece to be a mere sheet of paper. Who knows? It might drive us to turn on each other and start killing." chuckled Robin. Okay, a map on the paper. Nami can read maps, I mean she fucking drew a map of the world! Pushing the second half of the sentence to the back of her head, Nami instead focused on where the map could lead to. Maybe there was one final island that was made out of gold! The sand would be coins and the rocks would be solid gold. Picturing it in her mind, Nami felt a sense of calmness wash over her. Yeah, there had to be an island-

"It just says the One Piece is the friends we made along the way" Luffy helpfully stated, breaking Nami out of her dream and angering her. Now, Nami loved her friends. She would do anything for them, and she considered them a second family, the people who she would want to walk her down the aisle at her wedding and stand beside her at her happiest moment. However. Nami had uprooted her entire life with the promise of treasure at the end of this journey. This ten year journey. After she had finally reconciled with the town, safe from Arlong's rule, she wasn't even able to rebuild connections with them, she wasn't able to spend more time with her sister. In the silence that followed Luffy's statement, the Strawhats swore they heard Nami's sanity snap. For several years to come, the legend of the witch on the screaming island was passed amongst people, with several islands leaving gold as offerings to placate the horrid witch.

'Well,' Nami thought to herself, 'I have been called worse things before, and at least this way the island of gold does exist'

Notes:

she did not kill the strawhats- just scared them so much that surrounding islands heard their screams. justice for nami if the one piece is actually friendship- she will actually go insane i fear
